Ubuntu Error?
« on: April 05, 2010, 08:05:18 pm »
Okay, so my original Tremulous version is WAY outdated. So I went to get the newest version I could find (Tremulous 1.2 Beta). I downloaded the package and opened up my terminal so I could actually install it to my computer. But, I keep getting errors.
This is what I enter:

apt-get install will try to pull that package from the ubuntu repositories where it doesn't exist.

The gpp installation is like those ancient windows installers, where you download the thing and then have to start it to perform the installation. So type /bin/sh 'tremulous-gpp1-installer{2}.run' and it should run the installer.

However, gpp will only work if you already have an install of 1.1.  If you installed 1.1 via apt, then it won't work as ubuntu hides all the files all over the place.  Easiest way is to bin the apt version and install it via the version on here.

You're stuck there?.. If I'm right.

Continue with the installation. You could stay with the default options. And it should be fine and install. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
And be sure you have the Linux installer: http://tremulous.net/files/

Or here are some steps.

Step 1:
Download the Linux installer: http://tremulous.net/files/
version 1.1.0

Step 1 1/2:
Once it's downloaded
Right click on the file, and make sure it's executable: http://ma65p.wordpress.com/2008/08/04/how-to-make-a-file-executable-in-ubuntu/

Step 2:
Open the terminal

Step 3:
cd into the directory that you downloaded the Linux installer to. It might be your Desktop.
Try this in the terminal: cd ~/Desktop

Step 4:
In the terminal type:
sudo ./tremulous-1.1.0-installer.x86.run
It will ask you for your password. Just enter it

Step 5:
Go through the steps in the installer. And select OK. Accept License, and so on.

Step 6:
Test the install of Tremulous, go to Applications/Games/Tremulous, or wherever else it installed it to.

If it works, continue the next steps.

Step 7:
Go download the Linux installer for 1.2: http://tremulous.net/files/
It should be named: tremulous-gpp1-installer.x86.run

Repeat the steps 1-6, and rinse.  ;) (Kidding about the rinse... just in case you don't know)

Of course for Step 4, use the 1.2 file name, not the 1.1.0, it looks like this: tremulous-gpp1-installer.x86.run

Hope that helps

Lol...

So my guess is it started, asked where to install it to, and it installed it to it's current directory. Which was the Desktop.
I'm at work, so I can't go through the steps. Someone else will need to help you, for now.

@other people

Where would he point the installer to?

Nice, thank you. Now I know where to install it to, as well.

Question: With the installer from this site, and the various packaged binaries(RPM, DEB, etc).
Do they install to a common location, or does it differ?

Um, it usually goes to the desktop, but sometimes it differs to random places.

Every distro does it randomly in odd locations.

The installers from the website put it in /usr/local/games/tremulous.

The gpp installer can happily put it wherever your distro put it, as long as you know where that was.

Why bother with this? Why not just use the .zip files and create custom desktop shortcuts?

If you type "/fs_basepath" in the in-game console (since you have a working 1.1 installation), that gives you the location tremulous was installed in, no matter who installed it, or what OS you installed it on. Then you simply need to give that path to the gpp installer.

The icon on your desktop that you want to try clicking on is tremulous-gpp.x86 or tremulous-gpp.x86_64. Run that and if it doesn't work tell us what the console says.

Ah ok, Good to know thank you.

More good info. :o
