I have been reading through the svn repository getting a feel for how things work, but I feel like I am missing something fundamental (read: mucking around in q3 internals to produce a useful result). Is there any literature out there that can help get my toes a little damp so I am not so overwhelmed trying to parse through the codebase? I went out to amazon.com and found 'Focus On Mod Programming in Quake III Arena', which looks promising, but what else is recommended reading for someone wanting to participate? Also, is there an RT (request tracker) setup somewhere with bugs or even a janitorial TODO list somewhere so maybe I work on sending in patches? All in all, I really enjoy playing tremulous and I want to give back a little

I'm not convinced the title you chose for this thread is entirely appropriate...

In the open source community "hacking" has nothing to do with "cracking" or "cheating"... it's kind of a synonym for "messing around with the the sources"... ;)

The title IS appropriate. See dictionary entry for "hacker" (http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/H/hacker.html). Journalists got it wrong.

Since Tremulous is based on ioq3 (http://icculus.org/quake3/), any improvements made to it would help trem too. There are a few bugs (https://bugzilla.icculus.org/buglist.cgi?query_format=specific&order=relevance+desc&bug_status=__open__&product=Quake+3&content=) open in its bugzilla.
A post on the ioq3 mailing list suggested http://www.quakesrc.org/forums/ as a good place for source related questions.

Thats fairly irrelevent, my point is hacking is still synonymous with cheating, whether it actually means something else or not. Surely using the word modify or something similar would have been more effective?

As I said, dictionary entry for "hacker" (http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/H/hacker.html) says otherwise. The word synonymous with cheating is "cracking" (http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/C/cracking.html).

So he wants to mod... Hacking is a bad word for an engine that's free :D Modding is appropriate...

It's this kind of attitude that makes legitimate use of the word hacking tricky, please, grow up, or i'll h4x0r you all.
edit: Gah, didn't realise i was participating in the resurrection of a long dead thread, sorry.
