Howdy guys,
I've gotten a lot of requests the last few weeks to get rid of the default SMF forum theme, and frankly I was sick of looking at it myself.
So here you go! Note: THIS IS THE TEMPORARY - NOT FINAL theme.
A new, fully custom theme is being developed for the new site, however the launch of that could be who knows when (well I do, but you don't). In the meantime I thought it'd be nice to have something in the interim.
That being said, I know a lot of you are very gifted artists and whatnot, Paradox made whatever images you see that look tremmy so far, but if you see and icon/image that you want to make a replacement - feel free!
Just email them to me (Khalsa+forum [AT] Mercenariesguild.net) with a direct link to the old image and the new image and you have a 79.457% chance of me replacing the old one!

It's cool, but a little big.
-

Huh?
Anyway, this looks like a neat start (though, as moose said everything's WTF HUEG) and I suppose it could only get better. Any chance of the useless karma system getting nuked from orbit while you're messing with stuff?
-
I think this one is great :D
-
for changing images, we need the exact picture size (if it matters), and the name of the default trem logo font.
ASAP ;-)
let's not use an icon of something what is probably the only symbolized stuff what is looking totally different ingame ;-)
-
I like it, much better than the default blue on white (that one hurts my eyes).
-
This is already a hundred times better than the old one, and a new one is coming?
Awesome.
-
Let us hope this temporary theme is very temporary, since it makes the forums a very annoying place to read text.
-
i like it.
-
I have to agree with Lava, forum is really hard to read. Also links and text look same so it's hard to notice where's link.
Last post thing while browsing forums is well hidden too :0
-
Can I ask Khalsa if you would allow users to choose their own theme? That way I do not have to suffer this theme, or any future themes I might not like.

tis quite a painfully obvious solution to the dreaded ailment of bland-idity.
but i like these new forums they look very snazzy wazzy
-
I prefer the default SMF theme to this one.
How about adapting the theme used when we were using phpBB?
-

I have also wondered why users were never allowed to switch the theme :-\
-
It's pretty good. However I think the avatar/display picture options have disappeared in this layout.
-
old forum theme +1
...
i mean the one before the old.
-
I personally think the new post images are way too large. The rest is ok for me :)
-
There you go - you can now choose to use the default them 'Core' in your profile options.
However we will be only supporting whatever the forum default is, so unless it's a huge issue - any problems with the non default theme on these forums will be fully unsupported.
Khalsa
-
Thanks Kalsa :)
-
Thanks for the quick execution, Khalsa.
-
Should have an option to use a theme from your hard drive...
-
Maybe if this wasn't so big it would be nice but I have to agree with Lava it's pretty damn annoying. Sticking with the default for now, while it does lack a Tremulous feel it certainly is nice and clean.
-
Actually the "new" theme gives me no tremulous feel, but it's less clean
-
Make the text a bit darker. That would up the contrast and make it more readable.
In the thread list maybe put the replies colum after the subject one.
-
Whoa. A lot of stuff happened while I was asleep.
-
Also feel free to suggest any other SMF theme really. I just kind of chose the first semi-decent one I saw and then got paradox to add a couple icons and such.
Only put about 30 minutes of actuall work into making this theme work, most of which was getting things for moderators to work properly and the badges to show up correctly.
If you see/have/make another SMF theme I don't mind putting the same 30 minutes into it if the community thinks it is better than this one.
In fact I would much prefer a better SMF theme that felt more Tremulousy, I just don't have the time to commit into looking/making one atm. If you build they (me) will come!
Khalsa
-
hm....I have a couple of favorite smf themes I use, like alienation (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=114) and underground (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=846).
idk if any of them have a 'tremulous' feel though.....maybe this (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=486)?
-
ya! well its better than the standard and i like it.
-
http://www.phpbb.com/styles/demo/3.0/index.php?style=125

