You'll have to start it from a command prompt

Wait what?  You mean i have to type somthing (which you did not say) in the black thing in windows, to then activate the terminal ( the blue thing on windows that used to pop up when I started trem before I installed that game killer tremfusion) and then some how finally enable the console ingame??

I think he (snb) is talking about the in-game console.

NO seriously now I'm going around in circles.  Yes I'm kinda talking about the in game console but the only way to access it now since tremfusion f'd up my tremulous is the terminal I guess and I can't access the console and the tremfusion people on the IRC are like "OK your terminal  is off" then i try to turn it on but no were on google does it say how. "the real thing is better" the whole reason I asked you guys was to get to THE REAL THING.  They offed little help and then they had the nerve to say "trem fusion is for 1337 people who know how to use a computer" "uninstall tremfusion." first off I cant uninstall it and still hope to play trem. I can only play on other servers if I have tremfusion, besides, tremfusion ate my other trem clients.

Tremfusion has a tendency to nuke all other clients due to it changing where stuff is saved (compatible my arse).
Your best bet is probably to wipe all traces of it and start from scratch.

You're probably looking to set/reset the cl_consolekeys cvar. Normally it'd be in autogen.cfg but because of that^ I don't know where it is for you.

sounds like hes talking about the old blue console that was around for windows before the sdl move. no new client has that no more instead you can open a command prompt and see/type the text in that.

about where stuff is saved. macs and linux hasn't changed i don't think. windows on the other hand there's 2 different paths tremfusions tried to just add the old path to the searchlist. i think mg hasn't changed their path. fsm-trem if i remember correctly has been reverted to local app data ( 1.1 i think ).

tremfusion is still cutting edge (lota changes being made). if you don't want some problems (like with all betas) don't use it use something else thats simple like mg client.

That's not what I'm talking about.  Moving the files was an SVN change (I think).
What I'm complaining about is how they rearranged autogen.cfg into a series of other files, and didn't bother to make it backwards compatible.  They deliberately broke compatibility for no reason what so ever.  I'm not saying the changes are bad, arguable its a (slight) improvement, its the way they didn't make it backwards compatible (which is what, 2 lines of code?) for no reason I can see other than some lame attempt at "vendor lock-in", something everyone said they were going to do, and they promised to never do.
They lied to our faces, broke there promises two minutes later, and now we have to help the people who's clients got fucked.

fs_homepath in windows was under C:\Program Files in 1.1
It was docs and settings/local settings/app data/tremulous in tjw's client
It became docs and settings/app data/tremulous in svn slightly later

Anyway, all that is irrelevant to what snb is actually looking for.

IOQ3 Readme says
Quote
On many international layouts the default console toggle keys are also dead
keys, meaning that dropping the console potentially results in
unintentionally initiating the keying of a dead key. Futhermore SDL 1.2's
dead key support is broken by design and Q3 doesn't support non-ASCII text
entry, so the chances are you won't get the correct character anyway.

If you use such a keyboard layout, you can set the cvar cl_consoleKeys. This
is a space delimited list of key names that will toggle the console. The key
  names are the usual Q3 names e.g. "~", "`", "c", "BACKSPACE", "PAUSE",
"WINDOWS" etc. It's also possible to use ASCII characters, by hexadecimal
number. Some example values for cl_consoleKeys:

    "~ ` 0x7e 0x60"           Toggle on ~ or ` (the default)
"WINDOWS"                 Toggle on the Windows key
"c"                       Toggle on the c key
    "0x43"                    Toggle on the C character (Shift-c)
"PAUSE F1 PGUP"           Toggle on the Pause, F1 or Page Up keys

Note that when you elect a set of console keys or characters, they cannot
then be used for binding, nor will they generate characters when entering
text. Also, in addition to the nominated console keys, Shift-ESC is hard
coded to always toggle the console.

Particularly, use this:
Quote
Also, in addition to the nominated console keys, Shift-ESC is hard coded to always toggle the console.
to fix cl_consolekeys (and set it using the info above)

We can't help you if you can't clearly tell us what your problem is. Yea so just follow lak's advice, it should work.

Will be fixed in next release (this weekend if nothing goes wrong)
