Title: Obnoxious Map Files
Post by: Sisial on April 30, 2008, 11:26:28 pm
Hey everybody!

So I just reinstalled Tremulous on my Mac and everything was just going all dandy and fine until I started downloading Maps. I got half way through everything on the Mercenaries guild site the first day and all was well. The next day I went from the "map-t"'s to the end. When I had all the files ready I went to log onto Trem and...my screen flashed a lot and I had to restart my computer.

So apparently there is some problem with my map files. When I put them in the base folder (just the last few, not the first few) I can't run Trem. When I take them out I can. Any advice? Seen this before?

Other symptoms include starting ok and then quitting abruptly right away or starting ok and quitting abruptly right after I click "play". These occur when I change the files in my base folder (try putting only some maps in).

Remove all the custom maps you downloaded, and download on-demand when you join a server.

I know, it sucks, but the servers you join won't be hosting maps that include borked shaders that ultimately cause what you describe.

I believe there's also a problem when you have too many maps in the folder; the client has trouble indexing them all.  At least I'm fairly sure that happens on servers, so it might also happen on the client.

But yeah; just autodownload maps as needed, and you won't have to worry about having a huge collection of crappy ones you'll never see anyway :>

I just reran my sync script, now have 500mb more maps than I did before, and it all still works fine.
