Howdy,
I have received several requests recently to provide searchable public logs of the #tremulous and #tremulous-dev IRC channels.
Personally I see no issue to this, other than the world will just have further proof of our idiocy.
On the plus side, we can tell noobs to search the logs, as a fair amount of good support is given over these channels, and a lot good dev stuff happens in the dev channel.
Thoughts?

Public channels that anyone can join, full of possibly useful information? +1 on public logs.
-
What was going to hold the logs? A php script?
Sure. Perhaps even a LogBot, to do so automatically.
But we need to add something to the topic, its under freenode TOS

-1, Its a chat, IRC even - not a wiki chatboard.
-
irseek.com does it all for you, including telling people in the channel what's going on.
I vote -dev sure, but iffy on #trem. 99% of what happens in there is of topic anyway.
Maybe make #trem-toubleshooting (with a no-assholes rule) so people can get help without being told they're a retard, and then log that.
-
The 3 people who are willing to search through the mess of info-babble will appreciate this. The 97 people who "heard you say -blank- at -blank- about -blanky blank-" would also find this handy.
-
Sounds like a good idea. Yet another thing we can say to idiots who don't use Google...
-
I don't see why not.

wat

100% yes.
-
Seems about as useful as recording every day conversation in a public space.
-
-10, #tremulous is useless for that, and it sucks to have that crap on public archive. I second the idea of a #tremulous-help chat that could be logged.
-
I voted no because I also think that it's going to be used for annoying crap more often than anyone will use it for anything worthwhile. However this isn't a particuarly strong opinion and if it happens, so be it.
-
Also, you need to run it through a few seds to protect email addresses from spam harvesters. That's one of the main issues I see. Also you need to find a way to make sure everyone knows that it's publicly logged.
-
I don't think logging the IRC chat will do anything more than the Search function; which is be completely ignored most of the time.

especially that you have to search on forums and read instructions here to be aware of the opportunity.

Well, it would probably be mentioned in the chan topic / welcome message, and probably also mentioned where they link to the chan, so they'll find it fine.

You mean just like that 'Search' link which is present on every page on this forum? Because in that case, your argument is rather flawed.
To close this off, I rather not have the chat in #tremulous logged, since it does no serve any purpose. If there is information on IRC that is really that important for other people to read, then it's probably worth the forum thread one can create about it.
-
I would contest that on average, the people on IRC are a lot smarter and "web savvy" than those on the forums. (Especially if you ignore the people who only got on IRC via pjirc)
And there is a lot that is said in -dev that isn't said anywhere else, and is worth keeping for future reference.
-
Again, if what is said on IRC is that important, creating a thread about it should pose no problem. Therefore logging IRC is basically a waste of time.
