I concour with David, I too have seen open sourse game- devs be "driven" away, and it seems like we see less and less of the dev everyday. Exept maybe DASPRiD.  :P Darn it, why do those devs have to have real lives?

Nah, i don't think the devs have been driven away, there's not a lot of dev flaming on these forums. Check spore forums and you'll hear a lot of kill EA things, that's chasing away :P

A year ago, hell, not even. Around the beginning of the 2006 school year these forums were a place of meaningfull discussion. It's been reduced to spam haven, thanks to a handful of individuals. Is it really that hard to get these forums back to what they were?

Maybe the devs, of which some have been working on Tremulous for years now, are a bit 'tired' of working on the same project? And since when does 'no news' equal 'no progress'?

Plague Bringer's comment about spammers is funny, since I know at least some of the forum mods place him in the same corner as the more reknown spammers on this forum.

If 1.2 is still months away, shouldn't there at least be an official 1.1.1 release with bug fixes and selected patches? e.g. GUIDs, sort servers by ping, right-click mass driver zoom, sudden death modes, etc.

There has been progress over the last year, but it has not been officially distributed. For example TJW's "backport" client has been out for a long time, it makes server administration more convenient, and adds no bugs (to my knowledge). It would be so easy to add this to tremulous.net/files, why hasn't it been done?

There has been progress since 1.1.0. Back when I first started to play 1.1.0 there were no ! commands, no GUIDs, no anti-chatspam system, no mods and only the default maps. The two weapon and alien battlesuit bugs (amongst others) have been fixed. Just because these features haven't been rolled into an official release doesn't mean a project is dead or abandonware.

If you're desperately curious as to what's going on then keep an eye on the SVN activity.

you always know how to give me a good laugh.

for being one of the leading spammers who shaped how bad the forums are today, you sure are being a hypocritical bitch when it comes to owning up.

(and by that i mean posting and implying that you arent included in the handful of individuals, because thats what it really looks like.)

and i personally hope that trem 1.2 takes a lot longer to come out, because im more happy with 1.1 than i am with 1.2 tbh.
will sort out my sig, or I will get banned.

HOW DO I SORTED SIG?

Now you expect us to understand your statements based on assumptions
Want to take a stab at returning the forums to what they were?  Stop being a part of the problem.

A person can still download the 1.1.0 client, connect to most servers and play.  Perhaps a community contributed script that would set up TJW's client for windows would be helpful, especially if it turned on autodownloads.  People who play a couple times and move on don't really need GUID's or "updated" clients.  People who stick around can pretty easily find information on how to get it from numerous sources.

Nothing is stopping someone from the community from creating an updated windows install that includes tjw's most recent client (with autodownload turned on    )  It may be received well by whoever would decide to put it up at tremulous.net as the game download, with testing of course.  I don't speak for the dev's, so don't quote me on that :)

Really the hardest part is (not including the devs, of course ;) ) with the server operators, who have updated game.qvm and binary updates, maps, frustrating config changes (with the different patches) and map downloads to keep up with and worry about.  Frankly, that's not really hard though, so meh.

The developers have done a great job already and I'm thankful for that.  They do have lives too, so give em a break, will ya?

edit: No Plague Bringer, it's not hard to get the forums back to what they were.  Shall I start deleting all of your posts now?

It's true. mass driver right-click thing is bad for us macusers. Not only is the Mighty Mouse not capable of left- and right- clicking simultaneously (I have to go back to the dark old days of alt fire on a key) but in fact, when I bind +button5 to ALT and hold that, clicking to fire doesn't work. So until recently, when I got my shitty Logitech thing that only works on white surfaces (we use a decaying sheet of A4), I've been totally unable to zoom with the MD on SVN servers. Although, any time I do, it only gets me killed.

when not at zoomed state
pressing zoom button progressively zooms up to the full zoom level
(so you can also adjust your zoom level)
when you stop pressing you dont lose zoom

when at zoomed state
pressing zoom button, removes the zoom

this would be a good zoom behavior

Can you all at least try to make it seem like a signal to noise ratio leaning towards signal is something that interests you?

I hate deleting posts, but I'm getting really tired of all of the completely off topic noise.

So delete it all.

Its like with litter (which it is),  if I see lots of litter, I'm a lot more likely to drop rubbish.  In a pristine environment, I wont, or at least I'll feel a lot worse about it....

Its the same with spam.  They use the state of the boards to justify it.  So we have 2 choices, delete all spam, or educate all these morons that two wrongs don't make a right.

EDIT:
Also, please drop all post counts off the board.  Lots of it is just posting for the sake of posting.

I already knew that Dasprid was moving and Norfenstein was moving, but we have heard more from two single developers in the last couple months than all the rest combined. (Dasprid and Overflow) How often do we hear from anyone else? We see Timbo and Norf now and again, but half of the developers haven't said a peep since April or even before then. (Check, I dare you) Veda posted in May for the first time since 2004. Who, Dolby, and Godmil haven't been heard from in about a year. The only two who have so far posted in this thread have been the two who have publicly said they are busy. I may be a little (Ok, a lot) harsh here, but I miss you guys...

Fairly simple with a few vstr binds, eh?

Something like;
bind mouse2 "vstr zoomunzoom"
set zoom "+zoom; set zoomunzoom vstr unzoom"
set unzoom "-zoom; set zoomunzoom vstr zoom"
vstr unzoom

That was just a copy and past of something from a mercinaries guild wiki, but it could work, right?

he was refering to the zoom behavior of many games where you can zoom in a variable amount by varying the time you hold down the mouse button, and unzoom by clicking it a second time.

I don't see what's so grim. The devs say they're busy, have real lives, are working on it. Most of the information is available for the average joe to figure out multi-platform download, get a backport, load up some maps, try out a few mods. It would be nice if there were more files hosted right here on trem.net, or if there was an official release which bundled progress so far, but plenty of SVN & QVM work continues by interested parties. Even the so-called state of the forums is to be expected. Strange behavior by contributors is tolerated, and spreads to the general public. That's what happens when your constituency is so Lord of the Flies....

Ah, but any existing work completed on 1.2 is not yet publicly available, nor are some of the files used to create much of 1.1.0.
Anyone got a ATCS.map we can modify?
