Title: Amutrem Mapping
Post by: fleash eater on November 19, 2008, 12:46:19 am
i want to start up a group of slightly less skilled people and come up with a mapping contest like thing. you have 1 week to create the greatest masterpiece you can. i think that this experience will really help alot of mappers  improve in skill so i thought it would be a good thing to do. tell me what you think of this idea and thanks for reading

I'd be willing to enter the competition; I'm still fairly amateur, if you could even call it that...

Provided I can submit maps for FarCry, FarCry2 and Crysis, I'm in.

why would you, this website is tremulous.net and these are the tremulous forums. why would you post other maps here?

i would be happy to join, it is a bit intimidating trying to map your first map when theres all these brilliant maps out there. Not to mention the eternally harsh lava croft. So i think this is a good idea. But i agree with cactus, though i think it should be increased to 2 weeks (not too long, not too short).

Ill get a head start right now. And perhaps you should start recruiting a couple of judges?

alright well i would think of lava croft as a judge but then again, i dont want a simon judge =P. hmmmm alright im going to get this all together if you are willing to be a judge  post here within a week we will start this. and just be creative and try your best, its an amateur contest for a reason.

get more than one judge, lava would be fine, aslong as theres other judges.

oh yea i know 3-5 judges just trying to piss off lava for kicks  ::)
Title: Re: Amutrem Mapping

I think we should have 3 experiences judges, especially Lava who is uber-harsh but awesome at his criticism. And, we should have two other judges who are slightly less skilled.

OH YEAH, can I have partner for this if he is amateur at mapping like me?

Because making a decent map for these games can take one week.

Make any sort of playable map for Trem takes, at the very least, one month. That's why.

how do you find out if someone is 'amateur' or not?  and what are the motivations to do anything? :P

there motivations are praise publicity and sucsess of becoming better at mapping. also i can tell if there amateur by the work they've released. i think i might be a little over amateur so i might judge but i dont know.

Yes, its too late.  >:(
(jk, you got smurfted)
So, are you a mapper Smurftyous? If so, it'll be useful to list you down as a submitter, or it'll be best to submit all the contestants in a list..

*Hendrich just gave a big hint to fleash eater*

Nevermind, I am not going to have a partner.

You can tell I'm amateur by my one released map, dretchrange. (It's somewhere around here, I don't want to link to it).

I've made about 5 maps, but I've never released them.

I can't wait to get started on my map for this competition, once I know the deadlines. =D

whats your definitions of plagiarism is it "u can us one texture set and it can be like allready made maps like acts" because I'm think I'm going to make an acts like map with its textures and a more simple layout. would i get dq'ed for this?

LOL....anyways no plagiarism is when you take someone elses map. all textures have open rights for anyone o use from trem list, and ther eare other free ones too you can use.

*cough cough* http://www.leveldk.co.uk/speedmap.htm *cough cough*

Speed mapping for some games is around 1-2 hours, and most of those maps are very playable. In fact after the said contest most of the participant play all the maps one after the other just for fun. Although those are not tremulous map the idea remains the same.

The only difference in trem is you need to think before hand a lot more on ho you want the base layouts to be. It doesn't need to be fancy but usually it needs to be well made enough to allow building from both team without making them either gods or useless. There is no need for doors/pitfalls/effects of any kind, in fact there shouldn't be any in a speed map. Furthermore, as long as it looks good and is playable, I'm pretty certain it would be fine. I doubt that he's asking you to either do a procyon kind of map nor a pulse one either, something like uncreation/atcs is all thats needed.

Personally, 1-2 weeks is more then enough to make a map, albeit it wouldn't be much tested for gameplay, he's not asking for a masterpiece either. In fact I'm hoping most of you have played trem enough to know what a good kind of layout would be.

If I remember right the FC2 new mapping program allows to pretty much whip out a decent map in about 20-30 min, and its not really what we're talking about here anyway.

Whats simpler then atcs? 2 square rooms with a hallway in-between?

What PC/Mac spec will the map be played on? I have started mapping a new map and it is very detailed (imo lol) so I would like to know if performance would be judged?
Title: Re: Amutrem Mapping
Post by: Ingar on November 22, 2008, 04:23:55 pm
A very detailed map would probably have more than 15.000 brushes. Performance is largely dictated by layout and visibility, a poorly designed map wil run poorly, even on high-end systems. r_speeds can be used as an indicator. 10-15.000 should not be a problem for a rather detailed map. There's more to performance than just r_speeds but if they go very high in an undetailed area, you can be fairly certain you have a problem.

I might give it a shot. Toss me in with the other competitors. If I have time in between school projects and personal life, I'll slap something together.
