It just seemed silly to me to obviously change what you are saying.
While I thought it said getting evos directly from rets at one point too, that is *not* what it said. It said "evos (I've siphoned) from zapping rets". Now zapping rets (in order to kill humans) is a perfectly good way of siphoning evos. Similarly, zapping rets (in order to kill rets) is not a good way of siphoning evos, you might as well be sucking water from a rock (except for that small window of time on the development server). This is not changing what he is saying, for both meanings are perfectly valid interpretations of his original text. However, the original intent was for the former, while you thought it was the latter. The only thing changing here is your perception of his intent.

AFAIK in 1.2 now you do get credit for damage done by buildings you kill.  Not sure if that translates to evo's or not though.
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

As for your theory about the zap's link being able to kill a respawning human, it’s not really logical when you think about it. I mean, they've just respawned and, what, 1/2 or 1/3 of 25 damage is going to kill a fresh human? No...

I don't think I ever said the humans had to have just respawned. There could also be weakened humans in the base, trying to heal, which is a great time to jump in, and zap the 4 humans crowding around a medistation.

That's a good point; it could just be humans on their way to the med-station that I’m zapping without knowing it. Also, it’s a much better strategy than the one I was using so thank you for the pointers.

I've really been trying to hone my Mara base-storming skills because it's the class I'm best with. Consequently, this means I get left out of a lot of end game moments if I don’t wanna switch to goon. So, honestly, thanks for helping me clear all of that up. This thread ended up being genuinely helpful.

Mara zap doesn't need to kill humans to get evos, it just needs to damage them.  So if the zap chains to a couple of humans while your target was turrets, you'll get partial evos from your damage when they eventually get killed.  If you damaged 5 humans over the course of getting yourself killed several times, and later a rant kills all 5 of them in the hall, you could see 6 evos show up at once.

Yeah, I knew there was the possibility that they were just residual evos from all the previous non-fatal attacks I had landed. It’s just that, when I field-tested my theory, the evo-count increase always seemed so consistent. But, like you guys said, it could really be A LOT of things. I mean, I am INSIDE the enemy base using a chainable attack. There’s a good chance I’m gonna hit SOMETHING worthwhile.

Thanks for standing up for the noob. You’re a good man, F50. Or woman, I don’t know. Your name’s kind of gender neutral but, then again, girls don’t play video games. Not ones made from Quake 3 mods at least.

...In fact, if you ARE a girl, you’re even cooler than I thought.

In 1.2 this doesn't work anymore :(

For realzies?

Who's gonna feed my Advanced Marauder now?

...Look how sad he is.

How you know that marauder is boy, IT CAN BE GIRL : (
Come on! In this penis-driven society, you really think they’d let a woman be an ADVANCED Marauder?

“Shit, bitch, you better go back to Granger!” That’s what they’ll say.

Sure, maybe one day when there’s no more glass ceilings, Tremulous will be a different place. But, for now…

But I'd be shocked (NPI :-) if explosion damage from a building you killed resulted in evos for you - AFAIK the human takes damage from world in an explosion, not from the alien who caused the explosion.

I was a lot more noob then than I am now and, thankfully, I have a much better understanding of the evo/creds system. I just wanted to say thanks to Lisk and everyone else who was patient enough to actually try and explain what I was doing to me.

Though now I know a bit better and usually deal with multiple rets by hopping over them and then far FAR away.

 - Advanced Mara's Electric Attack...
Most people will tell you not to even bother with this secondary attack for various reasons (most are listed above), but there is one way to use your zap effectively.

I don't know anybody who'll tell you not to use the mara zap. and well, the original posts above are VERY old .. lol

 with humans:

on atcs, if I'm  hall camping at the beginning of the game for credits or whatever: I usually stay further back, sometimes much before you reach the third? ramp (just when the hall is long, after turning the corner; it's unlike how you may see some people camp by the fourth? ramp, the one nearest the to A base). This is better for me because it lets you use the range advantage more humans get over dretches..
on larger public games though (with mostly chaotic starts), it probably matters much less

with the exception of atcs, a lot of maps have staircases in them. If you're afraid of them big n' scary rants, crouch and hide under a staircase! They can't hit you there. Well, at least 90% of the time -- definitely on Niveus though

Really, I just wanted to bump this topic. But, also, here's a few tips for Marauders:

-Make every jump a *new jump*...
If you're jump-dancing around a human (which you should be if you're using Mara correctly), he's going to try and watch for your pattern of movement. So don't have one. If you started with a jump left, then bounced right, then another bounce left, the human is naturally going to expect you're next bounce to go right. I can't stress this enough: When playing Mara, DO NOT BE PREDICTABLE! Don't jump in a pattern.

( dodging with humans )
running right into a mara works sometimes; if a mara hops, you can try running right into it - at times they'll hop over your head.. which is good, for you. but of course, you can't expect this to always work

This is the last time I'll post on this necro-ed thread, I swear.

...Okay, so I lied. Sorry.

Just wanted to say thanks to amgh for the pointers. And yeah, as far as the zap goes, I've been using it more these days as a finishing-move for near-dead fleeing humans. In this regard, it works quite well. ;)

But thanks, all the same.
