Taken from The Phykik Clan Forums (http://phykikclan.freeforums.org/tremboxes-t96.html)
Just the other day I came up with a great idea. The whole Trem community could get out their Spontaneous Mapping caps and create a one-room map, like a component.
This map doesn't need to be playable, i.e. it doesn't need Intermissions or Base Models, but it does need lights and entities.
These 'TremBoxes' can have any theme, any textures (within reason) and can include models, teleporters, cameras (not intermissions) and any entities, but must be self-sustained (no teles going to someone else's TremBox which they still have to make).
Here's one i've prepared earlier:
This one does, however, have intermissions, models and cameras so that it is easily playable.

Posting screenshots is a must, BUT you dont have to post the download if you dont want to. I just wanna see how good the community is at mapping without making a contest out of it. Speaking of contests, i guess you could post one of your contest-maps if you wanted...

Interesting idea. I wish you luck with it.

I'm assuming these maps are going to be put together in some fashion to create a large map of many styles, eh? Perhaps there should be set guidelines to doorway height and width, room size, etc?
-
they could be put together, but i wont be doing it. and i think the only restrictions i can put on the door heights/widths is that a NON-MODDED tyrant must fit through. room sizes, hmmmmm, maybe they can be as big as you want, without aliens not getting through, like if a team of hummies can sit at one end and just massdrive aliens constantly, then its too big or too open.

Sounds somewhat like OS42 (http://os42tremmap.sourceforge.net/), which appears to have failed.
If it hasn't, then get to work Paradox and whoever else is/was working on it.

community map development is like Communism its a cool idea but never works.

Just found this: http://forums.urbanterror.net/index.php/topic,12279.0.html
Assuming it works well, it would remove a lot of the technical issues with collective mapping.

The problem I can still see with collaborative mapping is that you will always have continuity issues due to mappers different styles and abilities unless the mappers are working very closely with each other. Collaborative mapping works well with two or even three people (see face and Brain and the "OdinTanker"), but, in my opinion, fails when too many people try to loosely collaborate.

I tried a project for collaborative mapping a long time ago.
It never really got off the ground.

That's what we were talking about.
