Idea to shame feeders

Started by Epiphenomenon, March 29, 2008, 03:24:17 PM

Epiphenomenon

Hello all, I had an idea I wanted to run past you. What if on the kills scoreboard we had a listing of your kills minus your deaths? That way feeders would be easier to spot.

Revan

An interesting idea, or just put kills as they are and then add feeds (or deaths)

I understand that feeders can be annoying but a major issue is that kill/feed count is not everything. Often a player will get killed many times without making a single kill but manage to take down the enemy base. Likewise a player could be repeatedly killed while continually repairing and rebuilding their base. The problem is that n00bs will try to voteckick these players due to their high feedcounts.

vatho

Nicely said Taiyo.uk...

But maybe it could be fined tuned to where like if you were killed by a turret/acid tube, it wouldn't count as a death, and maybe also if they had a construction kit, they wouldnt have a death added to the scoreboard...hmm idk..

benmachine

Timbo has already rejected the notion of a feed counter on the scoreboard:

Although this is not exactly the same idea I feel it is in a similar vein.

This would be what I describe as negative feedback. New players will be feeders for quite a while...thus this won't certainly motivate them (that is, shaming them). Playing bad is punishment enough.

blood2.0

i prefer feeders over campers.

techhead

If you want negative feedback, put people with a lower K/D ratio higher in the spawn queue.
That'll slow down feeders, make everyone else spawn first!

you mean the ones who are not dying will not spawn earlier because they are simply not dead. :-D

anywayz i agree with blood, i prefer feeders than campers.

Paradox

Techhead: Use PGQVM, set g_feedingSpree to how many deaths you want in a minute to be a spree.

Feeds are not counted at s3, unless a player is near their base and hasn't done damage to the enemy.

Your QVM feature wasn't there when I posted that, and I don't run a server anyway.

I do think giving better information in the scoreboard would be a good thing. Not for humiliating anyone, but to have a better idea on how you played. I'd propose something like:

kills / deaths / structure kills / teamkills

At least, I think structure kills should be added to the scoreboard.

Rocinante

Lakitu7's QVM has a feature like that if you want to know how well you did - /mystats.  I think it's better than putting stuff like this in the scoreboard, because noobs are just going to see that you had no kills and 10 deaths and assume you're an idiot feeder, while /mystats would show that you spent most of the time building.

Shaming someone for not doing well doesn't help them nearly as much as teaching them to do better, and may only serve to drive people away from the game if their lack of skill is posted for all to see - a lack of kills is enough for people to feel bad about (though in many cases there's no reason to feel bad about it at all, I've won games by sneaking into the enemy base and destroying it - does that make me a bad player when there's a zero in my kills column?)

Well, I didn't say it as a way of ashaming anyone. Nothing further than my intention. In any case, I think, even if we consider deaths and teamkills negative (frustrating) feedback, structures destroyed is positive and would be a very nice addition to scoreboard. Or else, completely replace kills and structurekills by credits/evos earned (never shared, only earned).

blood2.0

i want a score board that has kill to death ratio and total damage done and damage to structures, damage to enemies  and damage to friends

Sakura-chan/Tsunade

There are feeders who try not to feed <<|and|>> there are feeders who ruined games by feeding all the times.

See the difference. ;D

I've been kicked for camping the base, but also for leaving the base thus feeding. Very confusing for new players, or players that are not as skilled. Shaming feeders would just encourage more camp though.

Amtie

I like the idea of structure kills. But only viewed by team. Like the class symbols for aliens/weapon symbols for humans. That way the other team can't see when they're being base-raped.
Meow.

Can an admin set my name to Amtie please?

Death On Ice

Another necro to add to your list.

Vamprah

maybe we can have something where the color of the name fades red in a highlighted box continually, with each consecutive feed, the box turns more red and at a certain point, this red box needs to recharge before you can spawn or soemthign like this.....

i think the best idea is just longer respond time for feeders.  You can implement this in big servers already by building only 2 nodes.

Perhaps a system where you lose one kill for every two deaths that are caused by enemies? I've seen something similar in Nexuiz, I think. Maybe the kill counter should only go down if enemies kill you twice within a certain time period, such as three minutes.

no that would increase the feeds, what you need to do is limit those feeders therefore less people, i say something along respawn time

How would it increase the feeds...?

oh i thought he meant in credits, I dunno how that is going to affect anyone because people want to play, and I dont think how many kills they have matters....
