Title: Orion I - Update
Post by: xenom[GER] on October 06, 2007, 11:02:29 am
Hi all,

due to lack of time for finishing it I've released my map "Orion I" under a creative commons license!

Map information
The map takes place on a human communication spaceship.

Here is a map overview (you can view it in-game in the lobby / main hallway):

Screenshots

Humans start in "Control Room" / "Control Center", aliens in "Ventilation".

Hint
There also is an easter egg in this map.
Why don't you have a drink at the lobby while waiting to join a team? ;-)

If you find a bug, please inform me so it can get fixed until the final release!

(I didn't update the screenshots yet, because there are only texture changes).

Greetings,

Welcome to the forums!

It's off to a good start, lacks trim and polish in many areas - a simple border around the various grilles and grates can go a long way, the same is true for the pipework. Overall I like it - keep up the good work!

After a quick look i can safely say this is quite a nice first-timer!

I looked at it for a couple minutes and its one of the best alphas I've ever seen. I can't wait to test its game play.

The only big problem I see is, that the aliens have like 4 or 5 entrances to their base, which will make it hard to defend, but I'll wait to see how well it works.

Ok, I'll add trims to those grills. Maybe for some pipes, too :-)

Ventilation has two entrances ("Pipes" and "Ventilation Access"). The red room below "Ventilation" is a seperate hallway (you just can't see that on the minimap, because this hallway is too close to "Ventilation").

Thanks @ all for your positive feedback! :-)

Looks very nice, but human base looks very strong.

Oh, before I forget, make your map independent of other maps, so copy&paste the textures and shaders to their own folder and shader.

May it be enough to distribute the file orion_textures.pk3?
'Cause normally every client has the standard maps/textures on the computer. I just want to keep the file size of my pk3 as small as possible :-)

By the way:
Here is a radiant shot of the pipe trims like Taiyo suggested:
http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/shots/misc/pipetrims.jpg
The grills will also have a metal border in alpha2 :-)

I got bored and my photoshop skills need practice, so I started on a real floor plan for the map, instead of the noclipped screenshot he is using. If you don't like it when I'm done, you don't have to use it, but I hope I make it good enough for a serious result.

Cool map. The giant Granger is awesome. 'Fear teh Giant Grangur'? (Purposly misspelt?)
The text on the screens is too far out and the text isnt quite fitting/realistic(if you know what i mean).
Lobby isnt much of one needs proper desk/computers/chairs etc

Thanks again for your replies!
It's really good to know that the community likes my map. :-)

One reason I created this minimap in-game was the advantage to have the map lighting in it. So you can see "Ah, I'm in a red room!"
But maybe I could use it elsewhere (website, ...).
I'm looking forward to your result! :-)

"Fear teh giant grangur" means "Fear the giant granger". Maybe I'll change this text in the next beta / final :-)

Yeah, I know what you mean. I wanted those texts to look more like a hologram, so I moved it out of the screens.

The problem is:
I want to avoid too much detail that is able to seriously block the players (this was one of my design concepts for this map).
But maybe I could add some things that don't block the player too much.

Another thing that is a bit more important for me than those details:
Did you find any gameplay issues?

When you played the map online, was the map balance ok?

[edit]
Here is another set of screenshots:
(http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/shots/dev/thumb_lobby1.jpg) (http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/shots/dev/lobby1.jpg)(http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/shots/dev/thumb_lobby2.jpg) (http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/shots/dev/lobby2.jpg)(http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/shots/dev/thumb_generators.jpg) (http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/shots/dev/generators.jpg)

Changes:
Lobby:
 - added the bank
 - added monitors to the lobby desk
Generators:
 - added detail below the floor

I also updated the download link!

*digging the thread out of its grave*

Is any admin running Orion I on their server?

Any remaining issues with the gameplay, or is the gameplay balanced now?
Did enyone find some new bugs to fix?

If the gameplay is fine, I'll switch the map status to "final". :)

Thanks!

I don't know if you already figured this out yourself, but it is imperative that you make your map completely independent of other maps. You cannot safely assume everybody will have the stock PK3's installed.

That's why I added all textures / shaders into the current .pk3 :-)

Is there any stuff missing?

Hi everone,

a long time has passed, but I finally did another update to Orion I.

Changes
 - Re-created the complete "Sewer" sector, so it looks like a real sewer now
 - Re-created "Satellite"
 - Re-created "Data Core"
 - Added a floor window in "Control Center"
 - Added a new sky texture (thanks to VegaStrike and their license ;-) )
 - Widened "Freight Lift" a bit

The only gameplay change was in "Freight Lift".

Screenshots
(http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/pre-final2/satellite_thumb.jpg) (http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/pre-final2/satellite.jpg)(http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/pre-final2/data_core_thumb.jpg) (http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/pre-final2/data_core.jpg)(http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/pre-final2/freight_lift_thumb.jpg) (http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/pre-final2/freight_lift.jpg)
(http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/pre-final2/control_center_thumb.jpg) (http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/pre-final2/control_center.jpg)(http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/pre-final2/sewer1_thumb.jpg) (http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/pre-final2/sewer1.jpg)(http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/pre-final2/sewer2_thumb.jpg) (http://misc.tobiasgall.de/orion/pre-final2/sewer2.jpg)

ToDo-List
 - Update the minimap image
 - Add a female voice saying some alert messages (does anyone know a good source for that?)
 - Maybe add a trigger so something happens depending on the team that wins the match

Main corridor
Currently, "Main Corridor" is one long, straight hallway. Shall I add an edge here so you can't see what happens on the other side of that corridor?

Your opinion
What do you think about the new changes? Do you like them?

Greetings,
    xenom

It is great to see more and more astounding maps being created. I hope it will be easy to port them to Trem 1.2

"Port" ? It's not like we're changing engines.

The concepts are there, but we may need to redo some base locations and layouts due to structure changes.

What Orion still needs are reports about gameplay tests. Before it goes final I want to test it on the newest SVN codebase (eg. mgdev server), so the map workks for Trem 1.2.

Thanks, especially for the part that you liked the gameplay of the previous versions :)
I have to test the current version on a public server first, but most changes were only detail stuff (except the re-design of Data Core)

Wee, page 2 \o/

Another thing I wanted to add are some vocal alerts spoken by a woman ("warning, alien contact in sector...") in some locations to give the map a better atmosphere.
My current problems are:
 - I found some open source text-2-spech engines, but sadly their english spelling aren't that good
 - free-to-use engines don't allow to redistribute the content
 - My own voice is male :D

Does anyone know a way how I can accomplish that?
I looked several times now, but I can't get a good result :-/

Thanks in advance!
