Title: Turrets
Post by: Kiwi on March 27, 2009, 10:27:18 pm
Is there a way to change the amount of damage that a turret does?  If so thanks...
Do you change it in the game.qvm or the server.cfg or something else?

Most things like that are in tremulous.h.
Change it, recompile, and watch as no one plays on your shitty server.

Your right. MGdev with the increased turret damage is really full of noobs. QED.

Honestly, leave these forums for good if you are going to have that attitude. There is no excuse for being an asshole to someone wishing to code. If you feel the need to insult everyone who asks a question about modding, than kindly leave and never come back.

What if Timbo asked a question back when he first learned to code and someone was an asshole to him?

I guess the developers put all that stuff into a separate header file to make it easy to change the values. Hey they even provided macros to scale all human or alien damage and health values. Of course you can easily break the balance when you modify tremulous.h, but that's no reason to damn every server that doesn't use the same tremulous.h that Moses brought down from Mount Sinai.

Code: (/src/game/tremulous.h) [Select]
...
MGTURRET_DMG 4
...

^^^^^^

Edit that.

I lol'd, and applauded. Enjoy your +1.  :D

Thank you guys... I'm not trying to screw up my server, but it already is due to turret damg being set to 20(which I didn't do!  I'm trying to fix that)

Thanks for you help

It's easier to flame than to provide constructive advice, and a lot of pple on these forums wants to sound big and tough so they slam anyone who has an idea.

I find it funny that Kiwi wanted to fix the turrets and consequently the game balance and we had people assume he wanted to destroy it.

SCREW YOU GO AWAY.[/flame]

+2. It is easier to flame than offer constructive advice, if only because complimenting someone implies that, for a moment, they have a larger e-penis than you.

If it needs fixing, then its already been broken...

Yes, and you were the first to assume that Kiwi's server was not broken before he asked how to fix it. Choosing instead to flame.

Firstly, I gave the answer.  Interestingly, all you've managed to do in this thread is start a fight.
More importantly, he said "change".  I think its perfectly acceptable to assume the default state to be unmodified in such situations.
I'm not going to sit here and encourage people to make crap servers.  If this guy wants to fix it, then good for him, but he's the exception not the rule compared to most people who come here asking how to change things.

"this guy" <-- is it really that hard! c'mon it's right to the left!!!

anyway, just because my files I got for my server were messed up, that doesn't mean that I changed my settings and then FORGOT and had to post here to fix it!?!?  I mean seriously, I'm trying to learn how to get control of my server so I can make it a decent server...

Start a fight? I don't think that's what I was trying to do. Merely make a pointed statement that people's initial reactions always tends towards the negative in an attempt to get people to see how negative these forums are getting. There's many people who are getting an "elitist" attitude which I find distastefull. If you wish to see this as trying to pick a fight then you are entitled to your opinion, but that was not my intention.
Oh, and yes you did give the answer, but in the next breath you flamed, which I find to be an intresting counterpoint to your otherwise useful post.

Please remember, to assume is to make an ass out of u and me.

Hey guys, I'm back!
Sorry for the upset attitude before :( I really appreciated all of your guys' help(I was just having a bad day)
Anyway, I decided to post my fix here to help anyone else who happens to stubble across this page.
1. I downloaded the source for my game.qvm file again.
2. I edited tremulous.h in src/game/
3. I changed the turret damage, then saved.
4. I changed dir back to my source folder.
5. I ran sudo make.
6. I found where it saved my new game.qvm file, and copied it to my base folder.

That worked for me, and if you have any questions feel free to ask :)
Thanks,
Kiwi

5. I ran sudo make.

Tip: You shouldn't use sudo if it isn't necessary.

I ran make, and it told me permission denied.  If just make works for you :) use that.

No, never ever do it with sudo.  If it say permission denied, then fix the permissions, sudo just added more permission problems.

Damn, the button "relpy" should be removed. It just added more annoying problems.

Colynn was making a joke about the reply button  ;)

Usually it's best to not used sudo unless you're making changes outside of your home directory. Something like

Code: [Select]
sudo chown -R user folder

(Where user is your username and folder is the folder you're having trouble) is usually enough to make any of those permission related problems go away. Good luck with your server.

Ok, thanks for the tip... and I'll do the best I can with my server, thanks.
