So...What's your favorite type of METAL
You can vote for three different options, and if your tastes change, you can change them.
Now, before you ask, nu-metal, metalcore etc. IS NOT FUCKING METAL. So it's not included on this list. Apologies if I have left out a genre; just make do with what I have given you.
EDIT: HOLY SHIT! Just realized I forgot NWOBHM!
-
Thrash, Death, and Doom.
-
Classy. Mine, of course was Death (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=wPAbbm65liw), Thrash (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=cFa9AYKCOfw) and Folk (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=d3u86DPd7qc).
Tech Death, to be precise. Nile \m/

1st: Please don't curse.
Any who, the younger generation today likes songs from MR. 1337 H1GH PITCH R3P3T1T1VE R0B0T VOICE (aka Kenya East, Acorn, Fifty cents, etc..) I personally would choose metal any day over those types of songs (as long as it is not just incoherent screaming) though I don't like either. My point is I don't think a whole lot of people are going to post here.
On topic: If I were to choose a favourite type of metal though, it would definitely be metaclorian no matter what you say but since you don't consider it to be these would be my top three:
Speed
Weed
Crack
I got my three options.

The amount of improvement in your spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and common sense really does imply into the whole "trolled" comment. It seems unlikely that you would intentionally use a broken english type because you were afraid your regular english was horrible when it is indeed above-par. Not to mention you actually have solid logic points and common sense abilities now. Whereas before you sounded like an 11 year old on speed.
On Topic:
My favorite type of metal has to be whatever type Demons and Wizards fall into.

Whereas before you sounded like an 11 year old on speed.
That's going in my signature! :)
On-topic: In no particular order, my favorites are neo-classical, doom, and progressive.
-

That is defiantly going in my signature. That is just about the most random thing you could say at this point, I litterally fell out of my chair laughing at this.
-
My favorite type of metal? Doom, and I don't mean just Doom, I meant the game Doom. Have you not heard the awesomeness of the beginning music? 'da da da da da DA! do do do do do DO!". You can't tell me that wasn't the ultimate 8-bit era of Metal back then.

Demons & Wizards is a power metal band
I am about positive now that you are indeed a troll sir, I'm wondering if the previous accusation in fingered's goodbye thread is not to far off afterall.
-
My bad :-[ I have never heard of them. It's still going to stay in my signature though ;). I'll have to read better to understand the context clues next time.
To me it looked like it was just demons and wizards and not an actually band.

agreed, but I don't remember doom being 8 bit, or maybe I'm thinking about the pixels wrong.

Hi.
My favourites metal genres?
Steal, chrome, gold and aluminium.
-
I like platinum.
-
Am i seriously the only person who voted stoner? :o
-
Stoner? I've never heard of that kind of metal, maybe I should look it up. Is it any good? ;D
-
Pot metal, slow and sludgy, like the passage of time while your cookies bake.
The desert sound: see Mastodon, Kyuss, QotSA, MoR, et al.
-
metalcore seems to be missing from the poll.

Also, I hope that wasn't sarcasm, or I look like an idiot. ;)

No, I'll be honest, I didn't read the first post thoroughly. I don't listen to much metal, but I do like some metalcore artists such as Killswitch Engage and Atreyu. But since they don't count, I'll just stay out of this thread as it doesn't have much to do with me.

Just want to point somthing out to you. Atreyu is screemo, which is like emo, but, and yes, I know it's scary, worse.
Also, I'd put Killswitch Engage down as nu-metal, but oh well. I guess some of their later stuff may be more metalcore-ie.
-
I'm just going by what wikipedia says. xD
Anyway, how would you categorize afreudianslip?
-
Never heard of them.
Ever.
-

I didn't really expect you to. But a quick search could lead you to them I'm sure. It doesn't really matter though.

I voted Heavy, Glam and Thrash, 'cuz, hey, I'm old. 1983 was the shit, dude. :)
@Kaleo: I checked out Nile. Very technical, very death-metallish. Does dude ever sing, or just do that Scando gloom-and-doom growl all the time? Lyrically, looks quite interesting. Musically, a little to the nihilistic side of my personal proclivities.
Cheers!

