I wouldn't classify Tool as metal. Nu-Metal at the least, but that doesn't count.

I would also like to point out that Tool are a good band, and I will listen to them happily.

Fine... "Progressive Rock"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tool_(band)
It's still labeled as Metal, when imported into iTunes. :P

Personally I like all my metal to be in one category, since I'm only a general listener.

iTunes is dumb about that stuff.
My music doesn't have genre tags and I don't use iTunes, most artists don't fall into clean lines of genres so I don't follow the genres anyways.

Ingar

Amorphis
Threatre of Tragedy
Tristania
Therion
Tiamat

Most bands got softer on their newer albums, I usually liked
the older harder work more. This doesn't mean I feel confided to metal,
I can enjoy Armin Van Buuren or Mozart just as easy.

Kaleo

Ahh, Vivaldi. If it weren't for you, we wouldn't have metal at all.

Nice!

If you also like Bach, you may enjoy this. Watch who plays what, and when they switch parts. I'd like to see a metal band cover this piece or some of the stuff from The Art of Fugue.

#82
I would like to see metal covers of a lot of classical pieces, the key is an issue in a lot of pieces however. Needs to be all in minors in order to get the full effect.

That is some cool stuff. I would like to see Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King (Slayer) do some classical covers.
Unfortunatly a YouTube search of "Slayer classical" only comes up with Raining Blood.

EDIT: You might want to take a listen to this as well.

In that case, I think some of the Bach Violin Concertos would be appropriate. Check out this violinist: Kyung Wha Chung - Bach - Violin Concerto - Amin - Allegro: link

Children of Bodom - Vivaldi - Summer That is some cool stuff.

I thought you might like that. I just discovered a new metal band to enjoy. I found that just by u-tubing "Vivaldi"+"metal", because, as you said, Vivaldi is very metal. I think that Baroque composers in general are.

I would say the Top Five Metal Baroque Composers would include:

Vivaldi
Bach
Scarlatti (the son)
OK, Scarlatti (the father) too
Buxtehude or Sweelink or Frescobaldi or Froberger

That is, if you like keyboards in your metal (like overwhelming church-organ sheer sonic spaciousness or intricately contrived clavi- or harpsichord barroca pearls of freakishly formed formal beauty). :)

I lol'd at the second sentence. Slayer is indeed classic.

Kaleo

Violin concertos can be "metalized" (lets coin that, shall we?) easily. Screaming guitar shreds over that would be mind blasting.

And yes, lets all salute the Gods Of Thash. Slayer.

Hmmz, so I guess that would be:

Iron Maiden
Sepultura + Soulfly (I count those as one :P)
Slayer
Black Sabbath
Judas Priest

Then would probably go Metallica with their very first albums.

(In that list I didn't count any hardcore/metalcore. If I had counted them (though it would be impossible to make top 5 then), I'd add these:
Caliban
Heaven Shall Burn
Killswitch Engage
Poison The Well
L'Esprit Du Clan
Arkangel
Faust Again)
May the Spoon be with ya  !!!

SPOOOOOOON !!!

Not a big fan of metal, though the five metal bands I like are: Metallica, Rage against the Machine, Linkin Park, System of a Down and Fighstar (for lack of a better band to choose). Other than that I like all kinds of rock, including post-hardcore, mainly pop-punk, indie etc.

Metallica is the only metal band you listed.
