Title: Comic and Concept Art
Post by: + OPTIMUS + on June 25, 2008, 11:34:12 pm
here i wanna continue my desire about making a tremcomic. i become kindof 'jealous' seeing how natural selection is going with concept arts, so it's a kind of pseudo-concept :-)

i realised that if i wanna make a full story, I should be consequent about arms/weapons/ects.

so, at first, i am planning accessories regarding my "version" of trem. I want to make a kind of "manual", not technically for the game but with backgrounds and stuffs. if i can be ever finished with this, maybe i can make the full comic :-)

now first issue is the battlesuit. more coming later, maybe after moving.

If you really like to "dip" into the universe of tremulous f.e. do a full fledged comic with storyline, I recommend to read the stories supertanker has released. They are fan fiction at its best!

+1, will there be a "Have Your Voice Heard! [Part N] - Fan/Concept Art" ?

(if your version of tremulous has got a good enough background, it could be used for a mod ;) )

thnx all :-)

i don't want to make thing different than ingame. and more, i am thinking of solutions that explains things as they are ingame.
i'll check supertanker's stories, thanks for the suggestion.
doing this stuff is quite slow but i try to keep this updated.

Why don't you and super do a comic together, with him writing it and you drawing it?

The picture is amazing although it doesn't look very Alienish (in the Tremulous sense of way).

Post by: + OPTIMUS + on June 26, 2008, 12:49:02 pm
i will check tanker's writings and then we'll see. i have some weird ideas about the comic already, because i want to include servers, clans, lagging, respawning and many other out-of-game stuffs explained as if they are for a reason.

Feng... it's... not an alien... its a battlesuit. :-)

Title: Re: Comic and Concept Art
Post by: + OPTIMUS + on July 06, 2008, 11:28:58 pm
i stuck inside the concept a little bit...

i guess it happens because i choose one of the most complicated model in trem, as it has to be able to wield any weapons possible, so if i want to plan the hand, i'll have to keep it's structure in mind when redesigning all the weapons...

so i arrived to the idea that the weapons should also be a little bit more "custom" than the present ingame models. for this reason, probably i will change to plan weapons first.

and at the same time, i just didn't find any reason why a battlesuit shouldn't handle two weapons at once... as the game model is clearly designed for two... <.< well, the only reason i could guess is that the other hand is for launching grenades (the thing i really miss from trem after a dozen of finishing Q2). so in my world, the BS should take max 5 nades at once (which can be fired to a longer range) , but with strictly reduced ammo capacity. balancing it, i'll plan a kind of slow hyperblaster, better called tripleblaster (as well as a triple shotgun).
i'm planning trem's human "army" as a kind of quickly and badly equipped bastards, who's weapons are rapidly redesigned from "mining devices". for example, i imagined the painsaw as a hacked part of a telenode (kind of "negaport") - what would cause unregeneratable (what a beautyful word) damage to aliens.
theese kind of overstoned ideas could possibly explain ingame mechanics in a funny way, if i can ever manage to illustrate them well.

i also started to read supertanker's stories, but i didn'T finish it yet. still, i found some serious differences between our concepts of trem universe which i don't think we could ever give up for each others :-) but let's see after reading it all.

now back to pitstop :-)

thnx all.

well...
I've been spending so much of my fantasies to leech around this game. as well as my online activity of course... And now i cease fire a bit because i have to deal with irl thingies.
I made some dozens of sketches about the armors and the aliens, and even some characters who would take place in the comic i'm planning to make.
I planned to make an overall design update on the game, independently from the way it is evolving.
iT's all about expressing my opinion of the game in shapes and lines and shades. ofc, due my pen+paper rpg past, i think of it as a system that i probably also think differently as others. and well yes, independently from the written lore dudes who i respect very much.

i have very little time to develope this but i hope someday i can release my trem webcomic.

cya! :-)

Dude,

You are one of my favorite artists. Don't quit. Keep us updated from time to time. Would still be very interested in collaborating, even if it were just copy-editing and such. It would, of course, be your Tremulous "world" and not the Q: TJ: TFZI pocket-omniverse. I will not sully your concepts with my science-fantasy imaginings, just help you to fully realize your own. Good luck with it.