If you like tech death you can't miss Origin, or Braindrill.

death metal vocals: operatic foppishness or microphone-eating neanderthalisms

Good metal.
-
Saxon good or Savatage good? :P
Like who, f'rinstance?
Me: Ancient proto-metal: everything from Cream & Hendrix to Savoy Brown and Brownsville Station; and Legacy Metal: Priest, Maiden, Sabbath, Megadethtallicanthraxslayer, UFO, Scorps, etc.
-
Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, good bands. Saxon is fantastic. Throw in a bit of Stratovarius and Apocalyptica. Rammstein has it's place in my heart, too (albeit a rather small place). I have a neo-classical and symphonic metal fettish, too. That derived itself from my love of classical and hard rock. Give me anything with a good drum beat, an electric guitar, and a violin(or cello or other string instrument normally found in a symphony or orchestra [*field not required]), and I'll probably like it.
-
That Vivaldi. He was the baroque metal master.
-
1. Doom (Agalloch, My Dying Bride, Rapture, Empyrium, Reverend Bizarre, Cult of Luna)
2. Progressive (Opeth, maudlin of the Well, Gorjia, Porcupine Tree, Cynic)
3. Death (Death, Amon Amarth, At the Gates, Bloodbath, Insomnium)
HM. Black (Summoning, Arcturus, Bathory)
-
Genre(favorite band[favorite song])
Power (Sonata Arctica[My Land], Running Wild[Under Jolly Roger])
Neo-Classical (Rhapsody of Fire[Emerald Sword], Symphony X[The Odyssey])
Progressive (Thunderstone[Face in the Mirror], Symphony X)
Someboy forgot Pirate Metal. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Running_Wild_(band))
I would have liked to pick:
Heavy (Iron Maiden[Run to the Hills], Dream Evil[Children of the Night])
Doom (Hammerfall[Hearts on Fire])
-
Running Wild[Under Jolly Roger])
I have been trying to remember to look up the name of this band for about a month. Thank you. I haven't heard this song in like twenty years, and was trying to describe it to a friend of mine who claims to be a metalhead (but said he'd never heard of that song). Goes along with the Helloween I'm listening to this week (KoTSK, Pt. I). In the name of Pirate Metal, I humbly submit: Riot - "Swords and Tequila (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7QvICcWIEE)". You may also enjoy UFO's "Rock Bottom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qP_OqOJ8ug)" if you like the crusty old proto-metal (the solo on the live album kicks the crap outta the one in this clip, but what the heck, it's Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, how vintage is that?).
\m/
P.S. If you wanted to be UFO in 1975, you had to take your shirt off.:P
P.P.S. This is my new favorite thread. I learn about six new metal bands every day. :)
-
Another one of my favorite songs by Running Wild(I am still discovering them) is Genesis, on Black Hand Inn. It's one of those songs I like to call "epic songs" because they tell an epic story. Songs like The Odyssey and Divine Wings of Tragedy(by Symphony X), which are 24 and 20 minutes long respectively, and Symphony of Enchanted Lands(by Rhapsody of Fire), which is 13 minutes long. Genesis is 15 minutes long and tells a story about the Planet X, the Annunaki, and Armageddon.

lol old people with their boring music, here, have a good song
Agalloch - Falling Snow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4ih3JVrRPE)
-
Dude,
Next time you tell someone that their music is boring, and then have the balls to post a nine-and-a-half minute song, at least link to a video with moving images or a band that doesn't sound like an old Fleetwood Mac jam with their roadie singing. :P
So all death metal bands have to have either an elf or an orc as a vocalist, huh? What is it, union rules? \m/
-
I meant boring as in athousandbandssoundlikethistiredshit, and linked you to unique band currently making music, which i also find to be beautiful. Also, it takes a while to get into growls for vocals, but when you do you want nothing else.
xoxo, Dude
-
@yahoo: Thank you. I liked the second reply better. I still haven't had a chance to check out all the bands you posted yesterday. I listened to Celtic Frost back in the day, but I haven't been really into death metal for about a decade or two. Actually that song you linked to sounded like Pelican with a singer, but after that "boring" comment, I had to bust your hump just a little. I didn't even take offense at the "old" part; that much, at least, is true. :P ;)
@Odin: I am currently listening to the myspace page of Symphony X. Thanks. I'm currently in a prog-classical-thrash sort of mood, and this works perfectly. \m/ 8)
-
Make sure you listen to The Odyssey. Every Symphony X listener needs to hear that song.
-
streaming it now
thx

