Self-Destruction
« on: December 30, 2008, 01:35:16 am »
I mean self-destruction as in:
If humans are losing horribly to the Aliens and only the last generator is present, a human can choose to vote[team vote] for a self-destruct of the generator. It would explode within 6 seconds of the result of vote[if accepted] and kill all aliens within 3/4 of the map. If the OM/alien structure(s) are/is present, they go with it.

If all structures are destroyed with the blast, the death count of the aliens adds to the humans' score, which would help. This would go the same for the OM if aliens are losing.

Hi.
Admit defeat when you have to do it is one thing we all shoud learn.
In short : Do not want, sorry. :)

Why ?
- Complicate to do (except if you do something like the NUKE GRENADE of the MAXmoroned servers).
- When something explose and you are near, you explose too. :D
- Too easy end. And that don't make people learn how to destroy a base (And a lot of players need it).

Some ideas are interesting, and some seem boring. Some are innovative and some are under rated. But some ideas are just plain retarded, and I think this is a perfect example of such.

Imagine this. I'm with my alien buddies and for the past 2 hours we grinded the game and played our best, and after the humans camped, taunted, and killed many of us, we finally managed to drive them into the hole they deserve to rot in. Victory is close to our grasp, then all of a sudden- BOOM! A giant explosion ripples on my screen, momentarily decreasing my FPS to 2, then all of a sudden its a tie. Thats it, thats basically the game. They call us noobs, they  all laugh and leave. Now wheres the friggin' justice in that?

What about the aliens, do they get an exploding OM?

Second problem is- how large will this explosion be? Will it be a flurry of red and yellow textures bulging on my screen, or will it a small fire that shows a huge explosion radius?

Next, is how the explosion can kill all the aliens. Sometimes the aliens would move their bases closer to the humans too get an advantage, or they re-built their base somewhere away from their old base. The explosion takes up 3/4 of the map, and if the base is close to the radius, bye bye grangers. Same thing goes for custom layouts.

Also, 3/4 of the whole map? Not every map is the same size, some maps are extremely small like "alien", and some are huge like "Watah". For that to work either the admin has to make a layout to decide how huge the explosion should be or the guy making the map should. And besides, why should they? If the OM or the "generator" (Or as we normally call it, the Reactor, read the manual or gtfo) moves to a different location, then the set layout of the explosion was useless. Also, what about servers that allows the building of more then one reactor?

Also, somebody has to code this, and people like Amanieu or the Trem devs would rather carry cinder bricks on their back then code something that is virtually useless. Why? Because if the aliens are going to kill the humans- why not let them? The explosion and the humans end either way- being that the humans die. But with the explosion, it causes alot more problems and balance issues. If someone is willing to code this, they'll have to keep a few things in mind. This idea seems suitable for a Qvm, so they'll just have to make a callvote function, tell tremulous to use the exploding texture from the grenade, either multiply the size of the texture by 100x (unlikely), or re use that same texture 100x all over the map. Compile it, test it, then put it on a server.

Every human has his/her own separate score, so who will get those "kills"? Maybe the Reactor, because it was the only structure that didn't fail as much as the humans did. That doesn't make sense? Neither does this idea.

In conclusion, this idea sounds like its made by a guy who can't take defeat graciously and wants to screw the aliens for the last time. Just like Colynn' said, defeat is something the player him/herself has to learn to take maturely. If you thought I was throwing bricks at you and calling you stupid, no, you're not. Thing is, this idea was doomed from the start, and hopefully you know why it would never work. It would totally unbalance gameplay, and nobody wants that to happen. I suggest you talk to Spectator and maybe he'll implement this feature into the [X] server if you want this idea to get off the ground. Cheers.  :)

/callteamvote admitdefeat
Very underrated command there. On the servers I play on, people are too lazy to even do /teamvote no. Anyway, let's say /callteamvote spoiledsport passes. Hummie base nukes. Alien base nukes. Lots of area nukes. Since most people are near rc or in that nuked area, they die. You will get a few humans with half-empty guns and a lot of aliens that now is a good time to become rants and pwnzor the humans. All they have to do is not die while the humans waste their ammo, as humans can't reload w/o arm or at least repeater or rc. So, humans lose. The above command is a much-condensed version of that.

Roanoke: Without Overmind, you can't go rant ;)

Virux: I have a binding for nading the human base, but I surely won't post it here  ;) however, I agree with Hendrich: There is already somthing like "/callteamvote admitdefeat", so I don't see the point. Only because you want to deny the other team the pleasures of a well earned victory, you wanna NUKE'em ???

PS: Do you know "extreme sudden death", where the spawns self-destruct? This is one of the most annoying things I ever experienced, and I do not play on servers that have it.

I have retired from Tremulous. Definetely. If you play a game just because it has become a habit, but u'r only feeling like a kindergarten teacher - well, maybe I am just getting too old (hell, I was a teenager when DukeNukem3D was *new*) - it's probably not a bad idea to just let it be. And I do.

Don't take this personally. Have fun, guys.

Fine. You've got goons. In any case, this fails.