This thing will bite off your fingers and then when you are rolling on the floor in agony it constructs a hovel right on your head so you can't move and lay a large amount of eggs into you. Then it calmly climbs up on a pipe above you and watch them hatch while making taunts. When you explode, it's satisfied. That's how evil it is. That will teach noobs not to tease grangers with a damn blaster.

Welcome back, Tycho!
comic is going to delay as usual although i started to develop it a little bit more.
there was a good chance for forcing it as there is a comic contest for Galactica magazine recently, but unfortunatly the topic is.... steampunk. it would be just a bit too cheesy to base the whole space technology on basilisk fart...
but i will do something for it anyways and as soon as i develop a well-going process of making an actual comic, i won't stop till i make this tremmy one :-)
hope to see you in-game too!

Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 40 days.

this is my redone basilisk concept.
yes, it has only 4 legs, because the back ones grew together into a sticky tail what makes the lisk available to stick to the ground while grabbing its foes.
et cetera.

the 'medic' cross is supposed to be the indicator of the medkit. it would be interesting if aliens and teammates could know if someone's medkit is active/used/unused.

the best thing in this is that if i dont work on it, my bro does.
hey i got an excellent idea: how about to move tremulous to a better engine huh?

No wonder he's angry, you covered his face in paint!

Although, yet again! this is some very very talented art, I'm really liking it.

I must ask though, as my curiosity has been aroused (and that may not be the only thing) what program(s) were used in creating these fine fellows?

the head is surely Zbrushed, tho i think the armor is made in 3DsMax. not sure.
possibly he dragged it back to Zbrush for the skinning.
i also want to learn it so i'll ask :-)

@nub: no, he's making concepts and models for animation films. i'll look up the thing you came up with tho.

@win: this way of concept we came up with is rather different than the official way, if i may say 'official' to a community projectTM. i'm just as curious of possible evolution of the human model+armors as any other regular player and crawling for a new opening scene/any design update. however, my bro will not continue this figure unfortunately

@moo's: confirmed that the armor, such as the previous weapon is 3Dmaxed(modeled and skinned). its skin also contains alpha channels to bump the text/erosion differently.

well, this could almost go to the models section too.
bro's work also. note that he never played trem so he only has some distant memories of how a tyrant looks like :-)

I'm going to have to second the request for a better engine. Ioquake3's technical limitations are what made me drift away from my modeling. On the other hand, the devs are strongly against any new engine.

The Unreal 3 engine is available for free, so it might be neat to but together a team to make a Tremulous 2. EDIT: and most of this work seems like it's done in a different style than Trem anyways.

Everyone keeps wanting a new engine, yet the devs are the ones who will have to do the coding for it. Let's face it, if they decide to code everything again for a whole different engine, we won't see completion for at least 2 years.

note that this zbrush model is more of a sculpture than an actual game model capable of animation and smooth ingame performance.
creating and animating theese stuffs is just as much effort than programming it.

but lets be smart and lets see first how NS2 comes out of such a situation.

for your foldableness:
(bro's Work in progress)

Trying to get back into modelling, so I thought I'd use your designs as a starting point. Hope you don't mind. :]

The one on the left is earlier in development but in some ways I prefer to it's current state. Anyhow I'll carry on making it as close to the specification as possible as that's the mission.

Edit:

Normal maps would be cool to try out (never done them before) but remember that if this is a trem-model, normal maps aren't supported.

I still need help though, I only managed to do that by editing the data pk3 file (yes, I know that's bad -_- I made a copy of the original). I just can't seem to get my own pk3s to be read.

