How to build
« on: October 06, 2010, 05:20:55 am »
As we all know-the building aspect of tremulous is crucial to a team's victory. Many people, especially newcomers, don't know exactly how to build correctly. Since bad building can severely hurt a team, or cause them to lose, here are some tips on how to build.

Aliens:
1. Since humans have long range weapons, never build structures where they are visible from an opening. An egg, acid tube, etc. in plain sight is as good as dead
2. The Overmind is the power source of the aliens-so make sure it is in a safe place preferably protected by barricades and elevated off the ground
3. When at stage 2, make sure eggs are moved to ceiling and tubes onto the walls or ceiling-any structures on ground can easily be destroyed by grenades. it's also important that you build a booster in a corner(the booster can not be built on a wall or ceiling)
4. Trappers are very good but are tough to place because they are easily killed. its best to have them hidden

Humans:
1. The Reactor is just like the Overmind of the aliens-it's the power source and it too must be protected. With humans there are no barricades so the reactor is more open to attack-still, be sure to have it placed in a safe spot.
2. Machine gun turrets are your main defense for stage 1 and stage 2, and since aliens have no long range attack until stage 2, it's ok to build them more openly. *But build them elevated if you can* an experienced player can take one down easily
3. Make sure there are at least two telenodes. this will make spawning faster.
4. The armory is key because it is needed to get weapons and armor. *Build it in a corner or at least next to a wall*
5. Once aliens reach stage 2, adv. dragoons can snipe with barbs and adv. marauders can zap structures. Building for this really can depend on the map that you're on so in this case, just make sure you have good defenders and try to just heal structures while a seasoned player builds. Two adv. dragoon barbs can take out a turret or tesla (defensive structure at stage 3) so try and build them more hidden when aliens are stage 2.

Forward bases:
A forward base is a repeater(humans) or egg(aliens) built outside of base closer to the enemy so team members don't have to go all the way back to heal or get ammo/poison. Never build a forward unless you are on the attack and your teammates want one.

One last word of advice-if an experienced player is building, let them, this is only a basic outline of building and they will surely know more than you. Don't feel saddened if your building rights get taken away for that round, it happens to many people and it's only for the good of the team. I sometimes take away peoples building rights but it doesn't mean i have anything against them. Happy building!

This is some of the most vague advice I have ever seen.

"Try not to let your buildings get killed, make sure they are well placed or something maybe have a good defender."

this is supposed to just be a basic outline of building for beginners. if anyone has questions about building im happy to answer them. i could write a building manual but it would be too much information for a beginner

No, it would not be too much information if it is well written. If someone can't be bothered to spend 10 to 20 minutes reading a manual once, they won't bother taking a few minutes every game to build a good base.
Besides this the original post contains so much common sense written in a nonsensical way that it insults the reader and disvalues the statement it is trying to make. Have a look at some of the stickies to see people trying to and succeeding in giving good information in a good way.

It's common sense. The reason many people build like that is because they lack it. Also it's a sure bet that people like that will never read the forums for tips so this is pretty much pointless.

Don't cuss like that when you're trying to make a point, it makes you look immature and unintelligent.

About your guide, some of the things you say could easily confuse/be misinterpreted by new builders. When you say "hide" buildings, this suggests that they should be somewhere that they would not interact with the enemies. You should instead have explained how the various defensive structures work, and given examples of good locations. :police:

Way to go man. If this is your typical level of conversation then noone will bother listening to you. As for me not knowing what I'm on about, probably a grain of truth with the GPP since I'm waiting for 1.2 full. But I'm wise enough to have the 1.1 guide topics replaced by pieces written by people who have more experience with the GPP these days.
Beginners seem to always build in plain sight, and trappers and hives on the ground because they do not know how those function. Once they know how they function, it's common sense. Yet how they function isn't something which you even bother to explain. It's like telling someone to round a corner by steering the wheel, not explaining that he needs to do the common sense motion of pushing down the gaspedal to move forward.

ok fine ill write a 20 page building manual, ive had a lot of experience in almost every US server map. i can create a guide thats even helpful to more experienced players that still need advice-this seems too vague for everyone.
