Cracking audio.....
« on: September 08, 2008, 02:54:31 am »
EDIT: please ignore the bit on screen, audio is now my problem, lower down!

I have just installed Tremulous on my Kubuntu 0710 box. When I start it, the screen goes black then says no signal, but I can hear audio playing. All I can do is kill X (ctrl-alt-backspace) and start it again.... I run it from a console and redirected stderr to a file and got this... can anyone please help??

No but it seems I have it working now! My screen mustn't have liked 640x480, so i used some command line options to change it to 1920x1080 and it now works.... sound seems a bit flakey tho... working on that now.

try enabling openal in the settings. (s_useal iirc, but i'm not quite sure)

OK, in the Options menu I checked and OpenAL is turned on. The audio sometimes doesn't work at all, but usually either comes and goes intermittently or crackles. I am seeing the same issue with OpenArena which I believe uses the same engine (I had to use the same +set r_mode commandline options with both to get the screen issue solved)

But audio in Vegastrike works perfectly... and in Nexiuz, has anybody got any suggestions?

What soundcard? Are you using PulseAudio?

I had a lot of audio problems (including crackling sound) caused by my crappy onboard soundcard. I solved those problems by buying a Soundblaster !Live soundcard. Perfect support for linux. Bought on ebay for 7 EUR, delivery included. I suggest you do the same :)

The "card" is nVidia HDA/Realtec ALC888 (onboard) - as I say, the audio hardware is absolutely perfect with Linux, in fact this box is Linux Media Center Edition - I have played many thousands of hours of every imaginable audio and video media through it to my amp using TOSLINK in everything upto 5.1 DTS and DD without a single issue. Two other games (Vega Strike and Nexiuz) also work perfectly, its just Tremulous and OpenArena that have this issue, and I think both use the same game engine... does this give any pointers?

Try setting s_useOpenAL to 1, or if its already 1 set it to 0.

I had disappearing sounds and other "fun" stuff with certain revisions of the xserver or the xorg drivers. Try to update to more recent versions. It also fixed the random hang ups of my keyboard during my tremulous playing sessions.

autoexec.cfg/autogen.cfg ?! (Put that line in one of that files in your tremulous base folder)

I assumed that this would be where - I have seen those files mentioned several times, but my problem is my installation does not have those files! That has been confusing me a lot. And you can see from the code snip in my first post that the logging also indicates that it cannot find those files. I considered just creating one with that line in it on its own, but 1) I didn't have a file to begin with to model the format after, and 2) I was worried that I would break it altogether!

Here is the base folder contents:

Do /writeconfig in console. This should generate an autogen.cfg

This is what is amongst other things in my autoexec.cfg:

Code: [Select]
seta s_alPrecache "1"
seta s_alGain "0.4"
seta s_alSources "96"
seta s_alDopplerFactor "1.0"
seta s_alDopplerSpeed "2200"
seta s_alMaxSpeakerDistance "1024"
seta s_alDriver "libopenal.so.0"

That is my sound section.

You can simply put the one line s_useOpenAL "1" into a text file, save it as autoexec.cfg and put it into your base folder. It will be executed at tremulous startup.

On a SIDE NOTE:

/.tremulous is not the same directory as /tremulous

Go into /.tremulous and search there! That is the place were your client configuration resides.

Edit: Fixed typo in the quote

ah ha! Thank you, found it. I have put:

seta s_useOpenAL "1"

after all the other sound settings. Couple of questions - 1) is there a reference anywhere as to all the other settings, so I can wander through them and tinker(break) it?! 2) is the above setting any different to the use OpenAL in the GUI?

Thanks for your help!
