Look in base/models/players/level*. They are MD3 models. Have a look at this Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Md3) for information on the MD3 file format.

You pack it up in the same file structure as it is in data-1.1.0.pk3, just dont modify data-1.1.0.pk3. Make your own pk3.
pk3 files are just renamed zip files.

You'll need to play on unpure servers to see your custom models. Instead of connecting to a server try loading a map with /map (no cheats) or /devmap (cheats) to test your model.

rename your pk3 to something starting with zzz, that way it's stuff will override everything

There is no clean way to override default models at the moment. If you had done some searching, you would have found my question about this exactly topic. And even an explanation why is it possible, but better not to do.

I am still gradually pushing AMP, and it might include the model change for the mapper to use.

open your console and look what's up in there

it's likely that you get an unpure message

Start the game from within a terminal window. Thus, after it shuts down you can see the error messages.
