Which tactic is the painsaw best suited to?
Alien Base Assault
It's a powerful weapon which makes light work of alien structures, but it's limited range often force you into the line of fire for defensive structures.
Human Base Defence
It's short range tends to limit the likelihood of accidental friendly fire, but it's only really useful against aliens who manage to penetrate your longer range defences.
Hunting Small Aliens
A painsaw will cut down anything up to about a marauder in record time, but their ability to outmaneuver a human means that it can be difficult to even hit (or even reach ) the target.
Hunting Large Aliens
In a tight space it's easy to run circles around most large aliens, but the amount of contact needed to bring down a large alien can mean putting yourself in a dangerous position for a long time.
Personally my vote goes for hunting large aliens; many of Tremulous's maps have tight corridors which restrict alien movement enough for a duel to favour the smaller human. Usually I use the painsaw with light armour rather than a battlesuit, in order to preserve stamina and the ability to dodge for longer. It's sometimes (although rarely) effective to equip a jetpack, since it allows you to make unexpected attacks from above, although most of the time it's a waste of credits.

I absolutely love it to painsaw a adv goon into his fat ass or cut a rant into pieces while he tries to dismantle my base. Also, those alien classes often underestimate the damage output. Supplied by a hitscan weapon and provided you use a battle suit it is absolutely deadly.

Painsaw is good when humans have one door entrances next to narrow corridors.
When aliens rush in, an adventerous human can hop over them out the door, and then turn around and psaw them in the ass. Prevents escapes too.

Also, this tactic can be used on the base access to humans on atcs. One battlesuit blocks the rant, a psaw jumps down to the middle and runs up behind the rant and saws his ass.
Though I have most fun using this tactic on tremor in the human back entrance to block escaping aliens. Since the hall is so narrow the have no chance dodging the pain.

I was thinking of rotcannon or niveus

Good idea, I'd not thought of trying it there before.

If you only have 100 C, a psaw rush can usually net you a goon and if your lucky, a tyrant.
Just blitz them, and never stop moving.
-
Psaw is okay for base rushes, but it is only really good if the defenses are mostly down already. Personally, I just about only ever pull it out to run around in front of base trying to kill larger aliens. Even if I dont get them, it has to still distract them.

I don't see the "massacring teammates" option ???
-
No, I excluded that on the grounds that I was looking for intelligent answers.

Hello,
Painsaw is a very good defensive weapon. For exemple, when there is a :tyrant: rush, you can saw them easylly and very fast. It's even better than a luci, because you don't shoot the structures.
Killing small aliens with that is very hard. It's more usefull with a goon or a tyrant.

I plussoie with what you said. Psaw rushes are efficient only with a helmet and aliens s1 or with a strong group.

Grab a teammate with something like a chainsuit or other high-panic setup, and each take a nade.
He makes the panic, you kill the OM and eggs. Only problem comes with trappers, may need a third teammate or even a fourth if fighting a good builder.
In a small game you can generally do a one man OM kill assuming you can dodge the trappers. Worthless if your team won't attack when the OM's down, but if they won't then your screwed anyway.
-
run up to overmind with psaw and nade, that is always fun
-
for me sitting places that only mara and lower can get like under utcs ramp/pier thingie
-
I like running blindly at things and sawing them.
-
I use psaw for base rushes most of the time. Especially in atcs when the aliens want to killwhore my team.
-
best use of the saw for base rushes is at the very start of ATCS in which you can run past the tubes :acidtube:, get behind the om :overmind: and saw leaving the aliens to go :o

Not when I am a granger - I always put an acid tube there ;-P

It's really good for all! I have used a saw to take down a goon, twitch kill a dretch, destroy an egg, return to base, and hold the line. (In one life, too!) Quite simply, it depends on the other aspects, like map, base setup, and alien skill.

Agreed if you have 500 credits and want to get enough for a chainsuit all you have to do is buy a bsuit and a psaw and sprint at a adv goon or anyother alien besides a adv marauder and a tyrant and you will make those 300 credits in a second.
-
Get behind the rants as they attack the turrets. Saw them in the ass. By the time they see there health falling its too late.
Don't even need armour if there isn't much else around.
-
true but it would help in case there are some other aliens, at least you would make up the credits...

Painsaws are good for melee.

Painsaw Squad.
Equip every human with a saw and rush like hell... Awesome!
-
And hope the aliens haven't done the same with Advanced Dragoons!
-
I use it to banzai the hell out of dragoons and tyrants before they banzai the hell out of my base.
-
I use it to bonsai the hell out of my garden.
-
Heh. +1.

I vote 'Hunting small aliens'. Not only because my idea of 'best' is the one that's most fun but because, unlike the other uses, when my target is small it only takes the most minor mistake from them to have them dead instantly.
-
i have killed a bsuit who had a saw with a granger once. small aliens can be just as dangerous as big ones one mistake and its on your head.
-
Mix a pain saw in any groups of humans.
It makes them far more deadly to any aliens, and makes for it easy to pull off a quick base rush.
With the insane dps, any alien smaller than a rant attacking your group dies almost instantly.
My favorite combination is a las or MD and pain saw, you can do huge damage, kill dretches fast, and decimate the enemy base.
