*Sponsored by AMD and Tremcentral.com

Introducing! The first Annual Tremulous Mapping Contest! Who is the best of the best?!

Tremcentral.com, with cooperation of some of the developers, is proud to announce that it will be sponsoring a mapping contest. If you have any experience in mapping, and want to see how you compare, or just want to submit one for giggles, we want YOU to submit your map!

Rules:
1.   Must be playable. No glitchy, epilepsy causing, crappy maps!
2.   Must support 16+ players.
3.   Must be a NEW, never released map.
4.   Cannot be ported.
5.   Must be your or your teams work, no one else’s.
6.   Group projects are okay! But, you must credit EVERYONE that helped.
7.   You must signup by the signup date or risk losing points!
8.   Must follow the theme! (Currently, no theme)
9.   Cannot release the maps before the winner has been announced.

14.   Must include .map
15.   Must include, somewhere in the map, “Brought to you by Tremcentral.com”, and must also include the maker of the map (your nickname or groupname).

Judging:
The judges will be anonymous. The judges will play the maps on a private passworded server. The judges are already picked, so do not ask to be a judge.

Here is a list of what you will be judged on and how deeply we look into it:

Total available points – 200.

10.    Overall         40   - Overall, is the map good?

Reward:
Oh, so you WANT something for doing all this? Well okay. Tremcentral will be pleased to offer you the cash prize of $25 for your work! Payment will be made via Paypal. But that’s not all! You will also gain:
-   Your name on the Tremcentral.com website, congratulating you. (Real and/or Nickname).
-   Rotation spot on the SST Server for 1 week minimum.
-   Icon/banner (designed by:
-   Bragging rights

Signup:

So, how do I signup?! Simple! Email admin@tremcentral.com with your nickname and any forms of contact (AIM/MSN/IRC/YAHOO/ICQ/Alternate Emails). You MUST email this address in order to enter – no shortcuts! (IE, PMing me >.>). If you are working in a group, email the group name plus the nicknames of all the players that helped make the map. Must signup before June 19th.

Due Dates:
You are required to send us portions of your map as you go along. This is to prevent cheating. You must email us your unfinished map on each of the due dates. Remember, your map is never truly done! Always make adjustments down to the very end. If you are a procrastinator, like me, then play it smart – send in at least the blank .map!

Must be sent by 11:59PM Central
1.   June 20
2.   June 30
3.   July 5
4.   July 10
5.   July 15
6.   July 20th – Final due date, FINISHED map.
Submit your maps to admin@tremcentral.com. Remember to send the .map and .pk3!

Releasing:
Tremcentral will release all of the maps at the end of the contest, after the contest winner has been announced. Do NOT release the map before the winner has been announced or you risk being disqualified. The winner will be announced by July 30th.

There is no theme. Submit any theme (or no theme at all...) which you so choose.

To clarify: You may use any textures, sounds, or graphics which do not belong to you to put the map together however they must conform to the Tremulous Media License.

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/ (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/)

Remember, the more original, the better you will score.

Balance and playability will be judged using stock bps on a 20 slot server with 16 players.

It will be very hard to make a playable map without play testing....
Same goes for bug hunting.
Also your scores seem to be way more weighted to looks (and sounds) awesome than plays well.

But looks nice.  Well done.

I think this needs to be moved to the appropriate section and stickied, since I see no difference between this mapping compo and the one ran by Survivor.

Post by: Confess on June 18, 2008, 06:49:26 am
Just a quick note: Remember, a map is never truly done, you will probably always think of something new to add to it, and because of that - the map you release does not necessarily have to be your final release - It just has to be the playable beta release (But remember, it must follow the rules! IE, Few glitches/etc).

15.   Must include, somewhere in the map, “Brought to you by Tremcentral.com”, and must also include the maker of the map (your nickname or groupname).
erm, does that actually mean that the maps in competition will belong to tremcentral?
Title: Re: Tremcentral Mapping Contest
Post by: Confess on June 18, 2008, 10:02:01 pm
No, although by submitting the maps to Tremcentral you agree to having them published - the link to the website is just supposed to be an "easter bunny", a form of advertisement for Tremcentral.
Title: Re: Tremcentral Mapping Contest
Post by: Supertanker on June 18, 2008, 11:43:13 pm
Just to clarify, there is *no* size limit correct, besides those imposed by common sense (EG, if I tried to send you a 100 mb Pk3, assuming I could ever upload it, it wouldn't be a very good idea)?

I tend to design maps that look great but have huge .bsps, and can't seem to get my textures small enough.
Title: Re: Tremcentral Mapping Contest
Post by: Confess on June 19, 2008, 12:04:57 am
The Tremcentral maximum upload limits are 32mb - so I'd base it around that, but yes - pretty much common sense, dont make it too large. While there is not necessarily a limit - too large, you probably won't win unless its a REALLY REALLY good map.

hmmm that could be the board, but it might be a different one, assuming you searched for the amd 580x chipset... there are a few boards out there with that chipset:

Chipset:                    Brand:      Model number:
AMD 580X CrossFire™   ASUS   M2R32-MVP
AMD 580X CrossFire™   MSI   K9A Platinum
AMD 580X CrossFire™   ECS   KA3 MVP
AMD 580X CrossFire™   DFI   Infinity CFX3200-M2/G
AMD 580X CrossFire™   Jetway   M2A580-GT5
AMD 580X CrossFire™   Sapphire        Pure CrossFire 3200
AMD 580X CrossFire™   Sapphire   Pure CrossFire 3200 Adv.
AMD 580X CrossFire™   PCPartner   AA1D

the specs should be somewhat similar, tho
EDIT: here is 5 of em compared (http://products.amd.com/en-us/MotherboardSideBySide.aspx?id=26&id=28&id=29&id=32&id=33).

You should turn on anisotropic filtering when you take those shots, it will prevent the floor that's far off from being blurry.

Took a look on the server, and I must say I'm really, really impressed with the quality of work that's been put forward. Congrats to all who submitted their maps  :) Regardless of who wins the contest, the ultimate winner is the tremulous community.

Question: Who made wrecktify? I was expecting top-notch releases from supertanker, odin, and brain/face (and they delievered ;)), but this one really caught me by surprise. It's quite nice :)

Hello,

The map contest judging is coming - even slowly as it is. As some of you have seen, there is a Tremcentral server up for the map contest. While anyone is welcome to go into that still - we, the judges, have found it nearly impossible to all meet at the same time + manage to successfully get an 8v8 Going. So, we have moved to plan B. The |SST| Tremulous server has been edited - and now will act, atleast for the next few days, as the balance testing server for the Tremcentral map Contest. A lot of things have been taken down in order to assure that no outside influence affects the balance tests, atleast as much as we could - and the players have made a lot of sacrifices for this.

BPS are temporarily 120.
Slots are temporarily 39 (When a judge is on, teams will be locked and 8v8 will be allowed only).
Share/donate has been disabled.
The Turretanglemod has been disabled.
Unlagged is off.
Several other things were taken out which might affect judging.

I know some of you will find us moving the testing grounds to SST 'uacceptable', however to those I'd like for you to completely understand that we've tried our best to keep it on its own server - but in order to judge and get an accurate balance score, this is necessary.

Anyone that would like to come to |SST| to try the maps out before they are 'officialy' released, feel free.

You can download the maps here:

http://tremcentral.com/cc1/ or, if you have a client with wwwdownloads - just connect to SST and it will download.
