very bad ping at night (remember that now)

so im playing on beer garden with a modest 101 ping, my normal ping. now this is during the day.

but at night VERY bad things happen. huge lag spikes, 600+ ping and all that. and this is for every single server; AKKA, beer garden, tjw, SST, etc.


what in the world is going on. no dl's in progress, live in canada west coast. the ping usually starts spiking up at around 8:00 pm pst.

o yes and my rate is set at 20k.

Well. Exit the game. then do random pings. Compare these pings with the day ping to the exact same server. If the ping has nothing to do with the game will affect other server.  

Example: If you are connecting to a brasil server, ping a few brasil web server at 2:00PM and at 11:00PM.

Maybe you connection is crap, maybe you have spyware, maybe your conexion is shared with a intruder (is wifi?).  If your router is wifi, and is downloading stuff even with all your computers off, try to activate the passwored wifi protocols, or change to ethernet that is much more reliable than wifi.

i have pinged a few servers at these times:


SST: 4:00 PM. Ping is 90-145

AKKA: 6:00 PM. Ping is 100-180

tjw: 9:00 PM. Ping is 200-800

This info doesnt give many clues about your connection. You could get more out of the pings if you compare pings to all the above servers at various times of day.
However, it does look as if your connection "turns bad" at night. If you are sharing your dial-up with someone else (any family members who use your connection at night?), then it is likely that this is the cause of your problem. And if you do not share your connection with anyone, then it is likely that your internet service provider is bad. Some cheap ISPs offer bad bandwidth/latency douring peak times.

20k?..... you set your connection to 20k?.... I hope not.
But either way Belier might have something there... either your on one of those dreaded shared connections (ISPS divy up connections by neighborhood sometimes.. uch) and someone is going nuts, someone is on your wireless, or your in a dorm and someone loves some nighttime while they sleep downloading..

If this goes on for a week or two you might want to call your ISP up because this is probably their problem..
Also you might want to see what programs are running on your comp at night.. sometimes some programs wait until night to do updates. Try using some program like end-it-all (which isn't free anymore so find something LIKE it) that can kill non essential proccesses, or go through task manager and kill some stuff that you know its safe to kill,shut down all the programs you can, and see if you can get your ping down.

Anyway Its safer to ping some webserver, maybe SST is bussy at night.

Perhaps night to you is peak time for the server?

Actually when you go on the server does everyone get bad pings, or only you?

It doesn't matter what timezone the server is in, (apart from low pings caused by being a long way from a server) as I'm guessing the majority of clients will be from certain timezones, hence the peak time for most servers will normally be the same. :wink:

I don't think that's actually the problem though.

Perhaps your ISP throttles bandwidth at night because "surely no one is up that late"  :roll:
