Title: Forum Karma
Post by: Kiwi on January 19, 2010, 10:35:17 pm
The Karma now displays the + and - votes, but you can't edit them any more?
It's like an expired poll...

Whys this?  Is it permanent?

Best Regards,
Kiwi

[build] [decon]

probably higher post count required (Though you have nearly 300 that should definitely be sufficient)

edit@ David: you can see post count?

Yeah, 278 should be high enough to [build] and [decon] in my opinion.  If this is what's causing this, can I ask why you bumped up the post requirement?

Someone cares about karma :D
Why Of Course ;)

And you have 300 posts, perhaps only devs, downers, and wiki people can adjust karma, but that's even more silly than a high post requirement?

How can you have, say, "+70/-120" TURRETS.  It says: "turrets: [insert retarded, default, smf, karma system here]."  Turrets.  It's all in the turrets.

I honestly don't see the point in changing, it's not like the karma system means anything anyways, but now it just looks lame.  Maybe put karma instead of turrets.
Title: Re: Forum Karma

reminds me of the HOVEL debate
Title: Re: Forum Karma
Post by: your face on January 20, 2010, 01:10:36 am
Says the guy who has had -100+ karma for years.

Reminds me of when you say something someone doesn't want to hear, they use their uber moderator powers to make themselves feel better.

It just looks clumsier, but honesty, I guess it's just personal preference.  The other one looked more "clean" imo.

Title: Re: Forum Karma

I can build and decon. But I have high post count and am a donater? Can someone who is donater with low post count or non-anything with high post count say if they can or can't build and decon.

Or easier... a mod could just say what has been changed.

+/- is kind of weird, I think one hand, the old number gives you a simpler idea of the persons karma, but this one gives you more info so... I don't really care either way.

AJ, Face's complaint makes sense, what you're saying is just asshattery for the sake of it.  (And not even funny asshattery... if you wanna pick on someone, try to NOT pick one of the more beloved persons on the site.  Karma doesn't mean shit, if you didn't notice my net karma is positive.)

Basically: Back off, fuck off, and stop getting off on your weirdass argumentative ways.  No one wants to watch you forumgasm all over Your Face.
Title: Re: Forum Karma
Post by: Kiwi on January 20, 2010, 02:47:04 am
300+ post it is then.  15 more to go :p

Can the devs explain why they changed this, and explain why they selected the new layout for karma?

My Opinion: I'm fine with either way, but renaming it Karma would be better than turrets with the +/- way, otherwise it can be too confusing for some.
Title: Re: Forum Karma

Kaine, you don't know me very well, or else you'd realize that I don't really listen to adolescent posters. :)
I just think this is a very silly thing to complain about...just like the removal of the hovel was.

Your post is very ironic, in terms of both content and tone (also, beloved? lol).

Anyway, this karma system is more informative than the old one, at the very least. In short, why care? I think the +/- differential is pretty amusing, actually

My bad, good call.

Deleted my earlier post containing my details and ability to alter karma.

If someone gives me 10 cookies, and I eat 3 cookies, I now have 7 cookies. Not +10/-3 cookies. This is why it looks silly.

It's neat to see it, though. I had no idea my karma was so active. I had just figured it went up/down like 50 total. Some people must really hate me, and others must really like me. =D

I agree.

Also, please lower the required post count to raise or lower Karma to either back where it was or change it, because I think 300 posts is a bit too high.

Lastly, regarding the donaters here, I never had known of donaters get to raise/lower Karma regardless of their post count. Was that true? If not, I don't see why something like that could be offered to donaters, doesn't really affect anything and treats them fine.
Title: Re: Forum Karma
Post by: Odin on January 20, 2010, 07:40:31 am
I also think that if you're going to change the mod requirements to prevent abuse of the system then at least reset our karma level to 0. Some of us(like myself) had got negative karma every day, even when we didn't even post. One time I was getting negative karma every second for about an hour.

But wouldn't people just lower your karma anyways, tarnishing your initial impression to others?

How about making an option in your profile to disable people from building/adding and deconning/subtracting karma on your account, reducing it to 0(Nothing)? If people feel that Karma is just unnecessary trivial fluff, they can disable it or in Odin's case, keep people from subtracting his Karma.

Looks at your -202.

1 per second every hour

60*60=360

Tries to figure it out.

Gives up.

Does not compute.

FreaK with 240 posts and a donor can't do karma stuff, so I'd assume being a donor makes no difference at all.

I agree that it's nice to be able to see who's really controversial on this forum, and who doesn't make waves... but most of that could be determined anyway with a degree of common sense.  The fact that you "lower yourself" to arguing with adolescents about things you claim are "trivial" is more of a commentary on you than on any of the adolescents that you harangue.

