Title: Weekly Tremulous Comic - Issue #2 is out now!
Post by: Hendrich on September 13, 2008, 03:09:01 am
*Warning, large amount of JPEGS on this page!*

Meh, something I did while I was bored, making a Tremulous comic. Well, its not really a comic, just a bunch of JPEGS stuck together to make a story in a very elementry school fashion, but oh well. Anyways, give me a forum Email if your intrested me in helping me make the next issue, I need help getting people to move for the screen shots. Hope to see your comments! :D

BTW, I decided to make and release one every weekend, it might be released Friday, Saturday or Sunday. I hope you'll enjoy it!

This is a story of a noob called Haxxor who starts off Tremulous as a noob. Read his adventures as he tries to survive Tremulous and its..umm...*cough* many obstacles. ;)

No offense, but I would suggest a better storyline and better grammar.

Suggestion:

Use a client with celshading and/or blooming to produce a more comic style look.

So you had two people working on it and it still had simple spelling and grammar errors by the time you were done.

It honestly boggles the mind.

Hendrich (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4813) != Henners (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=880)

Also, that gamma is painful, turn on FSAA etc, and like someone said above, play around will celshading or whatever.

Hello,
Good work ! Like someone said, you could use a client which supports cellshading/bloom/celoutline.
TREMFUSION (http://www.tremfusion.net/trac/) ! :]

And again, I post the link of what I had done with it :
-> Here <- (http://www.gcc.ht.cx/tremulous/Screenshots/TremFusionNiceScreens/)

This one (http://www.gcc.ht.cx/tremulous/Screenshots/TremFusionNiceScreens/RedBase.jpg) look likes an horror film. Hmmm, Aliens : The revanche of the evil grangwa ?

Hey ppl, I'm happy to see some people enjoying the comic over last weekend :D

Anyways, since I got more positive replies then I thought I would have, I'll start making the next comic for next week, hopefully it'll be longer and it'll kick off with the storyline (If you want to call it a storyline :P ). This comic was a pilot showing Haxxor's first reaction to Tremulous, which didn't go so well, and it was a test to see how good I am at doing comics, which I guess I'm not really good at doing. :P

BTW, I like the idea of the comic looking cartoony, and I loved the TremFusion pics that had Bloom/Cel-shading/whatever on, I'll start using it right away, and I got an idea how Haxxor gets those options on too. ;)

Also, I like the contributions made by the members in the fourm to improve the comic, thanks!

But I'll want to try the TremFusion Cel-shade look, it looks like the cartoony textures I like. :D

I found out it might not gonna happen, why? Because I tried running the TremFusion client and it screwed up and said S.DLL was not found or something, unless someone is kind enough to tell me how to fix this or get a running copy of TremFusion for windoes I'll keep usuing the old client. :(

NEVER!

if something wants to be funny, any failed effort on trying to bring it to a "higher" level of visuals would only distract the viewer.
that is the key of BLASTED.

this also means that "real" ingame visuals are almost too much to much for telling a story that is so much more simple than the actual game reference, yet can be much more funny.

actually, it's something that is really hard to understand even after long years of studying graphic design and animation, and more than two years of doing those as a professional...

take a look at south park. it's hilariously efficient while it's visuals are far beyond zero. if it would have better visuals, it would drew attention from the subject, what is as rude just as much as it's honest.

PS. How do you get Cel-shading/Bloom/etc on?
Title: Re: Weekly Tremulous Comic
Post by: Bissig on September 15, 2008, 11:28:00 pm
It is the predecessor to the FSM client.

Those are some of the cvars used:

r_bloom "0"
r_bloom_alpha "0.3"
r_celshadalgo "0"
r_celoutline 0

r_bloom "1" activates blooming and is effective immediately.
r_celshadalgo sets the used algorithm:

Working values:

1 -> colored lightmap
2 -> decontrast
10 -> kuwahara (buggy)
11 -> kuwa+blur (looks less buggy)
12 -> blur+kuwa (buggy)
13 -> blur+kuwa+blur same as 11?

20 -> snn (slow)
21 -> snn+blur (slower)
22 -> blur+snn (slower) looks good
23 -> blur+snn+blur (slowest)

You need to do a vid_restart to activate celshading.

Attention: Celshading slows down map loading times by something between the factor 3 and 10! Your fps might get crippled badly too. But since your producing a comic, I don't think fps matters ;-)

Suggestion:
Try "5" for the celshadalgo. Activate blooming. Activate celoutline. Put alpha transparency on the bloom to something like 0.4/0.3

umm yeah but it is not southpark. What you said is pretty irrelevant. The guy who made the comic wants to make it cartoon like (he tried to use celshading right?) So that is why I told him to use gimp oil paint. Are you trying to go off-topic or something?

