Hello everyone, some of you here might know me. I used to be a member of [<3] and Drip. (US Tremulous clans)
I like Tremulous a lot and here is a few pictures I would like to share with you. They might not be HQ, but they are 100% Tremulous.
My vision of Tremulous Dragoon.

What a helpful team!

And from Grangers with Love.
Hi, I am Zoe. I know nothing about Tremulous, I just got here because of my looks. They told me I would be an Easter Egg, whatever that is.

What do they teach them in schools? Never shake hands with aliens (http://archive.mercenariesguild.net/Comics/Garoth/tremComic002.png). Even gwangers
-
overkill strikes back ;D
-
I love OK.
-
granger is best one :P
-
I like these. :D
Yes, they're wiggly and a little oddly shaped but they're colourful and CLEAN which makes their oddness look like stylization. You're good at keeping a picture from looking cluttered, you just need practice to get a better grasp for shapes and poses.
Thanks for the pics and I hope to see more!
-
lol @ camping humans. :D
-
Very well, I have added a rather silly couple of pictures. It seemed you all liked grangers. You may find them in my original post.
To Nux: People offering help without someone asking for it are rare indeed. Usually they just give up after a massive amount of rejection. All these pictures were just a quick sketches which I then colored a bit. The ping-pong players barely look human, but they are just minor comic characters, so they can live with it. Thank you for your interest nevertheless and hope to see some more Tremulous artwork from you. <3

ROFLMAO: "Overmind located, sir"
A bloodhound granger, how twisted ;-)))

FREE THE GRANGERS!!! >:(

Revenge of Grangers added for Chess guy who obviously feels some sort of sympathy for these creatures.
-
Overkill, you fucking rape.
Do you still have all of the pics from the <3 forums?
-
Yes, even the ones from Mirror and Sub Zero. Do you miss any of them in particular?
-
They were all amazing. Just put 'em all up. ;)
-
I missed your pics OverKill :D
-
OK all the old pictures for Mr. Whales. Sub Zero included. Mirror unfortunately had his own hosting.

Two really old animations. Like 2006 old. Excuse the crappiness.
-
Are you sure its adv granga?
-
I have no idea what that green thing is, but GET IT OFF ME!!!
The text in that animation is sort of weird and they are uglier than a rotten granger corpse, that is why I decided not to include them into the original post. People would just ran off and wouldnt even get to see the rest of them pictures. But they are Tremulous related so I posted them.
-
Glad to see more from you, Overkill. Why don't you join our channel any more? We miss you. :(
The only thing I have to critique is, I'd like to see signatures on your sketches, so months and years down the road we can remember whose creativity this is. :D
-
I miss the old [<3] crew too. Most fun I ever had with Tremulous I reckon.

After many tests, new prototype of weapon is availible! Extracting alien DNA, our scientist managed to combine the raw vicious attack power and regeneration ability of aliens with intellect and technology of manking into one powerful weapon! Order now, every 10th prototype comes free of charge! Tell your neighbours!
Almost as big as tyrant, heavily armored, with jetpack, rocket launcher and pair of painsaw-based weapons (with range extended up to 8 feet), the aliens will need to come up with advanced overmind (with telephatic abilities) and flying advanced advanced invisible bazilisks this time.
Imagine this thing jetcamping / rocket spamming in ATCS.
-
how?
-
Bad ass mofo, won't even fit into the ATCS base.
-
how many credit's is that?
-
2K sounds about right. Also because of its weight the jetpack is extremely slow, but useful when fighting invisible flying bazilisks. And the rockets (mini rocket launchers are attached to the jetpack panel thingy) are ultra slow and only deal 400 damage to up to 4 targets, damage is reduced by 100 with every game meter. Only good for killing alien base, rest of combat gotta be melee with dual painsaw-like weapon. Full HP tyrant vs this thing should be quite a fair fight. Humans can progress through the map slowly with this thing being a regenerating tank. Smart aliens will of course kill this mofo last and 1st deal with weaker shooting humans. The number of rockets should only be 2 because of balance issues. (no rocket spam @ alien base)
-
My electric BadAssMofo had a malfunction with its taunt function, it kept spamming it. Luckily I found it and called the "vets" quickly, can you imagine my embaressement if the neighbors heard?
-
*post above was deleted and Bio-Corp assault squad was sent to neutralize author*
Soon after, Mark II model was released, with enhanced taunt capabilities.
-
Sorry. No more jetcamp guys.
Decapitator
Stage 3. 4 Evos. 150 HP. Primary attack with claws (about marauder primary attack strength?) secondary attack "charge from above" with damage calculated upon distance, should be really strong because before it gets to target it will most likely be badly wounded.

