To the what do the weapons mean thing...

Lucifer: He is the fallen angel, the devil

Tyrant: you really should know what this means

Chain gun: umm... Chain gun?

Mara: see Rant

Basi: Legendary reptile, king of the serpents

Dragoon: The traditional name for a horseback soldier; the creatures looks were probably stolen from starcrafts goons

MD:Drives a massive punch?

Rifle: See Mara

Shotgun: See Rifle

I think that explains the weapons origins pretty well (except a few gaps) as for the name... I think they just liked the name they made up.

marauder -- (stolen from wikipedia) A marauder is a member of one of the sides of a war raiding for pillage, or roving around carrying out violent attacks. While "marauder" is most often used in the context of war, there is no clear-cut division between it and "robber", and in many contexts the two can be regarded as synonymous.

Shotgun and rifle are common names. I think dretch may be german?

Mass driver is supposed to be "a weapon or machine that drives (i.e. shoots) mass (i.e. bullets)". But i guess it was named inaccurately. It should've been named "Particle Accelerator". Or something similar, due to it's energy usage.

Mass driver?
Drives mass. How do you know the green sparks are not caused by the launching/collision of a projectile?
'Energy usage', bah.

"Mass Driver" is a fairly accurate name, at least in terms of description of function.

It has parallel rails, suggesting that it is a railgun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railgun) of sorts.

A. [A Mass Driver]

If you cant figure it out, first highlight the above, then hit yourself in the head.

i believe the tesla generator came from the measurement of magnetic fields, aka teslas

Projectiles have mass, yes. But then do they call the future CERN collider a "mass driver"?

http://dvice.com/archives/2008/02/the_navy_shows.php (http://dvice.com/archives/2008/02/the_navy_shows.php) That is a railgun.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_driver (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_driver) This is a massdriver.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Particle_accelerator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Particle_accelerator) THIS is a particle accelerator.

The massdriver doesn't shoot a 'projectile', but a particle of something. Railguns shoot 1kg bullets into tanks. Massdrivers shoot cargo into orbit. Particle accelerators shoot particles around.

Which one seems most like the mass driver from tremulous?

Telenodes teleport new troops in. Teleport nodes?
Defense computer is supposedly giving a better a.i to the turrets, as well as controlling the tesla generators.

As for tesla generators, check out Nikola Tesla (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola_Tesla).

That tesla gen needs to be the new reactor! <3

As for the lucifer cannon, i guess it could be because its so powerful everyone in A team thinks "Oh noes!" when the devilish hum gets into their ears.

As for the alien names, they all (almost) seem to have some real life counterpart that is oddly similar to them.

The Granger; A farmer. Considering the alien base is alive, Granger is a suitable name for our builder and maid.
The Dretch is.. well.. yeah..
The Basilisk is a fabled reptile residing in the arabian deserts who is said to be so deadly anything that smelled it's breath would pass away.
The Marauder is a marauder; It is Tremulous' raiding class.
The Dragoon; The dragoon is a heavily armed cavalry-man in early European armies. They were fast, agile, and very deadly.
The Tyrant; Tyrants are oppresive leaders who lead through scaring their people into following them. Personally, when I'm wall-jumping around with my raider and I see a 'rant coming at me, I get the fuck out of the way.
Overmind; Can be extrapolated as being a supreme ruler, perhaps the center of a hivemind like society, much like the Borg queen.
Acid Tube; A tube that is full of, or conists of acid.
Egg; An egg.
Trapper; It traps..
Hive; A structure used by bees, wasps, or other related insects for a home.
Barricade; A barricade; A barrier.
Hovel; A small area used for living.
Booster; In medical terms, a booster is a secondary shot of vaccination after the primary to increase effectiveness. You can stand on a booster to renew your poison even if it's not done yet (in some mods). A booster is also a supporter.. In tremulous it certainly supports the aliens; It heals them and makes them stronger.

Now, onto human weapons and technology...

Helmet; Come on, guess.
Light Armor; Armor that is light-weight, and most likely flexible.
Med-kit; A medical kit.
Battle Suit; A suit or exoskeleton designed to withstand the harshness of battle.
Medipad; A pad or base designed for medical purposes.
Defence Computer; A computer designed to be the motherboard for an area's defences.
Armoury; A "collection of resources."
Reactor; A device in which a reaction takes place. I'm sure there's particles bouncing around inside that big purple hunk o' metal to power your base.
MG Turret; A machine-gun turret. Turret implies that it's stationary and mounted. Machine-gun implies that it fires high speed projectiles.
Tesla Generator; A tesla coil; "a step-up transformer with an air core; used to produce high voltages at high frequencies."
Construction kit; A kit used for construction.
Rifle; A rifle.
Shotgun; A shotgun.
Lasgun; Well, shit. I don't know.
Mass Driver; A device that drives mass; shoots a projectile.
Pulse Rifle; A pulse is a rythmic expansion and contraction, for example, that of your heart. I'm stuck on this one.
Chaingun; A gun that is chainfed, not clipfed. Allows for huge amounts of ammo to be fired at once.
Flamethrower; A device that propels fire.
Lucifer Cannon; Lucifer is latin for "light bearer". Bet you didn't know that.
Grenade; It's a freaking grenade.

From http://dictionary.reference.com/ :

Dretch\, v. t. & i. See Drecche. [Obs.]

Drec"che\, v. t. [AS. dreccan, dreccean.]

1. To vex; to torment; to trouble. [Obs.]

As man that in his dream is drecched sore. --Chaucer.

las gun just means laser gun, you're thinking to hard.  ;)

I think pulse rifle refers to the pulses of energy that are your laser beams traveling at slower speeds in order to penetrate harder.

For now, you may also refer to this (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=8015.msg123118#msg123118). It is correct as far as I can tell, but is missing some things. I hope this post helped you, blood 2.0 (and any lurkers)!

Perhaps at S4 humans get a rotating electrode to place on top of their teslas:

isn't that an image of a car surrounded by plasma? the car is magnetized and the electrode is creating plasma, so he has to turn off the electrode to get out of the car, not a very good s4 idea
Title: Re: why is tremulous called tremulous and what do the weapons mean
Post by: Taiyo.uk on May 07, 2008, 12:24:34 am
No, the tesla coil on the car has a single rotating electrode. There's actually only a few sparks at a time, but the long exposure gives the illusion that the car has a plasma shield.

Revan, whats your take on the mass driver?

Though there is a distinction the mass driver is essentially a coilgun: magnets in a line forming a barrel (or outside the barrel)
So the md name is fairly accurate but there is a chance that it is actually a railgun, which is two conductive rails separated with the projectile placed between them, it is then accelerated by the Lorentz force at incredible speeds

This I would like to see in trem: stilletto beam (http://www.technovelgy.com/ct/content.asp?Bnum=1606)
EPIC!

Prolong the length of that thing being turned on and functional and plasma shields would become a reality! Now all we need is starships with fat beamcannons, bombed out planets, infested abandoned starbases, and an intergalactic war between humanity and some bloodthirsty alien space-faring race from some random backwater planet.

Notice how the far rear window frame is brightly lit. The light source is behind the car.
