I am a new player and i am very slow?
« on: May 24, 2015, 08:22:16 pm »
When i play human i cannot jump across the base.  Also if i am human or alien every one outruns me.  I am very slow.  I appear to have little effect when I am a dretch or a tyrant.  its all very slowwwwwww

The sprint key appears to tire me out quick and even when i am sprinting i am still not fast enough.  Some players are able to leap far and wide I cannot do that.  Am new at this game and i cannot understand it

What version are you playing? I assume you're playing the latest full version and not the test version. Here's something I think there is:
  • Hit Escape
  • Go to "Options"
  • Go to "Controls"
  • I think that somewhere in here is a "Walking Speed"
  • If it is not in controls, explore the "options" menu because I'm pretty sure that there is a "walking speed" in the
The sprint key appears to tire me out quick
Make sure you're not jumping like "heck" and also make sure that you do the majority of your walking not sprinting

As a note that sprinting is only available on the humans side and that the dretch should always be able to jump the gap even without the sprint, Again a reason to check your settings

I appear to have little effect when I am a dretch or a tyrant.  its all very slowwwwwww

The tyrant is always slow
If you're looking for me, look on AA2.
My name is l0ne and humans is my game.
Yeah... Run dretch run!

I'm not sure about you but this is how I move around as an alien (fighting bots):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xZnpElccfE
Note: That video is a modification though the dragoon acts the same way it does in tremulous... except for barb snipe.
These are some human examples, (online this time):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYIq_srfHUg - French Connection from Australia - Fighting a marauder with lucifer cannon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8YuL6KFjIk - Italian Connection from Australia
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGd1hOH4Af4 - Australian connection from Western Australia

Other:
Strafe Jumping is a technique used to gain speed.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHKRyd_1exY

But because humans have stamina, the point is you don't try to outrun the aliens... but dodge them.

Letre, Tremulous runs on the Quake 3 engine. As such, the direction your mouse is pointing affects your speed.

You have to spin the mouse up to get more speed. For example, in ATCS human base you can leap from the raised platform that your spawn is on to the other raised platform.

Face the ledge.
Hold sprint
Angle your view slightly downwards
Press forward
(You begin running)
As you reach the very tip of the ledge, press JUMP.
As soon as you jump, begin spinning the mouse from looking forward & down at the floor to upwards.
Your character will gain extra momentum from this mouse-spin and you will cross the gap.

Additionally, I believe that all characters move in a double-chorded fashion -- so if you press up + left you get 2 vector boosts instead of your speed being completely split between the 2 angles.

If this human jumping is very difficult, there's a test you can do as a  :dretch: to demonstrate the power of mouse jumping.

Spawn as  :dretch: and venture to hallway on ATCS.
Look straight ahead (floor level)
Hold forward
Observe your movement speed -- count seconds it takes to hit a wall, for example.

Now return to your starting position
Look upwards at headbite level
Hold forward
Observe your movement speed -- you are moving slower horizontally than you did before.

See, with the :dretch: you are putting momentum upwards but your game state is grounded so you don't leave the ground.

When you jump with the mouse spinning, those momentum gains push you further into the air allowing you to cross the gap. I believe it is not possible to cross the ATCS gap as a human by simply sprinting and running straight at. (Perhaps with pixel perfect timing but I have not been able to achieve this). With a bit of practice the sprint + mousespin in the air is possible.

Additionally, I suggest you check your menu options and enable "always run". When it's off, you walk by default and that can be very slow.

Good luck out there.

At first I tried to play this game with a couple of friends from high school.   We started playing the game and our dretches kept getting shot.  The the human got a mass driver and he was able to pick us really easy. No matter how we crawl around or whichever way we move he was able to pick us with no effort. Eventually as we emerge out of the egg we got shot right away.  The accuracy was tremendous  We just saw no point and stopped playing.  I had to make room for other things so I erased the game.  Thanks for your effort to teach this game

That's called spawn camping. It exists in other games too such as Team Fortress, War Thunder... even Call of Duty iirc.
Only that Team Fortress 2's map makers *tried* to prevent this by team-dependant doors and shoot-through-able caulk. Massive games you still can get a crapload of engineers and/or snipers camping with their turrets at those doors.

You mean you could predict the exact moment that you are going to spawn?  I could see that happening with a rifle or something else but a mass driver?  I dont think that was what was going on here.  I play quake arena in high school computers and with a group of friends and never saw anything that accurate

Tremulous takes practice, especially if you play as alien. The trick as a dretch, is to use wallwalk A LOT and sneak up on your enemies. Don't jump while sneaking because the human will hear you, and keep in mind that, once they wear helmets, they can see you sneaking up on them.

The dretch always spawns directly above the egg. If you focus the MD right above the egg all you have to do is click when you see the egg throb during spawn. Spawn camping is an unfortunate truth

Hello.
Where can I update my 1.1 to 1.2? Is there an update client?

Hello.
Where can I update my 1.1 to 1.2? Is there an update client?

1.2 isn't released yet.  There is a gpp (gameplay preview, that you can get from the top of this page: http://tremulous.net/files/) client which was meant to be an intermediate preview between 1.1 and 1.2.

However, most (shortly, I will explain why I said most instead of all) of the gpp servers are not accessible by 1.1 client, and most of the 1.1 servers are not accessible by gpp clients.  The reason for this is that 1.1 & gpp uses two separate protocols (the yet to be released 1.2 client/server uses a third protocol different from both).  Currently, there are two Tremulous servers that are multi-protocol, which means that all tremulous clients can connect regardless of which of the three protocols is used (I like to use my gpp client on those two servers) .

There are third party 1.1 clients that are much better than the stock 1.1 client from Tremulous.net, one such third party client is Tremfusion.  Instructions for downloading and installing Tremfusion can be found here: http://discourse.grangerhub.com/t/installing-tremfusion-for-playing-tremulous-1-1/220.