Tremulous non-related stuff I'm working on now. Any suggestions welcome.

Holy fucking mother of toad.
Do a wallpaper please!
-
OverKill is mad. I love you.
-
Do you use a tablet for these?
-
Thanks for nice reactions guys. Which one you would like as a wallpaper? And 16:10 or 4:3? Critique would be welcome though. These images are nowhere near perfection. I only started like a month ago. (only simple sketches before).
I use GIMP(GPS) with a few custom brushes and Alchemy for basic concept. Occasionally MyPaint(all open source). I draw with the very same mouse I play Tremulous with. I never use any reference, although I should. I'm afraid it'd be limiting my imagination in some way.
I feel a bit bad for promoting my stuff here under Tremulous artwork section, hopefully I'll come up with more Tremulous pictures.

If only there was a way to persuade you to transfer two little storyboards I made up into comic strips... damn.

Glad I manage to keep you interested Nux, we have to play Transit again sometimes. Kamikaze saw/rifle rushes were really fun.
Here is some newer stuff, I hope I'm improving a bit. Again, any feedback would be more than welcome.

your brush handling is nice! i see you are technically good at the software you're using. (i guess photoshoop)
for making brick walls and rocks i guess you should see some manga footage. they are really good at this sometimes.
as well as the light; always make sure that the light of the background fits to the picture you made.
you can also make a basic picture and do the rest of the shading on another layer with masks. it helps a lot and makes it adjustable later, and it's not affecting the brushes you made earlier.
for the brick wall: don't use outlines if you don't use them on the whole picture. for the whole picture you can make a layer with color samples you use and also can save swatches. outlines can work well with other colors than black too!
like.. if you make the outlines of the brick on a layer and give it another layer with black--->grey gradient, you could have gray colors where sunlight reaches the stones then it turns black when they are in the shadows.
nice to see you are using alchemy too. i suggest you should use it for sketches like frank miller does his comics.
its useful and fun to put the weight on the "canvas" first than the form.
have fun and be very-very patient while drawing!
-
I like the river!
-
Thanks for your time and effort Optimus. I saw what can be done with layers and I know I need to use them way more. And I really am using Gimp, because I don't fancy Adobe nor warez. You have fun too, I know you do!
And thanks Helix, I'm glad you like the river... drawing water can be a bit tricky. Talking about tricky... I forgot to add lava reflection to the river surface... See? Tricky.
-
ilu
-
I guess masks and layer attributes are not only Adobe-fanciness.
i'd advice you to make more drawings by hand to achieve more success in making digital pictures!

Best yet!
It's cool how fast your pictures are improving. :O
I'd say you have the enthusiasm to go far (It shows). That motivation is all it comes down to really since that's how you find out what works and what doesn't.
Keep it up!!
-
Am I crazy or did you flip that picture? :-X
-
Flipped? I'm sorry, I did no such thing. You must be seeing things. Is it still hot in Cali? >:(
OK I flipped it. A bit. I thought the road would make more sense to the eye if it was from left to right. I need to work on composition and image integrity. (and on all other things)
A planet that was overrun by some sort of aliens (Grangers took it, ok?). Extreme conditions, two suns, really really hot. (the composition yet again is horrible)

Each piece of artwork gets better and better in a schizophrenic kind of way. Not to say that you have schizophrenia of course. Epic artwork is epic. :)
-
hawt, do you have a deviantart account?
-
Thanks a lot guys, although just a few words, it means a lot to me. I don't really have much people around me and it takes years to get noticed on deviantART (unless you spam smileys and links to a funny cat pictures on every profile you see, which makes me sick)
My DA: http://nrekkvan.deviantart.com/gallery/ don't expect anything wonderous, I really only started like a month ago. But at least you can see the way I try to progress. Before it was only very, very basic sketches such as these on the 1st page. Thanks again for your time, interest and support.