-
Spongebob one is best. I will install and make that the default one shortly
-
Sweet! Though it would be pretty funny if you could have that as an option.
-
lol @ Posts themes
link to some themes compatible with 1.6: http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?action=search;version[]=39
in code cause smf doesnt like his own links :)
-
Vast majority (95%) of 1.1.5 themes will work, as well as a large percentage of 1.1.4 themes.
Khalsa
-
I like the new temp theme other than the overly brightness hurts my eyes. Hope the new one is a little less hmm bright?
The contrast between outside and the text box is almost just too much.
-
This theme physically hurs *my* eyes.
-
So is it possible to use a theme that isn't on here? Like a client-side installation?
-
This fourm theme looks kick-ass, I love it! :D
Good job Developers! >:D
-
Would be cool, but on the index page I liked it more when you could read what the latest topic/post was.
Why do we need to see how many topics and posts are inside from the index page...?
/me waits for the newer one.
-
You mean like how it says
Last post by your face on Today at 04:04:15 PM in Re: Temporary New Forum ...
?
-
I thought there was another theme being worked on, as this is the temporary one.
-
No one likes my icons.
Fine, ill cover the next ones with poop.
-
Will the final theme be released so that we can use it in other SMF forums?
-
Wtf?
Other notes:
1. Put "Show unread posts since last visit." and all the other links back to the left side
2. Icons are ok, but wtf is that shiny metal/icish "Tremulous forums" thingie?
3. Text size too small in general
4. "Reply" and other "action" based links are way to grey
5. Make that header between "Home Help Search Profile..." links and the path announcement smaller in height
6. Btw.: Tremulous 'native" colours are: Red, Blue and brownish/beige.. oh and the infamous "light grey" ;-p
-
Its not metal, its drawn by hand.
-
I like the "tremulous forums" tihingy. Maybe a bit too much shine, but nice.
-
If you want to keep thumbs on what is being developed for the forums and whatnot, or read about what i wanted to achieve, you can do so at my wiki:
http://wiki.paradoxdgn.com/wiki/Tremulous_forums_beautification
-
Surprise!
Other 2 still remain as an option, but I had 20 spare minutes and this one caught my eye.
Khalsa
Edit: Whoops seems like the only way I could reset people from Abagail to the new one is to reset EVERYONE to the new one. My apologies to those people who prefer the Core theme (all 20 of you) you will have to rechoose that one once again.
-
wait what? It seems the same to me...
Modification: Nevermind.
Modification of modification: this new theme seems better but the icons are bad and it is still too bright.
-
Thanks, I am content with the new one now. :)
I have a Windows logo on my profile, how cool is that? o:
-
It was ok, but there was to profile button to access my profile info. I had to click my name in a post to ge to where I wanted to go. So, I switched back to default.
-
It is under Quick links now.
Khalsa
-
Yeah, I had to click my screenname to change it too.
old forum theme +1
...
i mean the one before the old.
Indeed.
That's part of what got me. The Trem forums are supposed to be blue. Or at least have blue in them.
Not red and grey.
-
As of right now, the forums are pure sex. I love the boosted/non-boosted icon for indicating new posts in sections, and the Tremulous Forums banner rocks. Pure ownage at this moment.
-
Yay Superpie's icons got used! (These are his right?)
-

Same, and I also liked the "Show unread posts since last visit" feature.
-
Darker.
-

Also under the Quicklinks dropdown - Under miscelaneous.
khalsa
-
Logged in from another box than yesterday and noticed the new default theme. It's light, readable and has a small font.
Good job.
-
Also under the Quicklinks dropdown - Under miscelaneous.
it's just one click slower than... eeeeeeeer... than being quick.
-
It is under Quick links now.
Khalsa
Quick links doesn't do anything for me. Literally. Maybe it has to do with my browser, I don't know, but since it doesn't work for me, using SMF default is still more convenient.
-
Which browser do you use?
I have tested it in:
Opera 9.5x - Windows Xp and Ubuntu
Firefox 2 - Windows XP and Ubuntu
Firefox 3 - Windows XP and Ubuntu
IE 6 - Windows Xp and Ubuntu (ie4wine)
IE 7 - Windows Vista
and all worked beautifully. I have recieved reports it doesn't work in Google Chrome, but frankly I dont care ;)
Khalsa
-
Your not alone there equi.
-
Safari (Mac default). I know a lot of people hate it. I don't care. I am used to it and like it. I DLed firefox a while ago but still like Safari better.
-
On Windows XP SP3 it works in Firefox 3.0.3
In Google Chrome 0.2.149.30 the drop down links at the top don't work.
-
Why is "Unread Posts" hidden in a sub-menu? When I log on the first thing is to go to read unread posts. It is a primary link/function and as thus should appear on top level.
-
If it doesn't work in Safari, than frankly, you are probably just screwed. Just use firefox. :)
P.S. I think the new topic and post reply buttons switched places from old one? This is the second time I've tried to reply and accidentally hit new topic. :/
-

I will look into this as soon as I get a little time. I do aim to support Safari.
Khalsa

No thanks. I like Safari more than the need to use the new forum theme.
-
now the 'unread posts' doesn't show the unread replies, like it did before.
so it requires the using of both buttons, what are already hidden a click away from the casual past ::)
-
It is under Quick links now.
Khalsa

it's your browser. what kinda shitty browser are you on, anyhow? use firefox -.-

Do you have ADD? Read the rest of the thread.