Nice! Your mod pk3 should be in homepath/base, have only your model/textures in it (in the right subfolder), and it's name should be alphabetically after data-1.1.0.pk3.

Nice! Your mod pk3 should be in homepath/base, have only your model/textures in it (in the right subfolder), and it's name should be alphabetically after data-1.1.0.pk3.

I know this but it just won't work. Homepath's the one in program files for windows right? The application data folders might be screwing me over somehow...

EDIT: Well, here's the pk3 (http://ul.to/4ct5rx)[BROKEN]. See if you can do better with it.

RE-EDIT: For the latest version go to the latest post!

NOTICE - This work is by no means finished and the author does not consider this a release especially without consent from optimus <3

Title: Re: Comic and Concept Art
Post by: UniqPhoeniX on September 07, 2010, 07:24:34 am
You have KugelSchaft.pk3/KugelSchaft/models/weapons/rifle/, but should be KugelSchaft.pk3/models/weapons/rifle/. Adding 'z-' in front of pk3 file name helps too sometimes. Also, Program Files/Tremulous is the basepath (try /fs_(tab) ).
All non-default .pk3s/mods/etc should be in homepath/base, or if mod specific, then in the right mod folder.

EDIT: Since this post I've been working on improving the mesh and making a more space efficient texture file (attached). I'm still working on that so in the meantime here's (http://ul.to/8qqtmg) a rough version with the other side of the gun slapped on to it.

..and here's (http://ul.to/qyrcv4) the bloody one! (possibly MORE rough)

however it sure needs changes at least on the 'inner' side, so as ammo cartridges. BUT its working and thats awesome!!!

originally it was going to be something like this.
empty shells and cartridge shoukd ofc fall sideways, but full ones should be loaded from below (aka: there is actually a reason why the lower side exists :-) )
unfortunatelly the model's current arms won't let this gun to be held properly.
i hope there will be sometime to make a remake concept!
size fits now imho!

Wouldn't it look cooler if the arm went inside the hollow shell thing?

The thought occured to me too, but the idea has issues. What room is left for the guns mechanisms? Is that really comfortable/convenient?

Also the way he holds it means he would have his hand going through the front of the gun instead of holding it.

the aliens went from a hybrid q4 strogg/tyranid/locust look, into a lesser human scale parasite (http://cloverfield.wikia.com/wiki/Parasite).

i guess it happens because i choose one of the most complicated model in trem, as it has to be able to wield any weapons possible, so if i want to plan the hand, i'll have to keep it's structure in mind when redesigning all the weapons...

so i arrived to the idea that the weapons should also be a little bit more "custom" than the present ingame models. for this reason, probably i will change to plan weapons first.

and at the same time, i just didn't find any reason why a battlesuit shouldn't handle two weapons at once... as the game model is clearly designed for two... <.< well, the only reason i could guess is that the other hand is for launching grenades (the thing i really miss from trem after a dozen of finishing Q2). so in my world, the BS should take max 5 nades at once (honest phenq customer reviews (http://ohdivinehealth.com/phenq-review/)) , but with strictly reduced ammo capacity. balancing it, i'll plan a kind of slow hyperblaster, better called tripleblaster (as well as a triple shotgun).
i'm planning trem's human "army" as a kind of quickly and badly equipped bastards, who's weapons are rapidly redesigned from "mining devices". for example, i imagined the painsaw as a hacked part of a telenode (kind of "negaport") - what would cause unregeneratable (what a beautyful word) damage to aliens.
theese kind of overstoned ideas could possibly explain ingame mechanics in a funny way, if i can ever manage to illustrate them well.

i also started to read supertanker's stories, but i didn'T finish it yet. still, i found some serious differences between our concepts of trem universe which i don't think we could ever give up for each others :-) but let's see after reading it all.

now back to pitstop :-)

That same thing happened with me so many times. I start with nice ideas and prepare my art work. then I get lost in my own concepts.
You sounded to really into it. I would love to see you work if you have done anything more in this one.
