Hi,
I think an introduction is needed, I'm new to the forum, I've played tremulous for quite some time, a long time ago (prox a year). I think tremulous has a very nice gameplay, and haven't come across something similar.
I have designer background, so poly-modeling is something new to me. I'm currently using a student version of mudbox, so i don't have to polymodel.
I was thinking what a future version would look like just beside a higher poly count. Everything would get a redesign.
So the Work in progress is an impression of "what could be", and I would like to share what I've been up to so far.
I think I'm halfway through the model of the Tyrant. The basis was a very low polymodel and couldn't get the UV right for painting it. So if you're interessted in the model, be aware it has a messed up uv map. I just hope I can get a decent painting layer on it.
Ok time for some pics

This one is aborted, it look too much like a giant lobster/crab, the thought about it was lots of armor protection.
As I was thinking why would a tyrant need thick armor? It's on top of the food chain. The most logical answer i came up with: other tyrants of other tribes.
So that would be a good reason to rid of the the current tyrant claws, they would brake.

I've got an older version turntable here (http://vimeo.com/12973422)
As you noticed the tyrant has only 4 legs instead of 6, I wanted a 6 limb consistency, so every class will have 6 limbs.
As for the new arms, they're made for thrusting and slashing, Not too sharp not too dull.
Oh and the tail for balance. I had to break up the tail armor or else it would suggest it has a lot of stiffness.
Thing i still have to work on:
- Legs
- eyes
- mouth
- lower belly armor
- lower arms edged (bread knifely edges)
- armor surface detail
- surface painting

I have the feeling it really needs the other legs. It now has the feeling of being far smaller and more vulnerable. :tyrant:
-
It looks neat as it's own class. I wouldn't try to make it into a tyrant, but focus on making it into it's very own alien.
-
Thats awesome. If you want to see it animated export it as object format a let me animate it heres my email f1rst16@yahoo.com. But Its ok if you dont want to give the model to anybody. Looks really good.

it looks like a pokemon XD
-
Untextured it sort of looks like its made of play-do. Perhaps sharpen some edges. I guess it would look different textured..

Agree. It just isn't a Tyrant without the other two legs. But yeah, I always thought the tyrant had out of place claws, those broader blades look more at home. The armor plating is superb too.

I can mail you the model or upload it somewhere if it's too big, when I got the model finished.

So the 6 six legs are one of the key-features that make a tyrant.
then maybe this can be a tyrant stage 1 and then the bigger tyrant as advanced
-
Sorry but it looks like a pokemon =D
-
But going from 6 limbs to 8 isn't consistant, in all the classes, every alien has 6 limbs, so that was my angle.
It's an unwritten rule I like to stick with.

anyway

made some edges, not really sure about it...
and added some leg muscles detail

With soft underside, there is it's weak point.

Tyrant is the only alien in tremulous with six legs and two arms, and it doesn't seem out of place. Good model though.

If i could just copy paste an extra leg :(
I think I'll give zbrush a try, im getting too many rough edges.
I saw in a video is has more flexibility, funny thing is zbrush is cheaper then mudbox, If I'm gonna buy one of them it's probably going to be zbrush.
oh btw, have any of you seen global agenda, they have a nice jetpack and armor looks great too. Inspirational source.

mudbox has better painting. sculptris is free and good, but still new and it's lacking in features. personally, i wouldn't buy either mudbox or zbrush. not saying i'd never have them though.

Hahahha!
I wish I could have Boujo and Maya without worrying,
so it's Blender and Icarus.

I'm just saying IF I had to buy one of them. I just don't have a reason to use a "commercial licence"
Zbrush gives you more bang for buck.
