The thing is, taste is something that differs per person. For every person that finds it distasteful, there is another person who thinks the opposite. What you basically are saying is that I am disrespectful because I refuse to adhere to other people's tastes.

As stated before, the symbol itself does not have a meaning nor can it be distasteful, only the purpose of the symbol as given to it by the agents participating in the communication can be distasteful.
