Title: New player thoughts...
Post by: jbs87 on April 01, 2008, 11:55:37 pm
So far I've played 10 matches, mostly human. the majority of games I've played as human have gone one of two ways (turrets always built): humans s1 go out of base try to get kills, inevitably get stomped and then spawn in base and camp, aliens pick off straggles who leave turret range and eventually tech up to s3, humans if lucky tech up to s3 and go to jetpacks. Tyrants stomp base defenses, humans lose. I find generally that most of the weapons suck, only 3 weapons seem to be hit scan:rifle, shotgun and chain gun. The rifle is useless against a decent dretch since he's too small and moves unpredictably. the shotgun works as it should, good at killing dretches but against most other aliens is useless since they can with their quick movement and the shotties short range get in your face and destroy you. The chain gun seems to be unbelievably inaccurate and there's way too much kickback. I read a lot that humans need to use more teamwork and that more skilled players use aliens. Why would anyone want to play as humans? Meh rant off

If this is an attempt at an April Fool's Day joke: lolgudone

If not: You suck, learn to play better.

well after MY first ten games, i tought tremulous is definitely awful by the look, perfectly uncontrollable at alien side and generally disguisting. then i got serious lag issues on CoD servers and i didn'T have any other choice but to be addicted to tremulous ^^

You want to play as Humans because you want to preserve your race, of course. The Aliens are nothing more than a team specificaly created for newbies. Why else do you think the most basic Alien damages on touch? I suggest you just keep training your Human skills, we are always in need of people to catch the barbs help defend our heritage against the Alien scourge.

On a side note: You fail.

It gets better as you go.

The mass driver is also hitscan and even zooms in!

The shotgun is actually surprisingly effective against larger bugs if you use it right.

Most of the weapons have a valid purpose.

Try crouching while firing the chaingun.  Try using a chaingun AND a battlesuit.

Play as an alien for the next ten games.

Oh PLEASE, give the guy a break. He is obviously new at trem. I thought it was sucky too. I have nothing but one thing to say: Watch good players, and if you don't have a hitscan weapon, think ahead of your prey. Lasgun is also hitscan if you NEED one of those, definately one of the best weapons in the game.

AFAIK:
Hitscan:
Las Gun
Mass Driver

Non-Hitscan:
Rifle
Pain Saw
Shotgun
Chaingun
Flamer
Pulse Rifle
Lucifer Cannon

Now @jbs87:
I suggest you play more, and practice with all the weapons the pulse rifle is a very good s2 weapon.

Wait a minute, how do you know the abbreviations s1, s2, s3? APRIL FEVER!!!!!

I have looked at rifle bullets and I don't think they are -- or maybe it was lag  ???

The time it takes for a shot to connect is ALWAYS related to your ping. Lagged, every hitscan weapon will always appear to take a little time to actually hit if you have anything above around 80 ping. As for unlagged, this is still unchanged, as there is nothing out there as far as I know that can change when your shot appears to connect except for differing pings and time nudge stuff. (Correct me if I'm wrong on cl_timenudge, although I have seen shots hit instantly despite a high ping with the proper timenudge adjustments.)

And yes, the list Kev posted is correct.

Why do you say that? It looks pretty balanced to me, taking into account that humans and aliens have completely different capabilities. Some issues might be solved, since S1 humans are still too weak, but a well build base and a good (well coordinated) team solves that.

For example, the last human base I went perished due to faulty construction. It was on ACTS and the base was extremely cluttered. Since humans only can jump trice at a time, imagine the difficulties for getting out of the base.

Well, the lucis are a serious problem, now that I remind...

First of all, I'm eating some motherfucking delicious pancakes.

Ok, in my opinion, rifle is also effective against marauder. People who can track well can easily bring a mara down to under 50 hp in the first clip. On a side note, 2 or 3 rifles can be really kickass against goons, but I'm assuming you're talking for when you're alone and you come upon something.

Anyhow, to add to this, shotgun can be effective against lisks and dretches. Also, mass driver is good for lisks too, often far better than shotgun because the lisk has a small enough hitbox to take only a few of the shotgun pellets from a shot at even short-medium range, and the hp to take said shots. On another note, the chaingun is very effective at keeping dretches from doing major damage to you or others, but you'd better be ready to get back to base for ammo fast if you're killing lots of dretches going somewhere. Pulse and lasgun look fine, although I'd say lasgun can be decent against bases but that's just me. Flamethrower, well, kinda comes down to how dumb the aliens are sometimes, but there ARE skilled flamethrowers out there nonetheless. Luci cannon is fine, grenade is fine...

A lot of this does come down to variables like the general willing of each team to work together, as well as the individual skill of the players. There's a few basis out there who can take out lucis and non-chain/flamer suits very easily given the opportunity, and there are people who use regular goons to take out sometimes 2-3 chainsuits in one go. But I think that list is pretty good still in terms of what is best used against which enemies.

It´s realy hard to hit a dretch at first but you will get used to it... somehow...
@thread creator: Perhaps you are the almighty legendary builder the humans have been waiting for? o_o

Subquestion: Does "headshot" on tyrant gets you a bonus on dmg you do?
It felt like there was a bonus when i killed a tyrant all alone with bs+chaingun
( I was running around a box and it was following me lolololol )

Shotgun is too overpowered...
I have killed 3  :human: (s1, most without armor) with  :dragoon: ( i can´t pounce btw )...
so far it has been great, ´cause I have felt like a advNoob and then I heard the 'shakboom' and I was dead ( Me was around 90 hp )
( I´m playing on a server with limited building points and I dont know the name of it, because it´s not shown )

Side note: I always forget how English grammar is used Oo

So i've tried aliens, went pretty well got a few decent kills. By mistake I blocked a guy when I was a tyrant in side hallways in ATCS, and he decided to dedicate every second of his ingame life to block me. Still was fun until i realized I was one an unlimited BP server. Must have been close to 20 turrets. I guess what I don't like is that as humans, on most servers i've played, the general strategy seems to hide behind turrets till you can kill to s3. Maybe if somehow the effectiveness of turrets were taken away and added to human weapons instead, it might reduce all the camping. How one could do so, I have no idea. It just seems like a boring way to play just camping. I'm basing this on public servers, haven't seen any high lvl play. Correct me if I'm wrong

But, you could explain hitscan weapons as having reaaaaaaaly fast projectiles, in theory.

adding to that thought of Lava's: their shots' travel time is not relevant to range but to your ping. The laggier you are the longer it takes to hit where you aimed at (or around it with gunpowder weapons)  ;) ;D

Just as you could theoretically explain how computers work as "Magic"

Lasgun
Weight -- 20 kg
Length -- 300 cm
Muzzle velovity -- 299,792,458 metres per second

omwtf :-O

i wish I'd have a 3 metres long lasgun yaesyeao :-D

or is it really that long??? i know human weapons are technically larger than they feel like because of the perspective but... one and a half times longer than a battlesuiter (assuming it's 2 metres)...?
