Windows XP unfortunatly.

But only cause;

1) My modem is a bugger to set up on Linux.
2) Its a shared computer so I cant really tinker with it without being shouted at.

But all that will change in about 5 months time  :D  :D  :D .

Ubuntu here I come!

I play it on Debian (Testing) Etch and Ubuntu Dapper Drake. It's nice to have more native Linux games!

Yeah, I use windows as well.

Mine is also a shared computer, but the main reason I haven't switched is because most of my games and most of my programs aren't compatible with linux or whatever you want to call it.

Windows... but just because I am a game addict... ;)

I love gentoo, but cedega sadly is a piece of s**t. They do some great stuff but performance is usually bad and you have to pay every single month.

Now, pay 85€ once and you got your WinXP home license, can use alot of stuff from sourceforge as well and play any games you want...
Was it not for gaming I would be running just a gentoo box at home, have no other choice than Windows at work and just use linux on some servers.

Take the best of all worlds, I say. I would even love to have a Mac to play around a bit... ;)

actually i saw tremulous on sourceforge. ubuntu is just a popular distro, and when it came time to reformat my f'ed up fc2 partition, i had narrowed things down to gentoo (i decided against it because of lack of cpu/ram), debian (i was turned off by the age of some of the packages), and ubuntu. i may try debian in the future, but i am extremely happy with ubuntu..
edit: one thing that should bring in a lot of people is tremulous making it into debian unstable and ubuntu edgy, though unfortunately it is stuck in the non-free repositories.

Re: Window isn't shit.

It's not shit in the first several months, but as virii, spyware, etc. pile on, it gets there. Then you have to reformat. And yeah, blah, blah, if  you're an expert with windows you can do blah blah, and put your stuff on separate partition, and make a backup of your registry, blah, blah, only takes a day to fix it, blah, blah. Linux. And yes, I know, that if you're in a very air-tight situation, then Windows can be very stable and good.

However, I do think that once Linux has games, Windows has nothing over Linux.

Also on Ubuntu Dapper Drake (for months now, was on testing).

No. If you are not surfing the net blindly, use a router and decent antivirussoftware, you don't have these problems.
Any software is just as safe as the person using it is able to keep it safe. If GNU/Linux was as spread on desktops as Windows is, there would be as many Viruses for GNU/Linux as there are for Win as there would be as many Scriptkiddies at work on that platform.

Just running anything different from mainstream is not making it safe, just more unlikely to be hacked.

Oh and BTW, I only reinstall when getting new hardware. My last Windows 2000 installation survived a bit more than three years without being infected once. Just stay aways from pr0n, h4cks, s3rialz and such, easy as this.

Windows CAN be very stable, IF you knwo what you are doing. I used to have it runing very nicley, but it took many (hundreds?) or hours each time i reformated (approx each year).
had to change thouseds of settings, install new shells, edit protected system files etc.

I was a Windows 2000 user. And I whas happy. But then my DNS client break, and I was unable to fix it. The only solution whas to reinstall Windows. But that options seems loong with Windows2000, because theres like 4 service packs, and whatnot patchs. I tried Linux, and I am now a happy linux user. Of course, some of my games now not work (HL2 and BF2) but I have found others that work ( webgames, Tremulous, etc ). I can switch back to Windows, and some of my friends ask me to do that (to play Dungeon and Dragons online and meet there ) but nowdays Windows seems less friendly everyday. I have trid the WGA think on some computers at work (trough VMWARE) and is a horrible hell I want to stay away.
And now the DirectX 10 is a Vista only thing. So some newer games will need Vista. And Vista seems a ripoff of Mac OS/X, but slow. Even If I like Windows Gamming somewhat, I dont want to suffer from the slow death windows gammer will suffer from the next years. Will be painfull, and I have quit soon enough to avoid the crap enterilly. I hope more games will support linux, and more games like nexuiz and trem start, so gamming on Linux become as intense and interesting as whas once on Windows.

It'll take quite some time before Vista has a big enouth install before game makers will even *consider* using DirectX 10, no matter how good it is.

I do read /. and I don't understand what you mean. I would like to see where it was said that DNF will use DirectX 10 although I strongly suspect it's some kind of joke. Please include the appropriate smiley next time in that case :)

That is a common joke amongst gaming/software circles. Comparing or associating anything with DNF is the equivalent of saying that it'll take quite a bit before it happens.

That being said, I heard DNF will fully use DirectX 27 to it's max potential.
Stop it. Seriously.

I hate Windows.  I think it sucks.  Sorry kids, I'm not a n00b.

Sure, WinXP is finally decently stable, but I've got two major gripes for it.

(1) The interface is obnoxious.  Sorry, it's all WIMP, with annoying pop-up bubbles that always seem to jump up in front of what I'm looking to click on.  To boot, the command line interface is a joke.  Getting something more advanced or more powerful interface-wise is way too much trouble.

(2) No real programming environment by default.  I either have to pay though the nose (MS Visual Studio) or go download a ton of stuff (any of the Open Source tools).  Any Linux distro worth running includes compilers and interpreters for any programming language I would want to use (this statement implicitely excludes Java ;) ).

The two criticisms above are intimately related to my personal usage patterns.  Linux and Unix operating systems happen to be spot on for what I do with computers, warts and all.  I also happen to like powerful, user-unfriendly interfaces (vim, bash and sed).  I'm willing to put the time in to learn them, if they are well built.  I'm not against userfriendly interfaces, they just have to scale with user ability--if it still treats me with kid-gloves, even after I know inside and out, I won't use it.  For the record, I use KDE on my desktop.

I also don't think there is a "best" OS.  You use the right tool for the job.  Whatever that happens to be.

What I voted for is left as an exercise for the reader.  Correct answer is upside down in my .sig if you can't take it any more.