The functionality of those links has not changed (the links are the same).

I can confirm the broken state of the Quick Links button, and I don't use a crappy browser, since I don't use FireFox. In fact, I am using Chrome at the moment.

lolol It's funny because first you say you are not using a crappy browser, then you say you are using an early beta of a browser with tons of reported java and javascript problems! (Google chrome will not be supported untill they do a proper release - however I *will* fix the problems in safari, most likely today).

You sure he isn't being sarcastic? :)
-
You sure he isn't being sarcastic? :)
you can be sure that Khalsa is sarcastic also, since we are using an early beta of a website that now suddenly fucks up the good elements of the old one and quickly experimenting on us, while the "real" new site will probably turn the whole stuff upside down again, and all the debate can start again.
it like if instead of experimenting on MGdev servers, the developement process would change the master server every time they want to see if something works.
-
I found this one by following
teh the electrodretch
http://www.webtechnica.net/demoforum/index.php?theme=30
Less clean but still it's easy to read content. And its much more tremulousish
edit:
download http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=738

First beta and already it beats FireFox!

The last good release of Firefox was 1.5.
Anyone who doesn't see this is suffering from fanboy-ism.
-
Overall it is getting nicer, but one thing, i do want a snadwhich, but could that not link to http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php? please?

Thanks for they speedy fix! :)

I want the old (http://web.archive.org/web/20010424111926/http://tremulous.sourceforge.net/phpBB/) theme!

I rather like that one. Seriously.
-
You guys can select the one of your liking in Profile > Look and Layout preferences > Current theme (*Theme link*)
It is above everything else and is in very small writing so look for it carefully. Good Luck :D
-
Zero, click the link. I made a funny.
-
Can we get the Tremulous forums banner without the background? I want to advertise on my site and I am sure other webmasters would like the same. Plus it would look great on a wallpaper.. so many opportunities!
-
The current one is definitely sexier . In general, I think lighter colours suit better than dark ones (clan forums can be an exception) .
-
So when are we going back to default?
-
You can choose it anytime. >_>

Konqueror, KDE 4.1.2
works fine

Sorry if this was answered above, but I would swear Khalsa said the forum worked OK with Safari. Before the inevitable browser-preference flamewar ensues, I would like to briefly note that neither the SEARCH feature nor the QUICK LINKS drop-down seem to work in Safari, yet function quite nicely in Firefox. On my machine Safari seems much faster and smoother, and Firefox seems just a tiny bit slower and clunkier. I upgraded to FF3.0.3 yesterday, which may be a little better, we'll see.
Anyway, next time you chide someone to SEARCH first, remember that they may not be able to, depending on browser compatability. As the Forum upgrade is a work in progress, I thought you guys might like to eventually address this admittedly minor issue. I can't really remember which browser you said was shite, and didn't care about supporting. If it was Safari, then please disregard.
You may now flame me relentlessly for using a Mac, using the default Mac browser, and not using the hardware, OS and/or browser that you personally consider to be "the shit".
Have a lovely Tremulous day, and thanks for all of the work put into revitalizing the website and the community of late. Cheers! 8)

I brought up Safari before and how some things didn't work. Khalsa said he'd work on that. I like Safari more than firefox too, btw. :)

Well, I'm using FF3 now. Still getting used to it. It's prettier than the last version. What the hell - it was free, right? Anyway, the forum website seems to work quite well with it. Upgrading was worth the five minutes and no dollars expended. I guess you have shoved me toward one of your preferred/supported browsers. Curse you for making me experience new things, oh Tremforum webmasters! :P :D

mhhmm just to let you know, google chrome, clicking on user's name in a thread does nothing.
-
another thing is on firefox 3 i cant see my cursor
-
That's completely unrelated to the forum's theme. You fail.
-
NM its fixed

I prefer the SMF Core. So simple and clean.
