Multiple GUID's
« on: May 18, 2007, 01:13:52 am »
My brother and I are currently using the same computer. But we have different admin status on certain servers. So I was wondering if there was a way we could have two separate GUID's. I've already tried downloading a whole 'nother version of trem, with a new tjw .exe, but they still had the same GUID.
This particular computer is running WinXP, so maybe I should make another profile and add the second .exe there? I'm not sure, so please help.

There is a file qkey in the base folder.
Make two of them, and make a script that copies the right one in, and starts trem.

Failing that, it will be in "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Tremulous\base".

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Tremulous\base

is not the same as

C:\Program Files\Tremulous\base

One's a hidden folder, the other is not, and it can be found in either.  Capisce?

Had to do a long search to find mine in that folder; the Program Files one didn't have it.

you could just do it the ghetto way and actually copy and paste it to and from the base folder to a holder folder (liek omf no wai!)

He means the game generates one automatically on startup if one's not there, so just put it in a new folder somewhere so the game won't read it and will give you a new one.

As for the script thing, if you're using Windows, you can make a small batch file that can switch between the two GUIDs for you.  I think that's what David was getting at.

This should get you started if you're interested.

I'd write one myself as an example, but, ya know, apparently, I'm just a useless spammer.  Right, Playa?

basically make another folder some place with the qkeys in it and any other files you want seperate. (like autoexec or autogen)

Make a file and call it whatever.bat, the add lots of lines saying 'copy C:\path\to\qkey C:\docs and settings\whatever\base\qkey'
make 2 bat files, one for each of you, and add C:\Program Files\Tremulous\tremulous.x86 to the end to start tremulous.

DISCALMER: I haven't used windows in years, and this was written from memory.

That was so two hours ago...  :P

Not to mention the fact that I apologized pre-emptively here as soon as I discovered that fact...

Nice try, though.

I thought the explosion of comma-philia in the last line would give it away but I was sooo joking there, dude(tte).  Not to mention the extremely non-flamey tone of the whole post.

Ok, I have exactly the same problem with me and my brother, only, I am not a programmer and I am not into writing lines and lines of yadda yadda in computer language.

I also run Windows XP (SP2) and my brother has a different account then I. In the program files/tremulous/base folder, there are not qkey files, however I can find on in the documents and settings/myself and my brother/local settings/application data/tremulous/base folders. Those that mean that Tremulous is reading different qkey files depending on the accounts?

Another question, can I create my own autoexec.cfg files in my documents and setting base folder and will Tremulous read it?

Any reason why the first several responses weren't this? Or why this discussion is still continuing?

Because the OP specifically said they didn't have differnt accounts, and as such we posted alternate solutions.
As for why its still going, no idea.

What I see implies there is no problem with using separate accounts:

The easy way is to make two different windows accounts, *ghasp* you'd actually be taking advantage of the different user directories!!1!1111212121212132312312
Code: [Select]
Linux: ~/.tremulous/base/
Mac: ~/Library/Application\ Support/Tremulous/base/
Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Tremulous\base\

Yep you do have different users for windows but does that effect playing tremulous and having different GUID's if you download them separately from both users.

Yes, it uses different user bases.

And you don't need to download a separate install or install tremulous twice. One installation is enough.

Different users, different files. Otherwise there would be no point in having different users.

Firstly, sorry for bringing back up an "answered" 2 month old topic. I did this because for me and my brother, even though we have different accounts, Tremulous won't read the autoexec.cfg file I and my brother have in our own base folders (in documents and settings). Tremulous will only read the autoexec.cfg file in the program files base folder.

The version of tremulous we downloaded is now about 1 year old, so I wonder if a new version of the client came out.

that's probably because you're using the wrong folder. at one point the per user data was in a hidden folder (...\Local Settings\Application Data\...), but since that caused some problems it got moved up one folder (to ...\Application Data\...), depending on how old your client is you could be using the wrong one.