If you're looking for more silly things to complain about, you have no further to look than here (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=12759.msg187357#msg187357).

Reminds you of possible randomness from human inability to be exact.

Comes up with about 180.

The only reason I can see for the limit is to stop sock-puppets voting.  So 300 is OTT, and just going to encourage even more spamming.

Lol at pic.

300 posts is a bit high, but I think its good.  Currently, it only allows 106 people to build and decon.  This can keep people like odon from having -300 karma due to randomness, and let him have -300 karma due to those 106 people thinking his posts lack importance.

There was an issue some months (to a year?) ago; Two posters had an argument, and one deleted his posts. Timbo, I suppose, decided to remove the deleting functionality. There's not too much use for it, but I think that, if it's going to be disabled for some people, it should be on the basis of individual bans after an offense.

Quit bitching about the karma system. You'll get it eventually.

I'm just glad they removed the total posts from every single post. Now, THAT was something that made people judge each other before looking at the posts. Karma doesn't actually mean anything. Who the hell cares if your turrets are being deconned? I sure as heck don't.

The way the forums go, you're gonna get flamed. You've gotta get used to it. No starting any revolutions, now. Trust me, I tried it, and it didn't work. Just be glad you're not Caffine. :{D

You keep complaining about karma without arguing your point well. All I see is swear words and grief. Most people just ignore karma anyway. The way you complain is what makes me decon you, I'm not sure about everyone else though.

Very well. That is exactly the problem with karma on most websites. People see the way the information is presented, rather than what is actually being said. If someone is able to post a thread saying 'I slept with your mother' in an apologetic, calm and friendly format, they get +'s for apologizing, because thats so nice. If someone posts a thread saying 'I slept with your mother' in a way that shows they regret it, because your mother was so hideous, they never should have slept with someone so fat in the first place, people are agnery, and give -'s. It almost always comes down to the way you present it. And the fact that nobody can see you smiling and presenting your words with vocal expressions, changes in facial expressions and sarcasm, it becomes very very difficult to correctly portray what you're saying.

Most of the time, if I said what I typed out loud, people would laugh, or understand my opinion. Instead, in their head, I am being an angry little kid, complaining about everything.

Karma's a bitch, and I think we should get rid of it.

However, it is a great generator for threads such as these.

Yep, that's what happens, but isn't that what is supposed to happen?  Karma is based on presentation, that's the point.

The way the forums go, you're gonna get flamed. You've gotta get used to it. No starting any revolutions, now. Trust me, I tried it, and it didn't work. Just be glad you're not Caffine. :{D

The reason you can't build or decon turrets is because you spawned with a rifle. Friendly fire is off for everything. At some point, you will be able to go to the :armoury: and buy a ckit. From what I have read in this thread, the ckit seems to cost 300 credits in the forum, as opposed to being free in 1.1 and 1.2 - you earn one credit for each post you make (spam or not), and you lose one credit each time a post of yours is deleted. You do not get any credits for staying alive, staying logged in, killing aliens, or doing anything other than posting. Once you have 300 credits, you can switch out your rifle for a ckit. Then you can build/decon people's turrets.

Right now I still have the rifle.

AFAIK anyone can delete their posts if it's the last post in the thread, and maybe also a time limit.

EDIT:  I can remove this post, and it may depend on what theme you use.  Try with default?

I can delete any of my posts no matter how old they are or how many people posted afterwords. IIRC, that may be a donor privilege.

Looks like I'm wrong, I can delete older posts.
Maybe it's a post-count think?  AFAIK there aren't any donor bonuses, but maybe I'm wrong.

/me goes to start a flame war and then delete his posts.

(The above is why I always quote people when replying to anything where that could happen.  Paranoia ftw!)

Can you maybe only delete your old topics in the clans section? Before I left we were discussing having that forum be self-moderated, which may be the case.

Since it's necro'd anyway: Is it possible for each post to have a +/-, like Youtube? That could detract from most of the drama about who hates who and who cares about karma. Still, a good post would be recognized with lots of +'s. Just seems to me that would be a way to have +/- reflect a post's value, and not who did or didn't kick you in the Nuts...server.

*walks again into the sunset*

Oh, and @Jack, he changed Drazilox's post to fix the typo Celestial Rage highlighted. "made by made" -> "made by me"

The stupidity here doesn't surprise me at all. I'm not a member of KoR, in fact, I think that most of the KoR members are assholes too. But their forums are more interesting. Go ahead, get angry, it makes me laugh. The devs don't do shit and most of the people in Tremulous are losers who can't play any other games because their computer sucks and the Goodwill wouldn't even take them. You can run this piece of shit game on Windows 95 ROFL!!! Yes -1 on turrets already LMAO!!!

Although it's still quite likely.
