Looking for help
« on: January 18, 2008, 08:58:19 pm »
Hey, I'm pretty new to the GTkRadiant program and having a bit of trouble with certian things. I have a few interesting map ideas Ive been working on and would really like to see them made into playable maps. Also the requirements for maps in trem is alot different then other games, since you need to balance out alien/human starting areas and base locations ect. Having an expericed builder would help alot. If there is any semi-experinced builders out there that would like to lend a hand with a few problems or work on them as a join project you can pm me. I use to make half-life maps but this GTK program is alot different.

It will be hard to find an experienced mapper to work in a joint project, but if you post layouts or problems here most mappers wil help.
I’m busy. I’ll ignore you later.

Yeah, I wasn't really looking for any kind of a pro-builder to work with, just someone that knows most of the GTk functions that I could learn from. I'd have one hell of a long post if I listed all my problems lol. Right now Im trying to figure out how to group brushes together to make a single objectso I can just build all my structures and import them to my final draft of the map.

I would suggest you to try to use this guide : http://www.pythononline.co.uk/et/tutorial.htm

It is WolfET based one, but the GTK principles are exactly the same as in Tremulous. It is an easy-to-read guide and will answer 95% of your questions :)

Good Luck with your maps!

Stop using a whoefully outdated version of Radiant. If you are on windows you can download the latest 1.5 release, if you are on Linux, look on this forum for Ingar's SVN build, if you are on a mac, I don't know what the current version is, but you are sure to find help on these forums.

I've upgraded to 1.4 now for windows, still dont have any Bsp options so I can't test out the maps. also when I try and open maps from 1.2 some buildings are missing walls or the whole building is gone. any ideas?

Download the 1.5 release, go to http://tremmapping.pbwiki.com/ and read the part about setting up Radiant for windows.

Thats actually the site I used to set my GTkrad up, I;ve check it over and over and can't seem to figure out whats wrong. I decided to use Q3map2build to compile my maps and it seems to work fine. But when I star trem and enter /devmap blah , it says *starting map* then gives me teh error g_spawnsvars: found 8 or found 0. Any idea what would cause that? Seems as soon as I find a fix for one problem another replaces it lol

Usually that means that you forgot to add info_player_intermission to your map, afaik.

Radiant isn't really a program to be shared. A map is kinda a personal thing.  Conflicting ideas make for an unbalanced and odd map because of 2 mappers different styles. The best thing to do is learn the tips and tricks by yourself. These forums helped me out alot and members like Odin, Survivor and Lava always give decent response to any problems faced. I also help out when I can :)

I totally disagree with this statement.

If you look at WolfET community, which has a decent amount of mappers, most of the high-quality maps are being done by a groups of people. MLB is a team of 3 mappers, one does brushwork, another terrain, third one scripting (mapscripts) and textures. And their maps are to be known as the highest quality maps for WolfET and even generally for Q3 engine.

Even I have found that working in the team helps a lot (UTR team for WolfET, sadly we fell apart after ETQW was released).

Only if the team works together well, which tbh is hard to do in the current situation. Props to anyone who gets this going though. I might even join as long as I have absolutely nothing to do with texturing except style decisions and more with brushwork.

I would only touch maps from people I know well, and which I like personally. This narrows the amount of mappers in the Tremulous community down to zero. I don't think anyone will care about this though...

Hmmmm....I might consider it. It depends on how plausible your ideas are.
Radiant ate my map alive a day ago and I need a short break from Station15, so I have some free time.
I'm fair with shader manipulations, brushwork, and texturing. Sort of okay with modeling, but I suck at making textures from scratch so my models often end up looking slightly odd.

PM me if you're interested. I can't guarentee exact timeframes but I can help you map if you've got a semi-decent idea.
Just don't make me download 10+mb of textures, please. Dialup sucks.
