Title: FunTimez(beta) - my second map, and soon to be second best
Post by: Chief_Officer on January 28, 2008, 12:43:59 am
Okay, this map was made to be bizarre... I wanted to practice strange concepts, and it grew into this. You probably haven't seen anything like it. http://forum.d-epic.org/download/file.php?id=26 (http://forum.d-epic.org/download/file.php?id=26) Please tell me what you think of my weirdness.

Lets see, how can I put this mildly?

I played this for about 2 minutes. This definitely isn't a map people would expect for Tremulous.
For one thing, it has texture depedencies on other non-stock maps (when will they ever end?). Several areas have no textures.

This map is one giant, poorly lit cube with lots of little floating platforms inside. There's a big brightly colored red column in the middle that's burning my eyes and parts of the map aren't lit properly.

Although I have seen a LOT worse, I have seen a hell of a lot better. This is not a map people are going to play, sorry. It's not even that 'fun'. How is it fun for humans to have to jump to get from base to base? How is it fun for Tyrants who fall?
I'm sorry, but I would highly recommend you focus your skills on building a real map designed for Tremulous.

Yeah, this map won't work as a funmap, let alone a serious gameplay map. I encourage you to continue mapping, but releases like this don't really contribute anything to trem.

A few suggestions :
- Try to avoid obvious repeating textures.
- Avoid making your map dependent on other maps, especially custom maps.
- The red column in the middle looks awful.
- Please make serious gameplay an objective when you make a map. The last thing trem needs is more joke maps, hardly anyone plays them and they're usually only fun for a couple minutes, if even that.

I look forward to seeing your next effort, hopefully you will improve :)

what's wrong with that? as long as they're packed....

Err... Texture dependency means that the map uses textures from other non-stock maps thus requiring players to find and download them as well.

Third party maps should have at least all non-stock textures included in the pk3, and preferably all textures used to avoid breakage from the stock texture set changing in the future. The pk3s can get a little bloated depending on how many textures are used, but obese maps are more acceptable than broken ones.