Yeah please try to get worse. Thanks.
-
WTF. They just keep improving!
That ^. Keep it up :P
-
The last two were unbelievable. How do you do it? Any tips for someone starting out?
-
Sure. Get a Gimp (free open source), get a bit familiar with it, good start could be editing existing images and toying with effect and stuff.
You need to either use a reference (you can simply open an image in Gimp, add a new layer and start reproducing it) or you can try to come up with things straight from your head. That's what I always try to do. But this requires a lot of inspiration, pause a film during an intense scene rich on environment or just take a better look at that temple in your favorite RPG you passed 300 times before without noticing anything else but the fact that it's a temple and it's gray.
The technique I use is a pretty basic one, there are a lot better / advanced ones.
1, canvas size - think about what you are about to draw. Landscape? Let it be wide. Very wide. Weary freaky claustrophobicaly looking picture with focus on one character? Definitely not wide, quite the opposite
2, defining the base image structure. In order to start drawing envos(environments), you need that. Just basic shapes you will be adding details on. Don't start on white background no matter what you are doing. Not even snowy picture. Use huge brushes with low opacity. Lets say you want to draw a hot desert planet like I did. File / New, set resolution (like 1200 x 700 should be ok for starters) select an interesting tone of reddish warm yellow (not banana yellow that is) and use the fill tool to fill the entire canvas(image) with it. Now use huge brushes with low opacity and start defining. No details whatsoever at this stage. I do the sky already here at this point. You need to have desired composition and perspective in your head by now. By drawing sky, I define the overall composition of image. Then with these huge brushes with low opacity start defining the terrain. Make them over and over again, so the image gets some weight. Mountains, cliffs, whatever. Still no detail whatsoever. By now you should have a rough sky and the rest of picture filled with messy brushes you will later turn into something more detailed.
3, defining the primary light source Talking about environments, that would be sun/moon. You NEED to know where it is. Not 100% precisely, but precisely enough. Pick a dodge/burn tool and start adding details with it. You are now about to create a basic lightning for your picture. Say the sun is to the left, left hill/mountain side you will lighten, the right one you make darker. You can create a lot of details at this stage. People who know what they are doing (sometimes, very occasionally even me) can create entire cities just by doing that. You should have a rough concept now. It must be obvious that that thing is a building and this is a hill by now.
4, adding additional colors and details First things 1st. Get custom brushes. Get lots of them. The ones where you don't have to join the authors secret cult and eternally praise his name will be best. Google it, search DeviantART, whatever. Thinking about creating a detailed and rich environment with the basic round brush just hurts. Experiment with them. If a grass or cloud brush looks good on that mountain, good for you, use it. In this stage you get creative with brushwork and add more colors than the ones created by lightening and darkening our basic yellow. The colors you started with must stay dominant, or you lose the image integrity. Add a light grayish green with low opacity on your mountains. Add some gray or dark red and start creating some interesting textures. Little stones close to us, architecture, whatever. Make dead trees, crashed spaceship, characters, whatever you can come up with. Don't forget to add step 2 to your newly made objects, at least the major ones. (only tiny stones etc. can get away without it) If you got carried away at this point and made a detailed nice image, make sure the sky is as HQ as the rest of the picture. Sky affects the overall mood of your envo a lot, keep that in mind.
You need to know the basics to complete this stage well. Decent perspective, your objects of focus, and things like the closer something is to the viewer the sharper it usually gets. Background should (doesn't have to though) be blurry and slowly blending into the sky. Your objects of focus (interesting stuff in your picture) should be sharp and well defined, use small hard brushes. You should know how to use warm and cold colors, too.
5, finishing even if it doesn't look as good as you hoped don't give up! It's a digital image, there is nothing easier than to adjust it! Experiment with colors, make them warmer, colder, or even entirely different for an interesting mood. Try darkening / brightening it / sharpening it, adding effects, whatever you can try try it. You never know. But if it's a crap it will usually just stay a crap no matter how hard you try.
If anything remains unclear, like how to get custom brushes or even what I mean by "brushes" just go ahead and ask. Have fun with digital art.

I don't care if it's related or not, I want to see it.
I love you Overkill.
-
zomg zomg that is so oblivion!

Thanks Whales ^_-
I did that one with nothing particular in mind and no reference, I just wanted it to be a temple or such. But I guess I have been playing Oblivion way too much.

the turret perspective sux, lotsa things about it sux, but I just need to keep practicing (EDIT: atmospheric perspective was obviously not even implemented in this one, that why it looks so flat)

NO, seriously that looks exactly like oblivion!!!!! Faeis right
-
It's great to see how prolific an artist you are! So when I say this, I mean only to encourage and inform.
I'd say the quality peaked at "Too much sun (http://fc09.deviantart.com/fs51/i/2009/257/f/6/Too_much_sun_by_Nrekkvan.jpg)". I liked this picture because though the subject was desolate and not too specific, the picture was alive with the activity of a land still burning in the harsh sun. It was a very pretty picture and tops everything that came after it.
-
Yes Nux, Sir, I know. It's sort of easy for me to create something that just looks good, but it's not very specific. But I really need to be able to portray things more precisely, hence the last two pictures. Hopefully I'll be able to combine overall good looks with specific detail in not so distant future. I think the key to this is to first make sure the composition and overall image looks good, then focus on details. I'm glad we both see my pictures the same way, it tells me my perception is not too off. Thanks for feedback, much appreciated.
-
I use GIMP(GPS) with a few custom brushes and Alchemy for basic concept. Occasionally MyPaint(all open source).

