Apple (Command) + Shift + 4. Then when the little Crosshairs appear, select the area you want to take the screenshot over.

Or, you can use Skitch. Invite only, but I'll give you an invite if you want. It's pretty cool.

Note - Only have two invites

Yeah you can host it on imageshack if you want to.

Equi command-shift-3 captures your entire screen.  Google is your friend.

Here's mine, by the way:

Quicksilver is pulled up there.  I don't believe in shortcuts, menus or the dock, I just use QS.  The bar you see across the bottom is to tell me what desktop I am on (using Virtue).

Click on the apple in the upper left hand corner of the screen and go to "System Preferences."  This is like "Control Panel" for the Mac.  Right smack dab in the top middle is a section for the Dock.  You can change your dock size and position there.  You can also make it only pop up when you move your mouse to the bottom of the screen.  Also, you know...you can drag stuff like applications and documents to the dock and they will stay there for easy launching.  You can also drag stuff you don't use out and it will leave the dock.

Equi, everyone seems to think that having a screensaver as a desktop is cool for some reason that escapes me.  It would just hurt your eyes, distract you, and get annoying.  But beyond that, it will consume a fairly consistent 5-10% of your CPU for no reason whatsoever other than to make shit move around behind your active windows.  Pointless and a waste of resources if you ask me - I know you have a very fast computer but I guarantee Trem will run slower if you do this.

Asking your computer to run a screensaver as a background is kind of like being a manager and asking your employees to do their jobs while they wave their hands around in the air.

That being said, here's how to do it:

First, click here:

http://twothirds.org/Red-Pill-Intel.zip

Unzip the zip file you downloaded and then double-click the .saver file that's in the folder there.  System preferences will open and ask you to install the screensaver.  Install it, and then go to the screensaver preference pane.  Select Red Pill as your screensaver.  If you click the "options" button to the right, you can make some adjustments to make it look better.

NOW, download this:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24497/wallsaver

Double click the .dmg file you downloaded and a disk will mount on your desktop.  Open the disk, and then copy the program inside there to your applications folder.  Open that program (in your apps folder), and it's fairly easy from there (one button click) to set your screensaver as your desktop.

P.S.  Google is your friend.

I know this is horribly counterintuitive (FTFF = fix the fucking Finder) but if you go to the Finder's preferences there's a section under General for "Show these items on the desktop."  The only box I left checked is CDs, DVDs, and iPods.

QS basically makes the Finder pointless.  I only go there when I absolutely have to.  I also hate the dock and hide it up in the corner.  Instead, I have F1-F12 as triggers to open my most common applications.  F4 opens a new Finder window, and since that was the only purpose of my HD icon, I decided I didn't need it anymore.

I could write a whole book about all the tricks I've learned with QS...such a great program and I'm happy to share.  If you want to know how to do some cool stuff you might not have thought about before, you can check out this very comprehensive manual:

mysite.verizon.net/hmelman/Quicksilver.pdf

Once you get into applescript, compound commands and proxy items there's literally nothing QS can't automate.

Equi, you've got to at least try SOMETHING before you go asking.  OS X is usually intuitive...just go with your gut.  OS X comes with a built-in unzipper that handles all the basic filetypes.  If you want something that will uncompress a lot of less common archive types, you can try the Unarchiver:

Oh, I see I see.  Safari will automatically unzip .zip files you download and also automatically mount .dmg files.

Equi if I was you I would actually go and disable this feature right now.  It's one of the few security risks that there are on a Mac - a few exploits take advantage of the fact that Safari will automatically open these types of files upon download.  To protect yourself, just do this:

Open Safari and go to its preferences (Safari menu > Preferences).  Right there in the first pane you will see a box next to "open safe files after downloading."  Uncheck it.

There, now your Mac just got even more impenetrable.

Your college may try to make you install some antivirus software, but if you do some little things like this as well as activate your firewall, there will be no need for that (unlike on a PC where you're toast without some sort of 3rd party protection).

NP mate.  Yes, you have firewall capabilities built in but no I do not think they are on by default.

So, here's how to turn that stuff on.  Go to System Preferences again and click on the "Sharing" pane (under Internet and Network).  In the middle there you'll see a tab for "Firewall."  Head there.  Click the button to start your firewall.

Simple as that, eh?  The firewall will block most everything, except for whatever boxes you have checked on that list there.  If you want to open up a specific port for something (I stream music on port 9000, for example) then you click the "New..." button off to the right to make a hole in your firewall for that port.

For extra security, click the "Advanced..." button and enable all three of those features by checking all the boxes.

Yeah, the different sleep functions are kind of confusing.  Your computer does four different things if you leave it alone for a while:

1.  Dims the display
2.  Turns off the display
3.  Turns on the screensaver
4.  Goes to sleep

You can adjust how much time before 2 and 4 happen in the "Energy Saver" preference pane.  For number 3, you need the screensaver preference pane.  If you don't want your display to turn off like that, then just go to the Energy Saver pane and crank the time until the display shuts off to "Never."

You should probably just poke through every pane in the system preferences...all the useful settings are there.

Equi, I suggest you do some sort of independent research/learning. A lot of the stuff that you're asking (I'm not trying to sound harsh) is pretty simple stuff. You might be interested in TUAW's Mac 101  (http://www.tuaw.com/category/mac-101/)series of blog posts. It's all really simple stuff, but stuff that you should know how to do on a Mac.

In addition, Apple has an official support page called Mac 101 (http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/) also. It has a more guided-tour feel to it, as opposed to short how-to's.

