Firefox 3 is officially released! For those of you who use this great web browser please download it, they're trying to set a new download record.

[I know Opera tries to be more standards compliant, Konqueror starts with a K, and IE is blue but please don't turn this into a "my browser is better than yours" thread.]

Well I would like to download, but... I think they got their site down with the 2mil+ ppl downloading in
24 7,5 hours
-
No thx, Opera 9.5 owns this shit.

Quite you.

I just downloaded it, it is gud, but is not like FF2 D: the navigation bar is unusual, and the simplicity remember to me IE 7 -.- (excepting for the toolsbar)

Quite?
QUITE??!!!?!!
You mean QuiEt.
Opera users dont suffer from those problems.
Firefox is no longer the geekiest kid on the block. Its too mainstream.
-
Its too mainstream.
Lack of obscurity is rarely a disadvantage...

Opera is not opensource is it ? Firefox is opensource, and IMO this is an advantage. I'm not talking about just being able to see the code, but the development model itself.

Yes, we see daily what open source development does to Tremulous. Have fun finding a server that does not run some decrepid derivant of Tremulous 1.1.0.

Oh yea, and OS=easier to find vulnerabilities.
When the whole world gets to see your code, you can sure as hell bet they will find things and exploit them. Especially when your code becomes quite popular.

That claim goes two ways: easier to find bugs, easier to fix bugs. If this were a disadvantage, then Mozilla- and WebKit/khtml-based browsers should have the most (known) vulnerabilities. Yet, Secunia and NVD data do not support that.
-
I'm using it now.

This was more of a suggestion, I didn't actually think anyone would listen. (I'm not that naive, sheesh!)

To quote Linus Torvalds, "Given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow." ;D This only applies when users are the developers and when they system is updated quickly and properly though...so that doesn't fully apply to trem where developers are gone a lot of the time :P
If you think Opera is cooler because it's not as mainstream then good for you, that's the same reasons Macs are leetsauce! It's like they want to be OpenSource, but then they don't just to tick you off and not let you have too much fun.
My browser favourites:
Text - w3m
Very compliant (Webkit) - Epiphany, Midori
Fast and clean - Charon
Bulky but with extensions galore (w00t!) - FF3. I liked FireFox 2 better myself, but meh.
-
Actually, as opposed to most open-source people, who use an application just because it's open-source, I use the application which does the best job. And for browsing the Internet, Opera is the application.

This thread is quickly degenerating into a #12 (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=6449.msg96837#msg96837) type debacle.

Wow... Just, wow.
Lava, I think you might want to draw your attention to that there. If that isn't spam, I don't know what is.
-
i just saw that spreadfire site and scrolled around different countries. north korea had 0 downloads lol.
so, firefox 3 seems a bit faster than ff2. but when i need to check my email and grades online, i use opera 9.5 cus its just plain faster and the bookmark page is awesome. if i download something, i tend to use firefox.

Isnt that reason enough?
-
You haxxed your speed dial ;-P
I use ff3 to watch youtube stuff and other flash related things that atm dont work with my opera.
For all my posting/browsing needs I use Opera.
I like them both. And compared to IE they are both god send.
-
FireFox has a speed dial extension, does pretty much the same thing as opera's, you can even dl the extension, modify it, and then install it.
-
And take up more ram.
Why should i have to go through the trouble of getting something to do something something else does?
You can buy a car from a junk yard, then get "extensions" to make it work like you want. Or you could go buy a prius.
-
With me, I don't like FireFox because the Gecko engine is pretty fail and I use tabs a lot, loads of tabs seem to suck with Firefox for me. I don't like Opera because it comes with junk I don't need, I have to tweak everything to how I want it the hard way since it doesn't just have extensions like Firefox does - and it's not open source.
Which is why neither of them are my main browser, right now Epiphany-webkit is since it's so light and it's open source so I compiled it with the latest webkit to be up to date, it's not a crummy Opera acid-test-passing-only-build where it looks way different than the normal browser just because it's the one that's up to date.
-
I love webkit.
Have you heard about FireFari? Dunno what ever happened to it, but it was an attempt to put webkit under ff
-
Same here, Webkit is pretty sweet when it's actually implemented into a clean and light browser. Gecko can be an amazing engine on a light weight browser too, but right now webkit has most of the rendering bugs worked out that gecko has had a list of for a long time.
I'd like to see both Opera and Firefox be lighter and render everything perfectly, then I might actually use one of them for more than just testing how stuff looks in them :P
-
I concur, less = more.
On a side note, Prius = fail.
-
Exactly, a side not.
-
Prius truly is fail. If you're going to get an ugly car that happens to be a foreign made Toyota, make it a supra that's at least Mark III.
-
Fixed previous post to make Paradox's post seem weird.
Mark III's are nice but I like the last gen Mark IV's, unfortunately every kid thinks they are "teh bestest car eva" thanks to the Fast and the Furious......fucking Hollywood, always screwing stuff up.
-
TinMan, whats funny is that a majority of Toyotas are assembled in America.
More so than say, GM or Ford.
-
@YourMama: Oh, I know right. Because that car he trashed was TOTALLY a 10 second car...yeah right Hollywood. It's the worst when kids think they're like that stock.
@Paradox: I'm saying that if you're going to get a Toyota, you might as well get one that's going to last more than 8 years and have some muscle to it. I'd rather buy the gas for the Mach IV than pay a specialist to have to explore the cramped depths of everything in the Prius's trunk and under the hood once you get some miles on it.
The Prius is assembled between Takaoka and Motomachi, Japan, which makes it a foreign car, that's not a bad thing. If you're buying a car from a company based in Japan then you should expect to get a car that is assembled in Japan.
It's hard for motor vehicle companies to keep plants running in America with unions and worker's rights when they can do it a lot cheaper and in different conditions elsewhere. My car is 35 years old, was built and assembled in America (specifically Wisconsin, although AMC had plants throughout the US and Canada), and it has never broken down or needed anything that wouldn't fall under expected maintenance for any car that's driven a lot. (Oil, filters, gaskets, sparkplugs, shocks, brakes, wipers, tires, and an upgrade to FM radio and CD player)
Buy a Prius, then get back to me in 10 years on how much you've spent on it from purchasing it, giving it gas, having someone else do tight tune-ups and maintenance on it, your replacement batteries, the electronics that fail on it, etc.
I'll start keeping track of how much I'm spending on my '72 Gremlin right now if you want ;D
-
Get back to the topic about your browser.
-
Okay - my browser owns! lulcats epiphanies are faster than red pandas!

If you had any experience you'd know that using any other browser on that console/any console would suck even more.
