Title: Archao : A beginner map [DEAD]
Post by: 22grandjob on July 07, 2008, 01:02:34 am
Here is my map Archao. I am releasing it unfinished because I have not worked on it for ages and would rather it was used. So it's here for any beginners to have a look at. And possibly alter it, edit it, work on it, or even play on it. It's up to you what happens :)

It's been worked on further than the pictures and is a good map for people who want to learn the map making skills or possibly just get ideas :)

Hope this helps peeps,

G

That would be true, except that:

Look and learn from the decent .map releases out there - try SimonOC's Q3 maps (http://www.simonoc.com/pages/design.htm) and Dasprid's maps (http://www.dasprids.de/files/Maps).

I had trouble with the water because the no draw shader didn't work for me somehow. Therefore it left a cloudy look on the joining brush areas. Keep in mind it is a beginner map, I am by no means an excellent mapper, I just enjoy churning out ideas and encorparating them. It is a good map for people who like the fun parts of mapping and want to give it a go. I would have got round to touching up the map with all your suggestions but I have a tonne of University work :( Hence the map ending up here. So I just wanted people to get the basic map making skills and help people out. Thx for the advice tai but I'm not going to be working on it in the near future.

Taiyo's point is that your map is a showcase of how not to create maps. If your intention is to show people what not to do, then you are doing great, but in your post, you suggest that people can learn from this map, which is a very bad suggestion.

That would be true, except that:
  • There is no caulking. Generally, hidden surfaces should be caulked else they'll be drawn.
  • Brushes that should be detail are structural. This results in an excessive number of PVs.
  • The use of a single water brush is inefficient. Smaller brushes that only occupy the water-filled area ought to be used.
  • There is no hinting. Much unnecessary rendering work can be avoided with proper hinting.
  • There are several overlaps and z-fights. These are visible in Radiant as well as in-game.

Look and learn from the decent .map releases out there - try SimonOC's Q3 maps (http://www.simonoc.com/pages/design.htm) and Dasprid's maps (http://www.dasprids.de/files/Maps).

this gives a chance for new mappers to fix these errors, though it WOULD have been better if this was already done :)
