q3map_lightstyle information?

I'm trying to make an area where there is a flame jet (using a particle system) from a broken pipe. The problem is with creating a corresponding flickering light source. I've tried using the dynamic lighting on the particles but this creates more problems, namely FPS drop and multiplicative lighting artefacts. I've had partial success using a modified lightstyle shader from another map but I need to make make some changes, but that's where I got stuck.

Is there any documentation pertaining to q3map_lightstyle? There is little about it in the q3map2 manual, and I haven't found anything more on the forum search or Google. I'm currently down to reading through the q3map2 sources to find out more :x

Any help would be much appreciated.
