Music Composition
« on: October 07, 2008, 08:26:31 am »
Hey, I'm a music composer that's looking into doing games, wondering if maybe you guys needed something. I could send you a sample if needed, but if you don't need anyone of that caliber do you perhaps know someone that would? Any help would be appreciated!

We would love to have you work on Tremfusion - we've already got one guy doing music, and I don't think he'd mind the help. We certainly wouldn't mind the creative diversity. You can find us at www.tremfusion.net, or on freenode IRC at #tremfusion - we'll show you what's been done and give you some ideas on what you can do, if you'd like.

@Ender: So, before an actual Tremulous developer gets the chance to react, you happily snatch a potential contributor away.
Don't you realize that all you are doing at this moment is strengthen the assumptions that people might have about TremFusion and its motives?

@Merancapeman: Just upload some music somewhere, and have people listen to it. Asking if people need a sample is like asking if people need to breathe. How can they ever judge your music without a sample? :)

If they don't need the help, they won't need the sample, but I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a private email account I had to send it to. However, as you've said, I already have some uploaded music on a myspace music account. www.myspace.com/merancape. There are some samples that are techno, and some that are compositional synth. I'm sure the RPG style synth isn't something you want, but the techno material may be of some use. Hope you like it!

Thank you for the music, but in my overly obsolete opinion, it is too timid in all regards. It's nice that you are actually able to produce non-annoying music too.

@Lava I can see your point - would you recommend that everyone sit and quietly wait until the Tremulous developers post first? Or is it TremFusion in specific that shouldn't be so active about talking to people who want to contribute? I'd prefer to look like someone trying to 'steal' potential contributors by being overt about wanting contributions than to look like I don't care about someone with talent and motivation. I realize that you're trying to help by giving me a glimpse of what I can never really have - the benefit of seeing through someone else's eyes. That said, I haven't stolen anything, I've just given someone excited to contribute somewhere to go. I suggest that everyone else do the same. Undoubtedly, Merancapeman will choose whatever project interests him/her most.

@Merancapeman I checked out your stuff on your myspace page. First off, I think "Hill Wanderer" shows some excellent breadth of talent. Not many people today know how to do something thought-provoking and slow like that. You're right in that the RPG synth, while good for RPG's, doesn't fit Tremulous's style very well. Some of the works on there that I think are indicative of talent that could be used for Trem are "Into the Darkness" and, to a lesser extent, "A Dangerous Secret". I'd love to see what ideas you have for an FPS like Tremulous.

If you would like I could come up with something that I believe could fit in Trem. I have many songs in the style of "Into the Darkness," but I'm certain I can come up with better ideas knowing the mood and scenery of the game.

Sounds very nice :) I hope to hear what you have planned for trem in the near future. Don't be afraid to give something unusual; a few experimental ideas would be better than one well-rounded but generic idea in my opinion.

@Lava: I just see it as Ender being more active than the trem developers. I don't know if he could have been more diplomatic but I don't think you should discourage him from putting the effort in. I wonder how much more attention this composer will get thanks to that competition. How much more development will 1.2 get thanks to tremfusion?

@Ender&Lava: You make it sound like he has to join only one project. I'm sure it's up to him how exclusive he makes his work.

hey, i like the electric guitar stuff, however, a bit more crunchness would make it even better ^^ and some deeper sounds like a tyrant bass guitar player.
reminds me a little bit to the soundtrack of the 1st Dune game.

keep it up and play so much tremulous to get the exact feeling of it :-)

Into The Darkness is uber pwnage. I love you. Mods listen to me, his Myspace music is the greatest thing i have ever heard. I will pay this man money (through my mothers credit card) to get him on this game. Do it now, he is fantastic. I also play music by ear, i can KIND OF read music but i really just do it whatever. I worship you.

My god it's been so long since I've been here... Makes it seem like I've been slacking. Well, my computer suffered a meltdown, and I've reformatted the drive. About a month ago I finally got it up and running. I've also had a job and school to worry about, but that's no problem. As odd as it sounds, I'm back and willing to help out at any moments notice if you still need someone. And... Wow Fraz, lol. I'm... not sure what to say >.>

Meran, I listen to a variety of music. I like anything with talent, so mostly I listen to metal. I think if you wrote something very dramatic and exciting, Trem would consider you. Something that you would hear on a movie advertisement. Like Lord Of The Rings or something. And throw in some INSANE drumming and growly guitar riffs while your at it. PS: add me on myspace. I'm Whats-His-Name.

I'm sorry I've been out for so long. There have been a lot of bad things happening this year, and I hadn't been able to deal with it very well. I realize that things have changed, so my services may not be required in the least. I'd just like to point out that I'm available if I can be of help.

I'd just like to second Ender's take; namely, that we over at TremFusion (and myself in particular) could use some help with music 'n stuff.  If we had two guys bouncing ideas off each other, that'd be siiiiiiick.

EDIT:  What do you use as your primary DAW?

Mostly Fruity Loops 9, Cubase SX, and Reason 4. I can do some pretty sweet stuff with the latter - dark and foreboding. I'm going to get back into playing Tremulous to get a major feel, but I think I know enough to get to work on some samples.

Heheh, sweet. I have good thoughts about this. I need a good project, and this game will definitely fit my tastes in music. I'm thinking a new-agey metallic sort of music. Have you ever heard the soundtrack to Descent or Shivers? Very dark, something that inspires an Aliens-esque theme.

Hey guys, I'm uploading a song to Myspace. Yes, it's been a while since I posted and for the same reason as the last. My computer bit the dust, so I'm now typing from my nifty new PC. Anyway, it's called "Shady Scene." It probably isn't intended for in-game, as in roaming around the maps, but it does sound like it could fit a menu of some sort. Tell me what you think!

I was gonna suggest Shady Scene, it sounds very akin to trem-style things. Good job!

Trem is more of a fast-paced game so I suggest turning up the tempo for anything in-game/in-map.

I also realize that this is the internet, but even more so this is the forum for a video game on an internet, then even beyond that this is TREMULOUS forums the Satan version of all video game forums for a video game that is ON the internet.

In-music won't work because listening for movements and ambient noises is such a vital part of the game.  Ever tried playing with no sound on?  Playing music during a game has virtually the same effect.  You might want to focus your efforts on other things such as intro/theme/menu music.

Therein would reflect upon the playing style of the gamer. Some people *may* want music. It can also rely on the style of music playing. Something soft, but dark. Maybe even percussion - Return to Castle Wolfenstein comes to mind - would be enough. But a steady dark beat could still run in the background. Trust me, you'd have to be deaf not to hear an oncoming alien. However, if the player finds that the music inhibits his fighting, it can be turned off. I know what you mean, though. I turn my music off when I play Oblivion just so it can feel more realistic, but to instill horror it may not be a bad idea to have a little mood music keeping your heart-beat to the rhythm. Think of it as an interactive movie.

Hey, really liking your music and I think it'd be very suited for Trem. Maybe just amp up the tempo like Winnie said.

Good job though!

Finally got things working, updated music software. I don't know how far along development you guys are, but maybe you'd like music akin to this? Just finished it a few minutes ago. http://www.muziboo.com/Merancapeman/music/industry#

The quality of the sound on the site is only 64kbps because of the site, not because the actual version is that low a rate, haha. Hope you like it somewhat!
