Title: FPS lagg :'(
Post by: trigun74 on July 19, 2008, 10:23:07 AM
Lately i have had really bad FPS lag, i used to max 125, now i average a 60-70 on a game with 2 or 3 other people, and around 1-30 in a game with more than 4, i do not understand why this is happening, and it's really pissing me off, here's my system specs

Operating System: Windows Vistaâ„¢ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6001) Service Pack 1
Processor: AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-64 (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory: 2046MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS
Tremulous client: Amanieu's
Hud: Oticz 2.0

1) Check your computer for viruses.
2) Your card could be damaged.
3) You might have resource-hogging processes/tasks/whatever running in the background.
4) If it's none of the above, Windows could be borked.

You could always turn off some of the effects in Trem, if nothing else works.

1 - Done that
2 - maybe, but I don't know
3 - only things i have running in background are msn and windows media player (i have closed them, but to no avail)
4 - ahha, lets blame it on windows :P

Thanks for your help guys, maybe if anyone else has a solution ???

An off the wall suggestion:

It's summer. Check your video card or processor's temperatures and see if they aren't dangerously high. If they are they could be underclocking themselves to prevent damage(you might be running a service to do this for you).

Off-topic: Would heat affect a Wi-Fi card as well?

If some part of it is melted, maybe. The signal(strength) however should not be affected. Of course all hardware suffers from heat, soooo a definite maybe.

Hmm, thanks. I guess it's just the base station affecting the signal strength.

Also other types of signals can affect yours, so make sure there isn't any interference.

You run Vista, of course its going to lag.  :P
My friend has the same problem, he has Vista and a computer which far satisfies the reqs. for Tremulous but he lags aswell. Hence why i said it's a problem with Vista. Or maybe i just love my Mac too much.

Vista has great specs to its hardware, but the worst possible software to run things on. Its most likely to be a software problem because Vista is known to have quite a few problems. If you have only 2 gigs of RAM and 2.2 GHz, I'm assuming you have a laptop, hopefully is not Dell, because that would just answer all your questions. I would prefer to use task manager to close all programs not seen on the desktop or bar menu, to have less RAM usage thus leading to higher FPS.

Try completely removing your video drivers and then reinstalling with the latest version. Also, the 8600M gpu had a major design flaw iirc.

Hmmm.. i have a similar problem on a laptop...
basically same secs as yours except it has  Nvidia 8400ms (128mb) i think and an intel 2.2 core 2 duo.

This same laptop runs other games like Microsoft Flight SimualtorX (Demo) much better than m desktop which used to (but now dosen't really :'() get 90fps. Except i only get like 30fps =[.

It might be to do with the way tremulous utilizes the graphics card or  the cpus through win Vista maybe?

Did u drop your laptop? Mine got a bang on a desk corner i hope that wasn't the reason game is gone bad. Maybe graphics Card or RAM is damaged?

Pit i never ever reached 125fps... I maxed at about 70 =[