If you're pretty new to the Mac, you may also want to see Switch 101 (http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/), which compares doing stuff on Windows with stuff on the Mac.

@Equi: I hate screensavers, multitudinous desktop icons, and anything else the computer has to use memory for or that clutters up the desktop just for the sake of aesthetics. If I walk away, I close the lid, unless I'm playing Trem. Saves your HD from sudden shocks (in case it gets jostled), doesn't leave the ugly black screen of abandonment, puts the 'puter gently night-night, and is just generally better than screensavers. Screensavers are for desktop machines and AOL/Windows weenies, IMHO.

I just realized that I hadn't uploaded my own picture yet, hehe.

Edit: a couple details on my desktop. I have the desktop background set to cycle every 15 minutes. That way, I never get tired of a single background so quickly. If I happen to find a nice background online, I just toss it in my "Backgrounds" folder and it'll show up in a couple of days.

That application "BonEcho" is actually just a third-party optimized build of Firefox.

In the Dock: Finder, Quicksilver, Adium, Skype, Vienna, iCal, Mail, MSN Messenger (side note: every single MSN client for the Mac sucks, but not nearly as much as MSN for Windows sucks), iTunes, Firefox (BonEcho). And then a little Smart Folder that shows me all the files I edited or created that day, and the Trash.

P.S.: For you Mac users, check out QuickShareIt (http://quickshareit.com). It's the best file uploader I've found yet. If you know about Quicksilver's "Finder Selection" object, it's really cool what you can do.

Out of curiosity - any particular reason you turned down Safari and Camino to go with Firefox?  Even with the Mac-optimized build it's definitely slower than Camino...and it's ugly as hell to boot.  You should give Camino a run if you haven't already.

Personally I can't leave Safari with SafariStand, even though it's a HUGE RAM hog.

I don't actually see my desktop all that often.  Running KDE on a gig of ram was killing me, so I switched to fluxbox.  Now I only need 2gig of ram pretty badly instead of horribly badly :P

Best change I've ever made.  Now all I need is fluxbox on beryl so that I need ram horribly again.

Windows:

If you hate Windows so much, and think Mac OS X is a better produt, why do you use Windows XP?

Because Mac can't do some of the things that Windows can do, just like Windows can't do some of the things that OS X can do.

Anyway, at least I'm not using Vista.

Ps: I think you got my relentless hatred for Vista confused with relentless hatred for Windows in general. If I hated Windows so much, why boot it?

Kept meaning to drop one of these in this thread, and finally getting around to it.  Mostly because I took the shot today so there's something worth posting.  The background is the KDE default, 'cause I never have a blank desktop that doesn't have stuff on it - if I'm looking at a desktop, I'm working on it :>

Maybe if laziness doesn't overtake me when I get home, I'll do the same for the home machine.  But it looks pretty much the same, just half as wide physically...

Well, that desktop does not work anymore. Now KDE3 works again... But, I am kind of an estimated halfway through the dependency hell that KDE4.1 brought up... .. .

I don't think that really matters, this thread should be allowed to be revived as new players and current players are constantly changing their desktops. I didn't have my FreeBSD fvwm2 desktop 2 weeks ago.

Post by: Bissig on July 27, 2008, 12:10:25 am
Ok, so after two weeks I finally managed to almost fix my dependency hell. Now I have a somewhat recent KDE4.1 RC1 "Release6" - whatever the "Release6" means. Dumb thing, after upgrading to Kernel 2.6.26 I am missing the linux-kernel-headers so I can't get the nvidia driver to compile. It will probably take some time until someone tosses it into the repos. Well...

It works much better now, except for the fact that some kconf_update process runs amok everytime I start KDE. It uses up memory completely and makes it nearly impossible to kill it via console. But, hopefully that is another issue fixed soon. Also, the desktop icons now sit in their own plasmoid called "folder view".

Here it is:

What shit?

Edit:

Ahh, maybe your thinking of the "controls" for the widgets? The icons are now widgets too, and to lay off of the "controls" just right click the desktop and click on "Lock Widgets".

Necromania:

opensuse 11.x Factory with KDE 4.2 RC1

That big menu in the middle is "Lancelot". A widget sort of like "Rocketbar" or similar software starters on windows. I will probably remove because I do not really use it.

KDE 4 is now in a working state.

- Working Meta-desktop (remove activies now available yeeha *g*)
- Very shiny looking oxygen theme
- The worldclock is back (Good for overseas admins like me ;O)
- Widgets work now and they added google widgets support
- pulseaudio is still fucked
- low performance problem with old(-er) drivers is now gone
- Auto-Resizing TASKBAR WORKING. That's the coolest feature I have been waiting for

In most Romance languages, the word for "byte" is unrelated to the word for "bit" or "binary eight"; it's derived from "octet" given that there are eight bits in a byte. Therefore, in French and Spanish, a "gigaoctet" is the normal term for a gigabyte (or more politically correct, a gibibyte, in SI units) and is abbreviated accordingly.

Title: Re: lets see your desktop
Post by: Einstein on April 15, 2009, 07:21:04 am
Because contrary to popular belief, American English is not the first, only, or de facto standard language in the universe.

Just dicking with ya. Of course for most scientific terms, English or German tend to be the preferred languages that most other idioms inherit from (with some exceptions during the 19th and 20th centuries when France set the bar for many fields of study), and indeed even the actual word "byte" is the same in Spanish and English, as is "bit." I have no idea about the Spanish etymology behind either, to be honest, and I cannot speak to the other language families. Even German and Dutch nowadays seem to be following the English conventions, using variations on their Grecian/Latin counterparts.
