Every time I connect to the AKKA server, I get the message "You are banned from this server". I find this peculiar, considering that I have never played there. This is disappointing, since I have heard a lot of good things about that server, and have a good ping to it. Do I need a password, or registration or something?
How does banning work there anyway? Is it by username or IP?
-
Well I am too, but I know why. Someone on my connection.
I'm banned from 2 servers because he thinks its funny to decon. If another person on your connection is IP banned, so are you.
-
Or perhaps another person in your IP range got banned, so you are banned as well.
-
The problem is resolved now. I contacted the server administrators on #akka-admins at irc.quakenet.org. It turns out my IP is in the same range as a banned player. They were kind enough to "un-ban" my IP.
Is banning IP ranges a good idea as opposed to banning a single specific IP?
-
Its the only way they can ensure that player cant get back on the server, and single ips are easily enough allowed as you can see, so probably yes

As a postscript, I'll just say that after a playing several enjoyable games, I got banned for a legitimate reason. Someone asked me to kill the overmind in order to move it, so I attacked it with my adv. marauder, not knowing the consequences. There was about half a second between the warning message and me being disconnected and banned. So, it was fun while it lasted. Should I plead my case to some admin that I was actually trying to help my team?

Just avoid the AKKA server in the future. It is a good idea to avoid servers with a broken configuration like their autoban :o

Yea, whatever.
Autobans are only for an hour and no one's going to ostracize you for getting one. Just use builders for deconstruction on AKKA.

I've been kicked for hitting a tesla when I was shooting at a goon. With the pulse rifle, the first shot doesn't get to the target (or to something in the way) until you've expended nearly all of your clip. One misstep and you're booted from the game. And it's probably S3 when it gets really hectic, so humans damaging their own base becomes a problem. They shouldn't, but kicking them when they do seems like bad form. It might be more worth it to kill some tyrants chomping at your turrets by blowing up the turrets too (lucifer or flamer, most likely), but then the people who did it get kicked. Doesn't seem to do what it's supposed to.

hey, i'v been kicked from akka for REPAIRING a turret :) their autoban script is screwed big time

autoban = > 600 dmg to any structures or < -5 score
meaning, auto-ban doesn't just happen if you're tking structures:
1. Do 600 dmg combined to structures on your team.
2. Recieve a -5 score.
3. If you jump off into voids and DIE your team will recieve -1 towards their evolution points, and since it is hurting your team it's considered tking and it will eventually ban you for doing it.
-
I cant see ANY way i could of got -1 or ANY damage to a structure with ckit.
-
i also got banned from the same server. i'm not sure why i was banned. i play decently. i don't attack other players, cause any nuisance. i got banned after an alien attacked the base and was damaging our armory. it was on top of the armory and i was shooting at it. i think they mistakenly thought i was shooting at the armory and destroyed it.
-
Thats why i like servers that leave an admin in charge.
-
Well, if ya have a problem, let us ( the [AKKA] admins ) know about it.
Forum threads really dont fix much ;).
As far as the autoban goes, I hardly see how it is ''broken.'' But then again, it's not my problem in the first place. If anything, it should teach you what *not* to do in the future. Regardless of your opinion/perspective, something was done to kickstart the autoban, so..

Don't carelessly shoot/fire/spam/whatever in the base? Again, it's not like the Autoban God reached down and arbitrarily picked you - something was done for it to happen. If you like being able to kill your own turrets to kill incoming aliens, I can only really say that [AKKA] is not for you.
To the autoban by eating the Overmind: No, I wouldnt plead those cases. If those happen, just play on another server for an hour, and come back.