Yes, I have seen that before, amazing stuff and funny innitial commentary. I think I have seen it presented at Gimptalk.com.
I have had fun with this, because I never draw snow, tank or city ruins before. Gimp, no layers, no reference, around 3 hours. Suggestions and critique or even questions more than welcome. The composition and perspective could be somewhat better I think, but I sort of like it. Tell me if you think (or feel) that any area should be sharper.
-
Oooh, nice! ;)

Nice stuff. I can see a lot of potential in that last pic. Maybe add some grizzly details. 8)
Here's some of the stuff I'm seeing in the Alchemy shapes: http://collaboratenow.cozimo.com/collaborate?url=http%3A//fc00.deviantart.com/fs51/i/2009/262/7/5/mission_f_______failed_by_Nrekkvan.png (http://collaboratenow.cozimo.com/collaborate?url=http%3A//fc00.deviantart.com/fs51/i/2009/262/7/5/mission_f_______failed_by_Nrekkvan.png)

How will someone know that there is snow in that image? :P
-
I thought it was Black n White.
-
How will someone know that there is snow in that image? :P
It does indeed look like a camouflaged version of a snowy picture. The only hint is the ice on the tank.
-
Thanks for reactions guys. You are actually better feedback then I ever got on any art-related forum. I have two possibilities. Add a light blue gradient to the entire image, then the white snow would pop up. Or make it snowing. But I sort of like it as dead as it is.
-
I like it how it is, the snow doesn't have to be apparent.
-
dude, this stuff is bloody awesome.
-
OverKill, click 'Collaborators' then you can show/hide stuff from various people (Timbo's dick).
Hide my skull outlines and take a look at the Alchemy-generated noise to see why I outlined those areas.
Anyways, this is just to show some people here what Alchemy is good for. ;)
-
This last one I actually did not use alchemy, entire image was in gimp on one layer. To get some initial weight I used a few huge custom brushes and splitters. I can still see most of your skulls, well found. And someone added a tank crew as well!

Actually since this has become such a community gathering, which makes me happy, and the topic says "My Tremulous pictures", not "OverKills Tremulous pictures", feel free to post any sketches you made in Alchemy (or Gimp, by hand, whatever you fancy), just obey the forum rules. Feedback feels good and it's fun, so why not try it.

We all see different patterns. Nux however sees penis patterns.
-
I was myself rather surprised how phallic it got, but it reminded me of good times and laughs we had on a high school. And it was me who really liked the dragons, Nux. I even started adding one before I realized it would fit the environment perfectly, but absolutely killed the picture composition.

I am well aware that you would never draw a dick into someone's else picture dear Nux!
Here is my latest, its a speedpaint so don't zoom in for too much fancy detail. But I hope the mood is right. Gimp, no layers, about 2-3 hours.

wow, breath-taking :)

I <3 your fancy pants artsie skillz overkeel 8)
-
Overkill, your landscaping is absolutely breathtaking; it is well composed and pleasant to look at.
I would recommend getting some books on drawing figures though: it seems you suffer from many of the problems you had with your earlier artwork when I see that last picture.
The human figure is one of the most difficult things, if not the most difficult thing to draw.
If you have any spare money, I would invest in a few books that could help you take your art to an even higher level and start adding living things to your work.
Keep it up man!
-
To play devil's advocate, Killer Whale isn't completely correct. As with everything, drawing the human figure comes more naturally and easily to some people than others. I see that landscapes come incredibly easy for Overkill (lol stfu pervs). I have this thing for noses. My friends find it really difficult to draw a somewhat okay looking nose, while I find it incredibly easy.
However, I think your cartoonish people is less a question of what your style is and more a matter of lack of understanding of the human figure. If you look at some anatomical diagrams, it might help you, even, get an understanding of how muscles and bones interact and their proportions with regards to the rest of the body and such.
-
Hey guys, thanks a lot for feedback again! The guy on that pic is not human, or at least not anymore. Check the fullview please: http://nrekkvan.deviantart.com/art/Edge-of-Sanity-138469108 I should have made the figure bigger, that few details that make him clearly unhuman are sort of hard to see. And could you be more specific about the anatomy of this specific picture? Thanks again!
-
I think they mean that the human-like creature in the picture looks a little stiff and flat. Unlike with walls and landscapes, the pose of a creature is very important visually and subtle changes in the positioning of a body part can mean the difference between a relaxed posture and an alert posture.
It's particularly the head and shoulder which look uncomfortable in this picture. You could achieve a more natural pose by having the head face more toward his forward and have his shoulder dropped slightly, showing more depth with the arm by facing the elbow slightly away from us. He needs to look like he's carrying the weight of that sword in a meaningful position (e.g. Resting, Ready to strike or Making a gesture)
It's always best to take a look in the mirror if you have trouble finding natural poses.

