Citadel - Gareth MapComp Judges' reviews
« on: January 01, 2008, 03:38:11 pm »
Mapname: Citadel
Author: gareth

Story: A group of marines wake to find themselves crashed in a ancient desert temple, some of the crew from their dropship are missing, so the rest of the team set out to find them so they can repair the dropship and continue on their way to the service facility. They don’t reckon on the aliens lurking in the shadows, hungry for more delicious human food.

{0.15}(8) Skill in building, judged from .map.
The map itself looks clean, there are some unattended points like the lack of complete caulk outside the map and a few excrements which extend into the void. They mostly seem trivial though since they do not affect the gameplay in a negative way or have been altered in compile. There are some awkward choices but they are valid in design.
{0.25}(10)Bugs, inconsistencies, judged from playing and inspecting the map.
No obvious bugs have been spotted by me yet.
{0.3}(7) Gameplay, judged from playing.
The map certainly isn’t large but gareth seems to have added some elements which enhance gameplay in such a small space. Although the 8 vs 8 would give a crowded map these elements do keep it playable. The alien stage triggered doors, like uncreation, prevent early pincer movement for both teams. Neither starting base has true expandability potential. A salient detail is that the promenade allows humans to flank tyrants camping the main entrance of the human base, were it not that the stage doors have opened by then. A missed chance in my opinion. There are also some ropes which limit tyrants routes but they have been haphazardly placed. Egghunts will not be a real problem since the map is not that large and there are no true hiding spots which couldn’t be checked within a few dozen seconds of base destruction.
{0.3}(6) Creativity, judged from looks.
The map itself looks clean, maybe a bit too clean. Although the colours are a bit monotone this isn’t a real hindrance and the fact that items like the dropship and light emitting torches have been added count far more towards the atmosphere then that whereas all the blockiness detracts from it again. Blood splatters, ropes, sand, some sounds. He has all the basics included but there is nothing that really stands out.

Total Score (7,6)

{0.15}[8] The building skills showcased, as judged from the .map source.
Clean brushwork with little room for error. Some caulk is missing here and there and there are some weird formations, but nothing affecting the map in a negative way. Decent work.
{0.25}[9]Bugs and other weirdness as found by playing and a little searching.
You have to jump 3 times to exit the water via the small stairs at the top. Too hard.(see screenshot A) Other than that, I couldn't find anything.
{0.3}[7] Gameplay, as judged from playing for a very short period with very little players.
A simple layout that takes a very short while to get used to, with ample possibilities to move to base anywhere nice. While the Human starting location is decent, the Alien base is a bit underwhelming in it's potential, mainly due to the low ceiling, which makes it all somewhat cramped, with little room to nicely hide stuff. With the long straigth hallways and lack of real z-axis combat, frantically running away from your opponents is not quite unlike ATCS, which I would call a good thing. The stage triggered Alien doors are akin to Uncreation, and while they are placed a bit more 'agressive' than on Uncreation, they could have been used in a more creative manner. Some nice hiding spots for Dretches and Basilisks make this map enjoyable for the smaller Aliens, but the aforementioned lack of z-axis combat lessens the value of the Jetpack on this map, which I think is a bad thing. There is more than enough room for the fat Aliens to move about, a good thing.
{0.3}[5] Creativity, as judged from the overall impression of the map
Although clean and fitting with the egyptsoc textures, the brushwork is underwhelming and closely resembles Quake1. There is very little difference in color, which makes the entire map look overly bland and yellow, which is a bad combination with the already yellow-ish textures used. Some nice details like a crashed Bunni transport and some torches scattered on the floor are noted and appreciated. The water is, as Gareth knows himself, laughable to say the least. There are some blood decals, ropes, piles of sand, palmtrees, ambient sounds and -surprisingly- crates strewn around the map, but these cannot alleviate the idea of a somewhat rushed map with some missed creative potential. With this said, the map looks decent and non-obtrusive, which strengthens the overall feeling of a mediocre map, with no real ups and no real downs.
Total Score [7,1]

I think that Lava likes his Quake 1... Don't we all?

Good map. I think that the alien base should be completely reworked, but other than that and the other errors mentioned, a smackin good job! :D

Nice necro, first of all.
Second of all, I think he just used Jex's model (or was it Overflow's?). It's probably included in the pk3, whichever it is.

You can get the model either from Overflow's site or by extracting the pk3 and looking inside it.
