Title: Loading maps on GTKRadiant
Post by: Lonly on August 20, 2008, 11:03:34 pm
Hi i got a quick, simple (i hope) short question. Ive made map. Im finishing it. But i tried to make it look like acts but it looked NOTHING like it. I wanted to make a map like Acts 5 years of battle, or something, but i just can't seem to find something on gtkradiant to load a map. I would like to know if theres some way to load a map on gtkradiant and mix that map up.

just put the map in tremulous/base/maps, or if you dont have it, and want to get it from the pk3, then find out how to
decompile. (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Q3Map2#Decompiling_into_a_.map) (note: everything will be totally ruined, but the brushes will still be there)

If you are using Win, I recommend PakScape (http://imn2rc.einsteinbennyboy.com/tremulous/PakScape.zip) to open the .pk3 with.  ;)

not pakscape use 7zip (http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=sevenzip&filename=7z457.exe&use_mirror=voxel) its a lot simpler

Any program capable of reading and writing normal .zip files will suffice. If you use 7z, make sure you use the zip format, as 7z can use a variety of compression algorithms.

Your best bet is to ask the guy who made ATCS for the original .map

who made acts? And can you please let me have the .map for acts?

who made acts?

Open the file "map-atcs-1.1.0.pk3" in "tremulous/base/" via an archive manager and read the file "atcs.txt"

omg i converted it with q3map2build and it looks so cool! I got a question, how like delete a wall, or like erase part of it? Or how did atcs-2yb (i am using) have cracks in the walls and a whole on the top of the bunker and the side?

I had the same problem because i just read the tremulous mapping guide. Press shift click to re select something and ctrl shift click to select a face of a brush. Any more questions pm me.

thx! Please this is last question, how do you like extend a target_kill or just like leave it there and make a new target. Also how do you make something like this:

or whats the command for gas to come out from a pipe?

I am not quite sure if tremulous has any "gas dynamics" at all. Effects like fog are done via shaders. I have never seen f.e. fog move around. Also animated liquid is usually/always(?) a shader me thinks.

And if you cannot spell properly, don't tell other people what rights they do not have.

The target_kill should be be targeted to the area where the person steps in / falls in / ect to be killed.

Uhmm even if you decompile the map you cant edit the .map im almost certain, its not even contained in the .pk3
And for the target_kill you have to target/point it to a trigger brush =D

Decompiling is getting .map out of the .bsp. It won't be perfect, things get messed up, but I don't see why 1 wouldn't be able to edit it...

Sorry that i have a problem as a mapper when noobs like to steal other peoples work and edit it.

A well-known Dutch motto: "It is better to steal something good then to invent something bad."

Now, looking at most of the maps on this forum, I suggest people steal more.

That's actually pretty good reasoning, even if it is a little twisted. So yes: As long as it keeps you from releasing awful maps, go for it.

No I don't think thats true. I'd rather someone make the worst map in the world and learn what they are doing from doing so. Then they don't have to steal other peoples work as now they know how to make their own maps.

You could take that from two views: 1) The person whose work is being used, or 2) the community.

1) It's annoying. They should learn to make their own maps.
2) It's a relief. They aren't flooding the forum with crappy maps.

No, they'd be flooding the forums with copies of existing maps, which would be just as annoying.

If those 'copies' are good maps, then I do not see a problem. A good map is a good map, no matter where it comes from.

Well I suppose so, I just wouldn't like to have hundreds of maps with the same architectural/texturing style, that's all.

Again, if it's a good map, what's the problem? If it's the 500th maps that looks exactly like the 499 before it, it's not a good map.

This is certainly worth discussion, but not in a thread whose original topic is almost completely unrelated.

1) It's annoying. They should learn to make their own maps.
if you dont want your maps to be reused, set them on a license which doesnt allow copying
either you want to put it under a free license, knowing what that means, either you don't
you don't make a map free baceause the "free" stamp looks good, that's a really hypocrite behaviour

of course, free as in free speech, not as in free beer

Exactly my point. The only reason they are decompiling is so they can edit them to be "better" but they don't know how to map in the first place so they are not making anything anyone wants and are probably making such minor edits that you 1) Don't even notice the change 2) Makes the map worse 3)Messes up game play and balance of the map.

If those 'copies' are good maps, then I do not see a problem. A good map is a good map, no matter where it comes from.

The problem is that 1) They didn't ask the map creator if they were ok with it. 2) The maps generally wont be good since they don't know how to map in the first place. 3) They are being lazy noobs.

..and you did not even notice it

1) They didn't ask the map creator if they were ok with it
that's what licensing is for
