Title: Have Your Voice Heard! [Part 4] - An Art Contest!
Post by: khalsa on June 24, 2008, 06:53:07 pm
Announcing: The Tremulous Icon Art Contest!

It's time to bust out those art skills and submit your work for inclusion in the next version of Tremulous!

Starts: Now!
Submissions Due: 23:59:59 Wednesday July 23rd, 2008 GMT

What: Similar to Basilisco's Icon pack, we are looking for emoticons representing various things within Tremulous.

Formatting
Size: All icons should be 64x64 pixels except the weapon icons which should be 128x64 pixels (double wide).
Filetype: Transparent PNG/TGA

The full list of required icons is here. (http://tjw.org/emoticons.txt)

These icons will be used in-game in various places. Show us your art skills and your love of Tremulous, and get your art into the next version of Tremulous! We leave the colors/style up to you, so make them GREAT!

Submissions of complete icon packages is highly encouraged and will increase the chances of you winning, however if you want to make just one or two really good icons and submit them, we will judge them for inclusion as well.

How to submit:
Create an archive (.zip, .tar,etc.) of your set and please send an email to khalsa+emoticons@mercenariesguild.net with your submission attached, or as a link within the email to a direct download of your iconpack. Failure to abide by these instructions may result in your submission not being judged.

I would encourage you guys to also post your WIP's here so the rest of the community can have some fun as well :-). Please keep discussion to off-topic things to a minimum, and the moderators will help ensure this.

If you have any questions or comments, please post them below or email them to the above email.

Good Luck!

Legalese:

All submitted icons need to be licensed under the same license as all other Tremulous media - the  CREATIVE COMMONS ATTRIBUTION-SHAREALIKE 2.5 LICENSE (or later as we see fit, media in 1.2 will be under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 and these icons shall be as well). Please read http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/ to learn more about this license.

Winning icons will be asked to submit source files for verification and formatting purposes

Assuming there is more than one good submission, will it be possible to have lots of sets and let us choose?
Like put the images outside of the pure check like with huds.

Khalsa, should the human weapon icons go by the WIP human weapon models, or the excisting ones?

got any examples of where they would be used? or the art style? - 3d renders of the actual md3s, more cartoony...?

are they going to be embedded in text, hovering over peoples heads, what?
Title: Re: Have Your Voice Heard! [Part 4] - An Art Contest!
Post by: David on June 25, 2008, 02:28:42 pm
Embedded in text.  There for TJW's new emote icon things.  In game they will show up the same hight as normal text is.
As for style, your the artist :P
I would think like the icons used in the HL kill messages, but that is just my opinion, may be totally wrong.

Updates:

1 - TJW should be releasing an "easy" method for you guys to test your icons in a client soonish.

2 - Piper802 - That clearly isn't 64x64 or 128x64

3- Using the doublewide size is purely optional, we just thought it made weapons and stuff easier to make.

4 - It is unclear as of yet if these will be swappable, I wouldn't hold your breath.

5 - If you are seriously planning to enter, would be very nice of you to send me and email or post here so we know to expect *something*

That is all.

Its 64x64
It will show up a lot smaller in-game.

Forum icons are under 16x16, and we need 64x64.
If someone made some in that style it would be awesome though.

More information about using and testing emoticons:

If you're using Photoshop, here's how transparency is set up:

Make the image
Select what you want to be NOT-transparent (or select the transparent part then do selection | inverse)
Select | Save Selection
Save it as "Alpha 1" without the quotes, with the space
Save as a whatever_1x1.tga
When asked, say 32-bit

(I'm told this may be different in versions of Photoshop before CS)

Personally, I'm using the following method to test them and I think it's a little easier:
Use any client that runs up to date vms (mg, tf, basically any of them newer than tjw)
Have played on mgdev such that you have those vms / folders
Head to fs_homepath and put whatever_1x1.tga in homepath/mgdev/emoticons/whatever_1x1.tga
Use the "mods" menu to switch to mgdev
devmap atcs
sv_pure 0
devmap atcs
then say [whatever] and enjoy your emoticon
If you want to alttab back out to Photoshop, make changes, then save them, you can run /devmap atcs again (without repeating the other steps) and your changes will load

If you save your emoticon as .tga in such a way for us, that would be nice, but it's not a requirement for submission.

Everybody lost because nobody entered. You all complain so loudly that the devs don't do anything, but when we ask for a little help and input... you guys do nothing!

For those of you who haven't seen:

Wireddd made these by skinning the models, taking a screenshot,  and then downsizing them, I think this is what he did at least, not exactly sure. They aren't perfect but I think they look much better than mine xD

I have to note - viewing the icons on the forums or in your browser really does them a disservice. You really have to see them in-game to make any decent judgment.

Sorry for necro, but I use this icon (http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/8043/tremulous3et6.png), posted on this topic (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=4509.msg65317#msg65317) by f0rqu3.
It's a .PNG (because I use custom docks that use png), but I think we can convert it to .ICO easily.

With a gnarly voice. And whenever he says anything momentous, he gets a "The Who" scream.