I am well aware that you would never draw a dick into someone's else picture dear Nux!
Here is my latest, its a speedpaint so don't zoom in for too much fancy detail. But I hope the mood is right. Gimp, no layers, about 2-3 hours.

Hey guys, I have been offline for like two weeks. Weird, especially now that Finland made 1Mb broadband access a legal right for everyone. I made a lot of pictures, but at this point it's all just one huge practice so I won't be showing them all. Here are three I almost like. Hope you like, thanks for looking and any feedback is of course welcome.
Warzone: 3000
Soldier, ruined city on the background and two spaceships. Around half an hour. Gimp. It's not detailed but I hope you like the mood or something.

Brint It
Full of hate and pride, a warrior descents deeper into the lair of the beast. Holding tightly to his magical sword, he believes he is ready to face anything that should lurk deep in the shadows of the old tomb. Hence the name. Gimp+mouse, around 3 hours, no reference. Oh and sorry for the blue hair, I couldn't help it. I promise I will do plenty of standard blackish hair in the future.

Connection: Lost
Spaceship facing some weird apparition. Gimp+mouse around 2 hours. Could use some more fanciness but I got tired of it.

The last one is the best but could do with something in front of it to give it some context. Something like silhouettes of rocks and stuff.

Greetings!
Thanks a lot for feedback, Nux!
A few little speedpaints (5minutes - 1hour) - right click and "Open Image" this forum won't let it show in full res

Dragon and Knight (too difficult for me, I admit, but some parts are OK)
This stage I'm in now is sort of hard, because I see most of mistakes I make but I'm not technically efficient enough with Gimp and mouse to correct them all in sane time. So I don't really like anything I make, but I sure love practicing. Thanks for interest and have a nice day.

What's the opposite of eye-bleach again? I need some.

Dragon and Knight (too difficult for me, I admit, but some parts are OK)
did you make that??
-
Yes, who else? But actually thanks, your doubts improved my mood, be them joke from your side or real.
40 minutes speedie I just did, hope you like, thanks for looking.
Forgotten Mines (I'm still not good with naming)

The knight is ok, the dragon looks a bit like the cross bread between a dragon and a dragonfly.
-
wow nice man!
-
Speedies ftw!
-
Amazing! It's funny if you look at your original pics and compare them to these ones.
You know what you should do? You should do artwork for some of these tremulous maps instead of having an in-game screenshot when loading.
-
Thanks for nice reactions all, really encouraging! Just the kind of motivation I need to hear at this stage.
As for the Tremulous artwork, I'm more thinking about a wallpaper (battlesuit in the middle, next to him 2 soldiers, they are all in the cave, outside the cave there is plenty of bugs [soldiers can't yet see them, but they are with guns ready as if they knew] - some sort of harsh desert planet) - Any suggestions welcome
The Judge of Souls (right click and "open image" for full view plox)
The Judge sees through the Light just as he sees through the Darkness. Sword for those of foul heart or open hand as an invitation for those who managed to keep their humanity at the end of their path.
You can't really bribe or cheat this guy.

HAVE MY BABIES PLEASE!

This one is pro. Very pro.

Thanks a lot Nux, Demolution and everyone else for comments!
today's fun in Gimp (You can't really take it as a picture, I was just fooling around trying stuff I normally wouldn't) Two speedpaints combined, then adding details and effects. (and snake, erm) Right click and "open image" for full view should you wish.

I will probably be doing a Tremulous wallpaper, but I don't want to promise anything quite yet. If you'd like that, I'd love to hear some suggestions, such as what should it portray and how.
-
You say "My Tremulous pictures" But suddenly you post "urbanTerror".
I am confuse ???
-
Mmhm. I love the artwork, but it's not too Tremulous-y anymore.
-
Good rating. :P