Grab yourself a copy of Nile's "In Their Darkened Shrines". Unas, Slayer Of The Gods will be well worth a listen if technical epicness is what you crave.
Take a look at Sarcophagus (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=gy-HtLCQw_k) while your at it.
-
rivetheads, road dogs and metal merchants:
still checking out every band, song and album posted on this page
@Yahoo: enjoying the prog-metal (haven't made it to the other two sub-genre yet); the PT track I'm listening to right now sounds like Simon & Garfunkel (really liked Opeth, Agalloch, motW, Porcupine Tree and most of the others, so far; turns out Agalloch is in my town; imma go look for the record) 8)
@Kaleo: heavy stuff, awesome guitar work; I can see you like the tech death stuff :P
@Odin: listened to "The Odyssey" yesterday - great over-the-top symphonic metal :)
Mahalo, and thank you for your kokua.
-
I really like power metal, some of the bands I like are Rhapsody of Fire, Stratovarius, Heavenly etc...
But recently I've started to listen to the band 'Summoning', they're mostly Atmospheric Black Metal but some may argue that it's also Tolkien Metal.
Here's a good song from them, although they had to cut it since it was too long.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txjqkUiA4Iw
-
More Nile, of course:
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=qixvpoFF3Ps
Altaria also kicks amazing amounts of arse:
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=tlwgo_tLOl0
I've also been teaching myself how to play Holy Wars by Megadeth:
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=-YczYC2yHTM
And if you think that's me, go stick your head in a toilet bowl and come back when you've gained some common sense.
-
Summoning is awesome, Stronghold is their masterpiece.
-
You people have definitely affected my recent musical experiences:
Today's Sub-Sub-Genre: Dark Ambient Metal (Atmospheric and/or Symphonic Black Metal)
Summoning - "Long Lost to Where No Pathway Goes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBfkDH3F1GA)"
Wolves in the Throne Room - "I Will Lay Down My Bones (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=07XF5uKZlgw)"
Velvet Cocoon - "Avalon Polo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVCtXINRuNU)"
Spectral Lore - "Through an Infinite Dreamscape (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5bjYhwJTiI&feature=related)"
Coldworld - "Winterreise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ph3QVIaCzLI&feature=related)"
Xasthur - "Walker of Dissonant Worlds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcEc8LX1FMg&feature=related)"
Since we've been pretty much snowbound here since Saturday, we got our forty-year storm for the Solstice, and the skies are gray and gloomy, it suits the mood perfectly.
@Kaleo: What a difference between Nile and Altaria. One is definitely heavier than what I listen to, while the other is somewhat lighter. As far as Megadeth goes, Dave Mustaine fucking rocks, just like he has for the past 25 years.
P.S. The latest entries in the fanfic thread were somewhat influenced by all of the music you fuckers, wikipedia, myspace and youtube have recently exposed me to.

I just reminded myself of Venom.
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=fHmzFVDjVnM
And here's a Dimmu Borgir version of that song:
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=U1D5ALjpI60
Also, if symphonic black metal is your thing, then you cannot miss Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=joEAb_y7ZYA).
-
Checked out the Dimmu Borgir and the Nile (and Nile-dudes other dark ambient solo project).
Love Megadeth (always have, always will).
I just listened to that Venom song (that tune barely qualifies for the genre it helped to create). :P
Right now I'm listening to The Answer, which is not exactly metal, but right next door, in the blues-base hard rock genre (they even do a cover of "Sweet Emotion": it sounds like Coverdale). :P
Did you dudes check out Red Fang - "Prehistoric Dog (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3Vcoq-QRo4)" yet? It's got beer and melee combat!
"Sorry, this chain mail doesn't cover all of me. I have emotions still."

