(I haven't noticed how you can make a poll so I'm writing it down.)
So, there's a newbie who wants to learn by playing with the big boys, goes to a server and joins a team. You're an experienced player in a team of decent players. What should the newb do?
Multiple choices possible, this may be a grey area not a black and white issue. Explanations/rationalization welcome, in fact I'd appreciate answers in words rather than just a #.
1. Get the hell out of my server. He can spectate but that's it.
2. I'd prefer he camped in the base and defend/repair rather then feed.
3. He should go out to earn weapon/armor/evo's, but carefully. Don't stray too far, move with a group not alone, don't get cocky. A reasonable amount of feed is unavoidable but fall back to #2 if the ratio to kills goes too low.
4. He should go out and PLAY. I don't care if he feeds as long as he seems to be using his head, learning as he goes and is not a complete idiot. We're here to have fun.
(I'm not touching the subject of building because it's common knowledge that newbs should not be building, period.)

4. If that person is learning then I don't care. As long as they learn something I'm fine with having to pick up whatever slack is left. I generally try to teach newbies instead of using a GTFO bind. It doesn't really help the server because there's always another newbie, and I'm not helping the person. If I try to explain to them the mistakes they are making they may, or may not, learn something and become a competent player quicker. Then if I'm really lucky they will teach another newbie something and start the process all over again. It can be more stressful on me but it's worth it in my opinion.

this is almost worth its own sticky. people who are willing to teach (and on occasion people willing to learn) are far too rare.

i've seen a fair few noobs who say they're new, these are the few that aren't totally egotistical and at least know how to talk. i help them out whenever i can.

Usually I would support #3 if it was some sort of public scrim game, but the point of Tremulous is #4. If newbies aren't here just to have fun on a free, open source game, then whats the point? Usually other players would kick/swear/taunt/etc the newbies for just being plain new, and thats not what Tremulous is all about.
I would try to help the newbie out, because we all were newbies before, but back then atleast I wasn't made fun as much as its going on today, but that doesn't mean I didn't see poor newbies being back-sassed for just trying to learn the frigging game.

I was one of the newbies who said "I'm a newbie. Can I join?".
A guy responded with "This is how we welcome newcomers" or something very close. This was the last thing I saw before I was kicked. Had I gone out and fed, I probably would have received a better welcome.
Personally though, I'd say #2 as humans #3 as aliens, there's always a need for repair and base defense on the human side. This will also allow the newbie to gain some cash and try out some of the upgrades.

I don't know how we are supposed to recruit new players with folks kicking them. I think a noob's first impression shouldn't be a bad one. I am a relatively new Tremulous player (tho not new FPS by an means). I have been reading all over this forum & others, doing as much 'homework' as I can to learn & improve. Veterans are the game's past, noobs, the future. You don't have much without both being friendly.
Looking at the #'s either 2 or 3, as long as you are having fun. The learning curve is much lower as a human, being easier to relate to. Wallwalking is quite disorienting to the uninitiated.
The toughest thing to get across to noobs/ newbs is that COMMUNICATION & TEAMWORK wins, a group of individuals trying to get as many kills possible doesn't.
Which is the noob server again? I'd like to learn, help and grow the Tremulous community. SERIOUSLY.

The server for newbies is "Wrath Newbie Training Server".
The server for noobs is "Banned to Burn in Hell Server".

