[Suggestion] New teamchat command
« on: July 15, 2007, 11:51:36 am »
Hi all! I've played tremulous since the standalone versione come out, more than a  year ago, and I noticed that the game poorly support human teamwork, except for a single -gesture- and teamchat. Humans need to move stick together if they want to have more chances to gun down aliens.

And need to communicate.

A generic bind "say_team Contact!" or "say_team Enemies behind you!" is too generic (even the builder can read this command)... and if the humans have two fireteam at the opposite sides of the map?

So here is my suggestion: introduce a command "say_near" or "say_fireteam" which acts like a teamchat except that can be read only by the teammates located near the speaker (read: in the range of X, where X is a developer-choice or a server-side cvar).

Or just use the taunt to let them know where you are?

coder,
the issue with this is that this idea is very fault prone.

What is more likely required is a 'tagging' kind of system, where you would tag your team mates, and perhaps then be able to talk to them specifically
eg: console command:

/bind 1 say_fireteam MESSAGE (with fireteam being all tagged units)
But it would have to be simple- eg, if you press = , the person will be tagged. '-' untags all units.

Well, JMO, anyway.

Hah hah hah - I actually edited my message 3 times - all before you posted :wink:
lawl, people still play Tremulous ?

No.

Instead of binding a key to say_team, which is utterly useless because if you say "Tyrant spotted!" you've got the riflers in the window room freaking out when the Tyrant is at the four door room. You'd bind a key to say_near "Tyrant spotted." and then only the people close to you, within a certain range, would see the chat. An ingame fireteam system would be useful, too, with the addition of say_fireteam. It'd only talk to the fireteam, which would be close to you, anyway.

I found that to be fairly obvious by reading his post. Did you read his post?

Plague Bringer catchs the idea. I think it would not hard to implement, while implementing a fireteams system could be more tricky.

fireteams will never be used anyway, because it will always be a public game where no one cares, or an organized game with all players on teamspeak just like in enemy territory (except in et smart players would put their whole team in one fireteam and select all of them to tell covert ops from teammats)

Oooooooh - ive seen the light.

Actually, now having had noticed how it could work if implemented properly, it would actually be a good way.

What I think is a nice layout for chat:

1 = Proximity Chat
2 = Team Chat
3 = Global Chat

(Those are keys, by the way)

Apologies coder, I must have misunderstood in some way

are you serious? 100 = less than tyrant slash range.

It was a nice round number.

Seriously, though, say_near could be a really useful command.  Since humans rely more on teamwork IMO (definitely in pub games) anything that really cripples communication (i.e. the lack of a say_near command) hurts humans more than aliens.  Introducing more effective communication for both teams would help balance the game in public servers.

The taunt isn't a substitute for this because it makes noise, and noise attracts big aliens.

Sorry : 100 meters.
PS : tyrant slash range is too big, compared of the length of they're gesture.

I'm not much for fireteams, but I think say_team_near wouldn't be awfully hard to add. I slapped it in my ever-growing list of small patches to make, whenever I get back into the patchmaking game... (Though if anyone else wants to do it first, have at it).

If nothing else, it'd be nice to use for everyone's NADE! binds so the guys back at the base don't get worried half a map away.

I can do say_team_near once my family finishes moving. Sounds easy to me.
