Your preferred modeling program?
« on: December 02, 2007, 05:28:38 pm »
Just wondering what you guys use for modeling for Tremulous. Do you spend money on a program, or since we're working with lower end models, do you simply grab something free? Post what program(s) you use and why.

Whilst my knowledge of modeling programs is quite limited. Accusing the free programs of only being able to work with lower end models is quite subject to flame. This will be an interesting topic.

However, You should check out blender. http://www.blender.org

I was only suggesting that paid modeling programs are unneccesary, for many free programs (Misfit, for example) would do fine for Q3 modeling.

I've checked out Blender, 3ds Max, Misfit, Milkshape, and other programs. I'm just wondering what the community uses. If it's popular, it's probably good.

For simple stuff (e.g. component models for Kicad) I use Wings 3D which is purely a subdivision modeler, but one that has a clean interface and is easy to learn and use.

I'm learning blender at the moment - the UV unwrap and animation features look fairly good. The UI is a bit of a culture shock if you're used to 3DS or Maya and the like, but it's proving to be addictively l33t.

I use Maya for practically everything, included mapping and normalmap creation.

LOL, yeah, I hate Blender's GUI. Plain hate. Just can't stand it.

Yeah, I was uneasy with it at first, but it absolutely kicks ass once you get your head around the basics.

There's the free version... make sure to check out the gmax_and_truespace_regists.txt file there for info on how to register.

Also, check this one: http://www.ends170.com/topmod/

Not really a modeling prog, but you can make some interesting stuff with it :P

That's not underground.   FileFront doesn't allow illegal files.  However, last I checked (a year or two ago), the official free links were down, so I upped them to FileFront.

Yes, the GMax download is broken (last I checked) or the file gets corrupted on transfer. And don't worry, FileFront would never, ever allow illegal files into their server. It's as if they hire people to check every file with a fine toothcomb. FileFront rocks, and so does their forum. :)

I've used 3dsmax 6, 7 and 8, GMax, Blender and Wings 3D, and out of all of them I prefer the Max series. It costs you, but you'll not find a more powerful program. Argue with this as much as you like, but 3DSM rules the land of 3D modeling at this point in time.

I've not modeled much, though. Only map objects, a few weapons. I find it a lot harder than mapping, but that may be because I've always been a mapper at heart.