I would say number 4. It's about priorities, which is more important, a new player deciding to stick with Tremulous, or you possibly winning one 15 min pub game?
And also there's the fact that I feed like crazy too. ;)

If I may play the devil's advocate for a moment; I know I opened this topic and I hope any Trem newbie that reads it may find it useful. So imagining the opposite side may contribute as well.
The answer to moose's question may seem obvious, it's The Right Thing to do... until you recall that sometimes when you're in the middle of a game and someone or something bothers you, you tend to lash out. I don't know about others but I certainly hope they still play Trem with enough passion that this kind of thing still happens at least occasionally. It's a natural reaction.
At the beginning of a game when I go out naked as a human and get killed, I go "damn". I feed a few more times until I manage to get some armor and a shotgun and every time I go "damn it!" Then as the game advances you get so caught in it that sometimes it's hard to contain the feelings.
If it's a particularly sensitive moment (base under rush or 30 seconds to SD) and a noob decides it would be a great moment to fire at a turret or decon something... I know I would at least scream "you bloody stupid idiot!" at the screen. Usually I follow with broadcasting "DON'T DO THAT" and I understand at the logical level that he's probably new, bored, in a game whose subtleties he doesn't understand, and most likely has no idea he's doing something deeply frustrating.
But at the emotional level, and things are hectic, you're high on adrenaline, and if you're an admin... for some people it may be very easy to just kick him on impulse.
I heard that Trem has the ability to freeze a game. It would be a wonderful opportunity for such a situation. Freeze everything, say what happened, tell the person what they did wrong, warn them, undo the damage etc. Then, if they persist, kick them. I've seen servers where admins do such things behind the scene and from a player's point of view it was wonderful, the bad thing was reverted in a matter of seconds, the newbie was told off and hopefully understood he did a wrong thing.

You realize Tremulous is a game, right? You're not supposed to get emotionally attached to it, especially considering you'll have to start over the next match anyway.
Newbies are always better than people who take the game too seriously.
-
Of course I realize. :) But if you get passionate about something there's gonna be a reaction when someone breaks your toys. Like I said, natural, can't help it.
Anyway, I'm hoping this will help newbies not be put off even if they do get kicked. There's an explanation, shouldn't be taken personally.
For example, I was kicked earlier today in the middle of a match. Default human base on Transit, S3, SD, aliens sniping from all over the place. Credits were low so I got a jetpack and was repairing a turret. Out of the blue I get kicked for 12 hours. I'm not sure why. I can only imagine I must have deconned it by mistake and the server had automatic kick during SD, because it was so sudden. So, it happens. And no, I didn't scream or anything, :) just shrugged and went to another server.

admin... kick him on impulse
Those two things should never, ever come together. Also, about the ability to freeze the game; there's an admin command called !pause that freezes the game in its tracks, while still allowing people to talk and admins to carry out their work. Then to continue the game, the admin would just !unpause.

Eh, I don't get mad too often in trem. I only get mad when I am performing way below my expectations of myself. I am focused on bettering myself in trem, as long as I play well, learn something new, or teach some newbie something I'm satisfied. One of the few things that does make me mad are players who spam "PWNED" or "NOOOOOOOOOOOB" binds whenever they are killed or kill someone. So, I usually take my time to explain to newbies what mistakes they have made.

Oh, so all those people at football or soccer games... They are "not emotionally attached"?

But notyou'll have to start over the next match anyway.
since in competitive sports, winning and losing effects your ranking and, depending on the sport and league, possibly also pay. That said, most fans are stupid anyway.

My first post on trem community speaking of n00bs >< ok that's it :P Sorry for poor english
I suppose all of us play trem for fun. A n00b if not aided can ruin fun to several players. Taking the game too seriously and putting emotions in it isn't the same thing: I've seen hundreds of good games end in a 30 second rush when the newcomer decon reac; the only thing i can say is: aw :( and feel spoiled.
On my opinion, newbie should SPEC for a while, just a couple of games. Newbies SHOULD NOT build, ok, but a lucynab can blow ur base in the time he charge it to full shot. I cant say what number is right in the options, the only thing i know is: there's people that, in front of the error, admit it and learn. Others that can say only 'Shut up bitch' when u ask'em to not nade ur base. It isn't of being n00b or being pro, the problem is that kindness between people is very rare. With kindness, i don't care if that nab feeds: my penis didn't shortens for having lost a game. If kindness lack, also doing nothing than speak is a good reason for kick.
