Title: .map files, where are they?
Post by: Vector_Matt on June 07, 2006, 04:53:26 pm
Does anyone know where the .map files for the "official" maps are? They are not included in the source and someone (perhaps me) nedds to add location info to them and perhaps make some of the outdoor areas accesible. And for completeness sake the source code should at least come with the .map's.

Thank you.

Tremor comes with its .map file.

For the other maps: Artwork, including maps, for tremulous is licenced under the creative commons license that does not grant you access to the root/source files.
You may ask the authors for the files, but they do not have to hand them over.
Location infos will be added to the standard maps in the next tremulous release as far as I have heard.

You'd have to contact the authors individually to get the source for the maps. Though generally thinking while the maps do fall under the open gaming license for distribution I do not think that the original .maps fall under such a category but can't be 100% sure.

Location entities will be added to as many maps as possible for next release.

This will include: atcs, arachnid2, niveus, nexus6, tremor, transit and uncreation. karith may not be possible.

Well horay for tremmor, and the GPL!

Why might it not be posible to put location stuff in karith?

Horay for people that give away their creative work for free, apart from the way it is licensed.
Playing a game that is free and being sarcastic on some of the developers who know what they want to happen to their creations is not quite fair, is it?

Just for the record, arachnid2 comes with a .map as well.  8)

Although it should also be noted that arachnid2 is a horrible mess of brushes that shouldn't be looked at.  <.<

Ok, so two of eight include the .map files, yay.

The main point was that I think the maps' source should be included because there are some pretty cool things in some of them that beginers might want to look at to figure out how stuff is done. Also It would be nice if maps that have a visible outdoor areas let players acces those areas (after all, why make a GREAT outdoor scene that few players will ever notice?).

P.S. I didn't mean to offend anyone who made maps and hasn't made the .map public, I was simply wondering why they didn't come with the Tremulous source, which would seem logical (Little did I know that it was due to different licenes for Trem and maps [Which I still find kinda odd]).

Thanks you for the information, and thank you hard working mappers for making the maps.

That is a good idea, but I imagine it can be overwhelming for a new mapper to see what the experienced ones do to get the job done all in one map. It might be easier to make some sample maps that explain triggers, teamed doors, ladders, gravity, decals, basebuilding, lighting, patches, clipper, gameplay concerns, texturing, shader editing, particle system (notice the amount i'm getting just out of my head which are in a single map) and such.

Outdoor areas not being accesible can be for a number of reasons.
- Strong FPS drop
- Gameplay can be hard for aliens since they usually are wide open.
- They look great because they aren't limited by gameplay.

You also hide detail with shadows. You sould release your map with fullbright lightmaps? no, because will look crap. Its a artistic tradeoff, i think.

The maps Trem include are amazing, well designed and balanced. Congrats!
