So, what is the opposite of 'live' IRC chat? Reading a log and replying to it?
-
The opposite is what we do most of the time, with 30+ minute delays between responses.
I often wake up and then reply to numerous things that happened overnight, then 5 or so hours later the Americans wake up and reply to me. Often this is when the "live" chat occurs, although sometimes it takes a while for me to notice.

Actually that might give the false impression of a 'live' technical support kind of thing.

Sounds much like PMs. Why not use ICQ/Jabber or whatever. They even have chat on demand!!111111 ;-P
I'm just waiting for someone to dig out Gopher for some more cuddly, heart warming retroness.

Emails! The first form of communication on the Internet!
-
Was it? It pre-dates the internet, but was that email really close enough to what we have now to count?
But anyway, its different to PM's as its public, and real time for those involved. They can ask me to do something while in a discussion about said topic with others. Also IRC gets checked before other things and is a much nicer way of chatting.