I agree about the power of simple graphics in this case, but I wouldn't say screenshots from tremulous are too much. In my opinion it's ideal, as we're so used to the graphics already, there should be nothing distracting about it.

Also note that a simple style works best when it's consistent! Pick a graphical standard and stick with it. Changing the style draws attention to it (a tool which can be used cleverly, but is best reserved for special occasions).

Edit: Something (http://uploaded.to/?id=b9o2zr) I made while while back.

Post by: + OPTIMUS + on September 16, 2008, 01:03:32 pm
i said to stay with simplicity when i saw that there is some effect-overdose on the screenshots.
if it's unimportant for something to look different, it shouldn't be different.

anyway, there was no offense in anything i said :-S just advice.

Well, I got soem news. After some testing with the new cel-shading graphics, I'm afraid I'll have to drop that idea. When Cleoutline is on, theres some lines (epmty polygonal textures) that appear on the human's face, which is not what I like. I don't think this problem can be fixed because its a polygon problem, and the only way to fix it is to change the polys in the human model, which is what nobody wants to do. Sorry Bissig, it was a nice idea. But, I might like to use Bloom, its a nice feature to the game. :D

So far the photoshopped pics are nice, good work Jalaco (and others)!

Eh, you don't have to use the outline feature. Just turn it off by setting it to "0" again. Celshading does not depend on that feature.

Yea, but nothing looks cartoony even with cel-shading on, I dunno why. It looked normal to me wehn cel-shading was on. :P

Anyways, I'm having a hard time to get people to work for the comic, so I need ppl to pose for me! For the next release I'll need (minnumum) 3-(maximum) 6 people to help me, I need a server named "Newbie Training Arena" (In white lettering) with a player acting as admin to work in, and I need a photoshop-er to do some photo-editingfor me. I'll have to be really bossy to get people to pose the position I need and its probaly gonna be hard to get all I scenes I need (Yes, I got a script :P ) ,but you'll be credited for your work. :D

If you like to contribute for the next release, PM my mail box fourm thingy (Its the mail picture below my name) and tell me what would you like to help me on (either Photoshop editing, posing or providing the server and monitoring the server) for the comic and when I got everyone I need I'll send send a message to be on the server when you get it (You may wanna check a bunch of times, 'cause I might live in a different time zone).

I know its alot to ask for ffrom the community, but I hope I can grab a few people to help me. I'll be waiting for your replies!

or you could ditch gimp, load the pic into inkscape and use path->trace bitmap->brightness cutoff. you'll get a similar effect to gimp's colour->threshold. it'll be less detailed and a bit rounded off, but it will have the advantage of being infinitely scalable if you ever wanted to make one of your comics into a poster or something.

Doesn't that not actually free cpu cycles, just limit the frames displayed?

Everything runs at that frame rate, so it should free up CPU too.

It doesn't free up CPU, unless you are using a latest svn client (tremfusion & mgclient)

Well, flame it or fame it, love it or shove it, Issue #2 is released, way behind schedule btw. :P

I wanted this one to be longer then the first, and it was, way too long. I found out that doing someting like this takes (lots) of time, dedication and paitence. Even if its not that good of a comic, I learned alot on how to make one and what it takes to do so, and best of all, through the fustration and panic, I had alot of fun doing it, and so did my friends ho helped me make it. I have to admit, the storyline and jokes are pretty bad, but I feel proud of my work. Hmm, maybe I should stop before I get too cocky. I guess I'll continue making the comic, maybe even find out how to get it into actual comic strips.

With suggestions like this:

I can improve, thats good for something. I guess I'll only post 2 comics every topic I make. I only hope I can inspire someone of making a even better comic then mine, I defenetly got my insperation from many web comics, maybe they'll get a kick out of mine. Well, enough talk, I'll take a short break for awhile, play and learn some more then I'll continue on it. The point of this comic was to enjoy Tremulous fanatics and maybe ge a chuckle or two. Well, it was fun,until next time Henners.

I'd like to suggest using popular Tremulous terms as well, such as:

-Kurwa (polish)
-Aimbut (frenchies)
-NO U
-Asshat
-Dretchhat

EDIT: (ninja-add)

-Phais
-Phail
-Whf  (presumably "Wtf," but all the mexi's say it this way for some reason.)

You've inspired me to make my own comic-like story. Watch as I shamelessly link (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=9218.0) to it.