Why are you listening to Death Metal then?
I'm quite sure I will be able to find a few people in THIS topic who like Death. Seeing as it's tied for 1st in the poll atm.
Here Comes The Kraken have been rocking my jocks lately, check them out. Thanks for the necrobump, I think... Iabz0.o, Please, for the love of all that is metal, DEAR GOD PLEASE! Do not get troll this thread like you did to mine and get it locked. I was simply asking if anyone knew any bands similar to Bring Me The Horizon, Here Comes The Kraken or Lamb of God. Some actual help and less pathetic attempts to insult's would be nice.
@ Player1, medageth are innovaters, I listen to some pretty heavy stuff, but I still like some Megadeth. Hanger 18 FTW!
@ IabzO.o, Please, feel free to spam me with pathetic homo insults: Coming from the guy with a penis in his mouth.pay for male prostitute all you want, because of my sexuality, I just tend to ignore homosexual like you. You like men so much, that's why you bought a foot long dildo. I just keep on talking to women, because I like them. I, unlike most of the Tremulous Community, don't give a shit about 'gay' sex. I don't fuck men because I am not a faggot. You just keep on suckin' balls, maybe if you suck hard enough, you'll get a surprise.
Insulting me with a sad, sad troll is fine, but I clearly remember reading 'most of the tremulous community'. I'll leave it up to my fellow metallers to decide for themselves.

Hey Frazzler.
PROTIP: Maybe if you don't tell people to flame you, you won't get flamed, and maybe you will enjoy the forums more. Or, you could pick fights with people, tell them to "bring it on," and then act all butthurt and confused when people are mean to you. :(

Death/Power/Viking (which isn't really a subgenre, but I just like Ensiferum that much :P) here. I'm listening to "Iesous" by Bloodbath right now (guest appearance from Chris Alvestam ftw).
Bolt Thrower + Tremulous = epic winsauce.
Anywho, what about symphonic metal (not symphonic black metal) bands like Kamelot or Epica? Those are awesome too, but they're not in the poll. :(
-
Thrash, speed, death FTW.
-
Lol, people who listen to a lot of metal always make a lot of drama concerning what is metal and what is not. I don't get it.
Are you unable to accept that shitty music exists in all genres, no matter what? : >
Anyways, genres are bullshit, very inacurate, without any rules.
Just what every dude thinks for himself really.
Voted for doom, sludge and prog.

STONER & DOOM
Anything that's over-produced or over-engineered isn't metal, that's pop.

*sigh* here we go again...
With you on this one.
Underoath, The Devil Wears Prada, Haste The Day, Whitechapel, August Burns Red, As I Lay Dying, Parkway Drive and I Killed The Prom Queen.
Christian metal is awesome. What they lack in lyrics, they make up for in brutality. Sure, it might not be everyones cup of tea, but I like the fact that they're able to do what they love, play metal, and not really give a shit about what people think of them (christian metal is despised by most). A lot of people discard it, without really paying much attention to it. Christian metal is the same as any other metal, just with different lyrics.
And incase anyone was wondering, they still basically stick to the metal genre. It's not all: "God is great, I want to marry him". In fact, it's more along the lines of: "Life's shit, people are shit, I need Gods help". Don't diss it until you've actually listened to the music.
PS: I don't like to put labels on metal. Technically, everything comes under the genre of 'heavy metal'. Black Sabbath is heavy metal, Cannibal Corpse is heavy metal. All of it is heavy metal. Except Polka Metal, that shit makes it's own fucking genre.
-
I went with Progressive/Doom/Power.
As far as power goes, only Iced Earth/Demons $ Wizards. For the other two, Opeth and Katatonia.
